How it works
The countdown recomputes the exact difference between right now and your target on every tick, so it never drifts — even if the tab sleeps. Calendar months follow the date-fns convention (whole months from the start date, month-end clamped), and all math runs on UTC timestamps, so daylight-saving changes can't shift the result. Example: from October 9, 2026 to Christmas Day (a Friday) is 2 months, 16 days (77 days total).

Frequently asked questions
How does the time until date calculator work?
Pick a target date and optional time, and the calculator shows a live countdown that ticks every second. It computes the exact difference between right now and your target, then breaks it into calendar years, months, days, hours, minutes and seconds, plus totals in days, hours, minutes and seconds. Everything runs in your browser — no sign-up and no data sent to any server.
Is it accurate across leap years and daylight saving time?
Yes. The math is done on UTC timestamps, so daylight saving shifts can never change the result — March 7 to March 9 is always exactly 48 hours even across the US spring-forward. Leap years are handled too: February 29, 2024 to March 1, 2024 is counted as exactly 1 day, and a leap-year span like 2024–2025 totals 366 days.
What happens if I enter a date that already passed?
You get a clear notice that the date is in the past, and the tool automatically switches to elapsed mode — showing exactly how much time has passed since that date, in the same years/months/days/hours/minutes/seconds breakdown.
Can I share my countdown with someone else?
Yes. Press "Copy share link" and the tool encodes your target date and event title into the page URL. Anyone who opens the link sees the exact same live countdown ticking on their own device.
Which presets are included?
One-click presets cover New Year, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Halloween, US Thanksgiving (computed as the 4th Thursday of November), and Easter (computed with the Gregorian computus), each rolling to the next upcoming occurrence. There are also quick offsets: +7 days, +30 days, +100 days and +1 year from right now.
How is this different from a date difference calculator?
A date difference calculator compares two fixed calendar dates and gives a static answer. This is a live countdown anchored to the current moment — it ticks every second and is built for tracking time remaining until birthdays, launches, deadlines and holidays. For static date-to-date math, see our date difference calculator.
Does the tool store my dates or event titles?
No. All calculations happen locally in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded, stored or tracked — closing the tab erases everything unless you saved the share link yourself.
