Worked examples
Example 1 — 12″ for $10 vs 16″ for $16
A 12″ pizza has an area of 113.10 sq in, so $10 ÷ 113.10 = $0.0884/sq in. A 16″ pizza has 201.06 sq in, so $16 ÷ 201.06 = $0.0796/sq in. The 16″ wins — it is 10.0% cheaper per square inch.
Example 2 — 10″ $8 vs 14″ $12 vs 18″ $18
Per-square-inch prices: 10″ = $0.1019, 14″ = $0.0780, 18″ = $0.0707. Ranking: 18″ > 14″ > 10″. The 18″ is 30.6% cheaper per square inch than the 10″.
Example 3 — same price $14: 12″ vs 18″
12″: 113.10 sq in at $0.1238/sq in. 18″: 254.47 sq in at $0.0550/sq in. For the same $14, the 18″ gives 2.25× the area and is 55.6% cheaper per square inch.
Example 4 — the per-slice trap
12″ for $10 cut in 8 = $1.25/slice. 16″ for $16 cut in 10 = $1.60/slice. Per slice, the 12″ looks cheaper — but slices are different sizes. Per square inch of actual pizza, the 16″ is 10.0% cheaper. Always compare per square inch, not per slice.
