Slow Cooker Conversion Calculator
Convert any oven or stovetop recipe to slow cooker time — get the LOW and HIGH settings instantly, convert a slow cooker recipe back to the oven, or swap between LOW and HIGH. Built on published conversion charts, with food-type presets and food-safety notes.
The chart is calibrated for typical 325–350°F oven recipes. The oven temperature you pick is context only — the conversion keys off the recipe time.

Food-type presets and safe temperatures
Dense or bone-in foods need the long end of the range; poultry and seafood need less. Safe internal temperatures follow USDA guidance — a thermometer is the only doneness test that counts.
| Food | Safe internal temp |
|---|---|
| Poultry (whole, pieces, ground) | 165°F (74°C) |
| Ground beef, pork, lamb | 160°F (71°C) |
| Beef, pork, veal, lamb roasts, steaks, chops | 145°F (63°C) + 3-minute rest |
| Fish and shellfish | 145°F (63°C) |
Why oven-to-slow-cooker math is not linear
An oven blasts food with 350°F dry heat from minute one. A slow cooker spends its first hours merely climbing to a simmer, then parks the food at a gentle 190–200°F plateau where connective tissue slowly turns to gelatin. That is why 15 minutes of oven time already demands hours in the cooker, while multiplying the oven time by eight (15 minutes → 2 hours) only roughly doubles the LOW time (4–6 h → 8–12 h). The lid also traps every drop of moisture, which is why liquid gets cut and why flavors meld instead of reducing.
Worked examples
Beef stew: 90-minute oven braise
A beef stew recipe that braises 90 minutes in the oven converts to 7–10 hours on LOW or 3.5–5 hours on HIGH. Use the long end of the range for tough cuts, and check that the meat is fork-tender.
Chicken casserole: 1 hour at 350°F
A chicken casserole baked 1 hour at 350°F converts to 6–8 hours on LOW or 3–4 hours on HIGH as a general dish. With the chicken-pieces preset it becomes 5–7.5 hours on LOW or 2.5–4 hours on HIGH, and the chicken must reach 165°F (74°C).
Reverse: 8-hour LOW pot roast back to the oven
A pot roast written for 8 hours on LOW converts to about 95–145 minutes in a covered pot at 325°F (163°C) — handy when the slow cooker is busy.
Liquid, fill level, and timing rules
- Liquid: reduce by about one third to one half versus the oven version — almost nothing evaporates under the lid.
- Fill level: keep the cooker one half to three quarters full for even heating.
- Dairy, fresh herbs, quick vegetables, rice, pasta, seafood: add in the last 30–60 minutes.
- Do not lift the lid: each peek can add 15–30 minutes as heat escapes.
- Thaw first: never start from frozen — food lingers too long in the 40–140°F danger zone.
- Browning: sear meat before it goes in; the cooker cannot brown.
Slow cooker conversion FAQs
How do I convert oven time to slow cooker time?
Take the oven or stovetop cooking time from your recipe and look it up on a slow cooker conversion chart. As a rule of thumb, 30 minutes in the oven becomes 5–7 hours on LOW or 2–3 hours on HIGH, 1 hour becomes 6–8 hours on LOW or 3–4 hours on HIGH, and 2 hours becomes 8–12 hours on LOW or 4–6 hours on HIGH. This calculator does the lookup for any oven time, including times between the chart rows.
How long is 1 hour in the oven in a slow cooker?
One hour of oven or stovetop cooking converts to about 6–8 hours on the LOW setting or 3–4 hours on the HIGH setting. This is one of the most-looked-up rows on every published slow cooker time conversion chart, and it matches the calculator result exactly.
What is 2 hours in the oven converted to slow cooker time?
Two hours of oven cooking converts to 8–12 hours on LOW or 4–6 hours on HIGH. Long braises like this are exactly what slow cookers are built for: set it in the morning on LOW and it is ready for dinner.
How do I convert a slow cooker recipe back to the oven?
Use the reverse tab: enter the slow cooker time and setting. For example, 8 hours on LOW converts to about 95–145 minutes in a covered pot at 325°F (163°C). The rule behind it is simple: at 325°F, divide LOW hours by 4 and HIGH hours by 2 to get the oven time.
How many hours on LOW equals HIGH in a slow cooker?
The official guidance gives fixed pairs: 12 hours on LOW equals 8 on HIGH, 10 equals 6, 8 equals 4, and 7 equals 3. The calculator's LOW↔HIGH tab uses those exact pairs, so entering 8 hours on LOW returns 4 hours on HIGH. Outside those anchor points the general rule is that LOW takes about twice as long as HIGH.
What oven temperature is LOW on a slow cooker, and what is HIGH?
A slow cooker on LOW simmers at roughly 190–200°F (88–93°C), and on HIGH it runs roughly 280–300°F (138–149°C). As an oven equivalent, LOW behaves like a 200°F oven and HIGH like a 300°F oven. Exact numbers vary by brand and model.
Do I need to use less liquid when converting a recipe to a slow cooker?
Yes. A slow cooker barely evaporates anything because the lid stays on, so reduce the liquid in your recipe by about one third to one half, and fill the cooker one half to three quarters full. Too little liquid risks scorching; too much gives you soup.
Does chicken need less time in the slow cooker than beef?
Yes. Poultry cooks faster than red meat, so this calculator applies a 0.9 adjustment for chicken pieces. A 1-hour oven casserole becomes 5–7.5 hours on LOW or 2.5–4 hours on HIGH with the chicken preset, versus 6–8 hours / 3–4 hours for a general dish. Always verify poultry reaches 165°F (74°C).
Can every oven recipe be converted to a slow cooker?
No. Dishes that depend on dry heat do not convert well: anything that needs a crispy crust, browned skin, or puffed pastry. Moist-heat dishes convert best: stews, braises, pulled meats, soups, and casseroles with sauce. Dairy, fresh herbs, and seafood go in during the last 30 to 60 minutes so they do not break or overcook.
Is it food-safe to convert recipes to long slow cooking times?
Yes if you follow two rules. First, thaw meat fully before it goes in; starting from frozen keeps food in the bacterial danger zone (40–140°F) too long. Second, keep total time in that zone under 2 hours. Verify doneness with a thermometer: 165°F for poultry, 160°F for ground meat, 145°F plus a 3-minute rest for roasts and steaks, 145°F for fish.
Why is oven to slow cooker conversion not a straight ratio?
Because a slow cooker spends its first hours just climbing to a simmer, then holds food at a gentle 190–200°F plateau where collagen breaks down slowly. Doubling the oven time does not double the slow cooker time: 15 minutes of oven time already needs 5–7 hours on LOW, while 8 times more oven time (2 hours) only needs 8–12 hours. The published charts — and this calculator — reflect that curve.
What if my oven time is under 15 minutes or over 4 hours?
Under 15 minutes the calculator clamps to the 15-minute chart row (5–7 hours on LOW) and flags it, because quick bakes convert poorly — a 10-minute bake is usually better on HIGH for a short time than on LOW all day. Over 4 hours it extrapolates past the published chart and flags the result as an estimate, so treat it as a starting point and check early.
