JPG to PNG Converter — Free, No Upload, 100% In-Browser

Convert JPG/JPEG files to PNG right on your device. Drag & drop many files at once, set resize options, see before/after previews with an honest size comparison, then download them one by one or all at once.

Full privacy: your files never leave your browser
Honesty first: PNG is a lossless format while JPG is lossy. For photos, PNG results are typically 1.5–3.5× LARGER than the original JPG — that is normal and not a bug. This tool shows the actual size of every result so you can decide for yourself.

1. Add your JPG files

Background & metadata

Honestly: JPG has no alpha channel, so JPG images are always opaque — this color choice does not change the result. This option exists for consistency with the other image converters in this series.

Metadata: EXIF/IPTC (GPS location, camera info) are always stripped when the image is redrawn via the browser canvas. This is built-in browser behavior — there is no option to keep it.

PNG quality: PNG is always lossless; there is no quality slider because there is nothing to trade off (unlike JPG).

3. Conversion results

Results will appear here after you add files.

How it works

  1. The JPG file is read with the File API — no upload.
  2. The image is drawn to a <canvas> at the target dimensions (original or resized).
  3. The canvas is exported via toBlob(image/png) into a PNG file.
  4. You download the result through a regular download link.

Honest technical note: the quality parameter of toBlob is ignored for PNG (it only applies to JPEG/WebP). Browser PNG compression uses the default level and cannot be adjusted — tools claiming to offer a PNG quality slider are misleading.

Scope boundary — this tool vs other tools

This tool only converts JPG/JPEG → PNG. Nothing else:

  • Not gif-to-png (#488): for GIF files (including animation and transparency), use the gif-to-png series tool.
  • Not png-to-pdf (#491): to combine images into a PDF document, use the png-to-pdf series tool.
  • Not a general converter: does not handle WebP, BMP, TIFF, or SVG.

FAQ

Is converting JPG to PNG free here?
Yes. This converter is 100 percent free, with no file-count limits, no watermark, and no account signup. Everything runs in your browser, so there are no server costs passed on to anyone.
Does image quality drop when converting JPG to PNG?
No. PNG is a lossless format, so pixel quality does not drop during conversion. But understand that conversion cannot restore detail already lost when the original file was compressed to JPG. The best possible result equals the quality of the source JPG.
Why is the resulting PNG larger than the original JPG?
Yes, and that is normal. JPG uses lossy compression that discards data to keep files small, while PNG uses lossless compression that stores every pixel intact. For photos, PNG results are typically 1.5 to 3.5 times larger than the source JPG. This tool shows the actual size comparison of every file so you can decide for yourself.
Can JPG be converted to PNG with a transparent background?
No. Transparency needs an alpha channel, and the JPG format has no alpha channel at all. The background color option in this tool exists for visual consistency, but honestly it does not change the result because JPG images are always opaque. If you need a transparent background, you must remove the background manually in an image editor.
Can I convert many JPG files at once?
Yes. You can drag and drop many JPG files at once, or select multiple files via the file-picker button. Each file is processed one by one in the browser, complete with a preview and a before/after size comparison.
Are my files uploaded to a server during conversion?
No. Your files are never uploaded anywhere. The entire process, from reading the file to producing the PNG, happens 100 percent on your device using the File API and the browser canvas. Closing the tab leaves no copy of your files on any server, because no server is involved at all.
Is EXIF metadata carried over into the PNG file?
No. When the image is redrawn through the browser canvas, EXIF and IPTC metadata such as GPS location, camera model, and photo settings are always stripped automatically. This is built-in browser behavior, not a choice, so there is no option to keep the metadata.
What resize options are available?
There are three modes. Percent: scale relative to the original size, e.g. 50 percent. Exact dimensions: set a target width and height, with an aspect-ratio lock option so the image does not get squished, or turn the lock off for free stretching. Max width: cap the maximum width; smaller images are not upscaled.
What is the maximum file size that can be converted?
There is no artificial limit from this tool, but your browser and device memory are the practical limits. Very high-resolution JPG images, e.g. above 50 megapixels, can exhaust tab memory. For normal use like camera photos and web images, there will be no problem.
JPG to PNG or JPG to WebP — which is better?
It depends on your needs. WebP produces much smaller files for the modern web, but PNG wins on universal compatibility and for further editing because it is supported by every application without exception. If your priority is the smallest file size for a website, WebP is better. If your priority is compatibility and lossless quality, PNG is the choice.
Can this tool be used on a phone?
Yes. This tool’s layout is responsive and its buttons are touch-sized for comfort on 390-pixel screens. Conversion uses standard browser APIs available in modern Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge, including on Android and iOS.
How is this tool different from gif-to-png?
This tool is specifically for JPEG files, i.e. with .jpg or .jpeg extensions. For GIF files, including animated GIFs, use our sibling tool gif-to-png, which is designed to handle GIF frames and transparency. Keeping them separate lets each tool stay focused and honest about its limits.
I need PNG to PDF — can this tool do that?
This tool only converts JPG to PNG. If you need to combine several PNG images into one PDF document, that is a different tool’s job: png-to-pdf. Each tool in this series does one job well, not everything halfway.
How do I download all results at once?
Yes. After all files finish converting, press the Download all button. The browser will download each PNG file one by one in sequence with a short pause so it is not blocked. File names follow the original names with a .png extension, and name collisions are automatically numbered.
