YouTube Thumbnail Downloader — Grab & Download HD Thumbnails

Paste any YouTube link and instantly view, compare, and download the video's thumbnails in all five resolutions — up to 1280×720 HD. Works with watch URLs, Shorts, live streams, embeds, and youtu.be short links. Free, no signup, no watermark, and 100% client-side.

Honest by design: YouTube thumbnails live at a public URL pattern — img.youtube.com/vi/{VIDEO_ID}/{size}.jpg — so this page needs no API key and sends nothing to our server. Your browser loads each preview straight from YouTube's image CDN, which is also how the tool honestly detects which sizes actually exist for a video.

Try:

Which thumbnail sizes exist?

YouTube generates up to five thumbnail images per video. Larger is not always available — the table is honest about that, and the tool above checks each size live for the video you paste.

NameFileDimensionsAvailability
Max Resolution (HD)maxresdefault.jpg1280 × 720Only for HD uploads (720p+) or custom HD thumbnails — often missing
Standard Definitionsddefault.jpg640 × 480Usually present; missing on some older uploads
High Qualityhqdefault.jpg480 × 360Almost always present
Medium Qualitymqdefault.jpg320 × 180Almost always present
Defaultdefault.jpg120 × 90Always present for public videos

A note on honesty: there is no 4K or 1080p video thumbnail on YouTube — 1280×720 is the largest image the platform ever serves. Any site promising higher is upscaling.

Which links can I paste?

The extractor understands all of these formats and pulls the 11-character video ID out of each one:

FormatExample
Standard watch URLyoutube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID
Watch URL with extrasyoutube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID&t=42s&list=…
Short linkyoutu.be/VIDEO_ID
Shortsyoutube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID
Liveyoutube.com/live/VIDEO_ID
Embedyoutube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID
Privacy-enhanced embedyoutube-nocookie.com/embed/VIDEO_ID
Legacy playeryoutube.com/v/VIDEO_ID
Mobile / Musicm.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID, music.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID
Bare video IDVIDEO_ID (11 characters, letters/digits/-/_)

How it works

  1. Paste a link. Any format from the table above, or just the 11-character video ID from the address bar.
  2. We build the five image URLs. Thumbnails follow the public pattern https://img.youtube.com/vi/{ID}/{size}.jpg — no API key, no server round-trip, no login.
  3. Your browser checks each size live. Previews load directly from YouTube's CDN; sizes that return a 404 get an honest "not available" badge so you download the largest one that truly exists.

Frequently asked questions

How do I download a YouTube thumbnail with this tool?

Paste any YouTube link — a watch URL, youtu.be short link, Shorts, live, or embed URL — or just the 11-character video ID, then press "Get thumbnails". The tool extracts the video ID and shows all five thumbnail sizes with live previews. Click "Download" under any size to save it, "Copy URL" to grab the direct image link, or "Open" to view it full-size in a new tab.

What is the highest-quality thumbnail I can get?

The maximum is maxresdefault at 1280×720 pixels (HD). Below it are sddefault (640×480), hqdefault (480×360), mqdefault (320×180), and default (120×90). We are explicit about this because some sites imply "4K thumbnails" exist — they do not. 1280×720 is the largest image YouTube ever serves for a video thumbnail, and even that one is not guaranteed, which is why each size on this page gets a live availability badge.

Why does the max-resolution thumbnail sometimes fail to load?

YouTube only generates the 1280×720 maxresdefault image for videos uploaded in HD (720p or higher) or with a custom HD thumbnail. Older or low-resolution uploads simply do not have one, and YouTube answers those requests with a 404 (occasionally a tiny gray placeholder). This is normal and not a bug in the tool — the status badge under each preview tells you honestly which sizes actually exist for that video, so you always download the largest one available.

Is it legal to download YouTube thumbnails?

Thumbnails are copyrighted works that belong to the video uploader, so the legal answer depends on what you do with them. Downloading for personal reference, competitor research, design mockups, or study is generally unproblematic; re-uploading someone else's thumbnail as your own, or using it commercially without permission, can infringe copyright. When in doubt, ask the creator — and this is general information, not legal advice.

Does this tool use the YouTube API or require a login?

No, and that is the point. YouTube thumbnails follow a public URL pattern (img.youtube.com/vi/{id}/{size}.jpg), so no API key, quota, account, or login is needed — the same trick documented in YouTube's own developer guides. Because there is no API involved, there is nothing to rate-limit you and no account that can be revoked.

Does it work with Shorts, live streams, and short youtu.be links?

Yes. The video-ID extractor understands more than ten link formats: standard watch URLs (even with extra parameters like timestamps and playlists), youtu.be short links with or without a scheme, /shorts/, /live/, /embed/, legacy /v/ URLs, youtube-nocookie embeds, mobile (m.youtube.com) and music.youtube.com links — plus a bare 11-character video ID pasted on its own.

Do you host the thumbnails on your server?

No — we state this plainly so there is no confusion. The preview images are loaded by your browser directly from YouTube's image CDN; no image data passes through our server, and the links you paste are never sent to us, stored, or logged. The page runs 100% client-side: if you disconnect from our site after the page loads, the tool keeps working as long as YouTube's CDN is reachable.

Can I grab thumbnails from private or deleted videos?

No. The URL pattern is predictable, but YouTube only serves the actual image for public (and unlisted, if you know the ID) videos. Private, deleted, or age-restricted videos return an error or placeholder image instead of the thumbnail. There is no workaround for this from the client side — any tool claiming otherwise is misleading you.
