How the count-up calculation works
This elapsed time calculator does true calendar arithmetic, not the naive “divide by 30.44” shortcut many counters use. Years, months and days are computed by borrowing across seconds, minutes, hours and days with the real length of each month — so leap years and 28-, 30- and 31-day months are all handled exactly. For example, from 29 February 2020 to 29 February 2024 the result is precisely 4 years, 0 months, 0 days.
The breakdown is always measured in your device’s local timezone, and the live timer re-computes “now minus start” every second, so the count is exact even if you close the tab and come back later. Your last start date is remembered in this browser only — nothing is sent to any server.
Popular uses for a count-up timer
Days-sober / sobriety counter: enter your clean date and watch the streak grow to the second. Anniversary counter: see exactly how long you have been together, with the next anniversary date and the days remaining. Habit streaks: quit-smoking dates, workout streaks, no-sugar challenges. Project & business age: days since launch, company founding or website go-live. Fun facts: total seconds you have been alive, days since the Moon landing (20 July 1969) or Y2K.
Frequently asked questions
How does the time since date calculator work?
Pick any past date and time, then press Start counting. The live count-up timer ticks every second and shows exactly how much time has passed in years, months, days, hours, minutes and seconds, plus totals in each unit (for example total days, total hours and total seconds). Everything runs in your browser — no sign-up and nothing is uploaded.
How are years, months and days calculated — is it calendar-accurate?
Yes. The breakdown uses real calendar arithmetic, not fixed 30-day months or 365-day years: it borrows across seconds, minutes, hours, days and months using the actual length of each month, including leap years. For example, from 2020-02-29 12:00 to 2024-02-29 12:00 the result is exactly 4 years, 0 months, 0 days, and from 2023-01-01 00:00 to 2026-10-09 00:00 it is 3 years, 9 months, 8 days. Both results are verified by an independent test oracle.
What is the difference between time since and time until?
Time since counts UP from a past date to now (elapsed time), while time until counts DOWN from now to a future date (remaining time). This page is the count-up direction. For the countdown direction, use our Time Until Date calculator, which is the mirror image of this tool.
What happens if I enter a future date?
You get a clear error instead of a negative count: this tool only counts up from the past. If the date you entered has not happened yet, double-check the year, or switch to the Time Until Date countdown, which is built for future dates.
Can I use this as a days-sober counter, anniversary counter or habit streak tracker?
Yes — that is what the count-up timer is best at. Enter your sobriety date, wedding or relationship start date, quit-smoking date or the day you started a habit, and the timer shows your streak live to the second. Your last date is remembered in this browser (local storage), so the counter resumes automatically when you come back, and you can copy a shareable link with the date embedded.
Which timezone does the elapsed time calculator use?
Your device's local timezone. The start moment you pick and the current moment are both read in local time, so the breakdown matches the clock on your wall, including daylight-saving transitions in your region. If you need the count anchored to a different timezone, convert the start time to your local time first.
Does the counter keep running when I close the tab?
The page does not need to stay open. Because the calculation is always 'now minus your start date', reopening the page — or the shareable link — instantly shows the correct up-to-date count. Your most recent start date is also saved in this browser so you do not have to re-enter it.
Is my date sent to a server?
No. This is a 100% client-side tool: the date you enter never leaves your device, there are no network requests, no cookies for tracking and no account. The saved date lives only in your own browser's local storage.
