Cake Serving Calculator

This cake serving calculator answers how many servings in a cake for any standard pan, using the Wilton cake serving guide as its data source. It works both ways: pick a pan to get servings, batter and frosting — or enter your guest count and get the right pan. It also plans tiered cakes, estimates batter and frosting for custom pans, and shows every result in US cups and metric millilitres.

UK bakers: this doubles as a cake portion calculator uk — switch to metric for centimetres and millilitres, and see cake portion sizes uk notes below.

What Size Cake Per Person Count?

Enter how much cake per person event you are planning — the solver picks the smallest standard pan that covers your guests, or a tiered combo when one cake is not enough.

Tiered Cake Serving Guide

Stack 2 or more tiers for a wedding cake servings chart total. Wondering how many tiers for 100 guests? Try 8, 10 and 12 inch rounds: 118 wedding servings.

Cake Batter Calculator and Frosting Estimator

A cake batter calculator for any pan size: enter your pan dimensions and get batter cups, estimated servings, and how much frosting for a cake of that size by surface area. Wondering how much batter for a 9 inch cake? The standard-pan mode above uses exact Wilton numbers; this mode fits the same chart with geometry for off-chart pans.

The buttercream amount for cake scales with surface area: about 0.017 cups per square inch of finished cake, fitted to 13 Wilton chart rows. Figure roughly 3 cups per standard buttercream batch. And if you are asking how many cake mixes for 12 inch cake pans: a 12 inch round 2-layer cake needs 15 cups of batter, so buy 3 mixes.

Cake Serving Chart (Wilton, 2-Layer Cakes)

This cake serving chart lists cake servings per pan for wedding (1 x 2 in), party (1.5 x 2 in) and dessert (2 x 3 in) slices, plus batter per layer and frosting for the finished 2-layer cake. It is the cake serving size chart behind every mode above — square cake servings chart rows included.

Wondering how many servings in an 8 inch cake? The table says 24 wedding, 16 party, 8 dessert. 10 inch cake servings: 38 wedding round, 50 wedding square. 6 inch cake servings: 12 wedding round. 12 inch cake servings: 56 wedding round, 72 wedding square. Party and dessert columns are scaled from the Wilton wedding numbers by slice area; see the method note.

Serving Styles: Party, Wedding, Dessert

Wedding cake slice size is 1 x 2 in per the Wilton guide — the industry standard for tiered cakes. Party cake serving size is a bigger 1.5 x 2 in slice, the norm for birthdays. Dessert serving size cake portions are generous 2 x 3 in slices served with a meal. Because a party slice is 1.5 times the area of a wedding slice, party counts run at two-thirds of wedding counts.

Method Note and Sources

Servings, batter cups and icing cups for standard round and square pans are the exact Wilton Wedding Cake Guide numbers (2-layer servings, batter per 1 layer, icing for 2 layers). Party and dessert servings are derived by exact slice-area ratio from the Wilton wedding anchor — documented, not Wilton-published. Custom-pan batter uses the empirical fill ratio 0.485 of pan volume fitted to 13 Wilton rows; custom-pan frosting uses 0.01683 cups per square inch of finished cake surface, fitted the same way. Fill pans one-half to two-thirds full per Wilton. Servings are a guide; actual yield varies with cutting.

Costing note: this tool plans servings, batter and frosting — it does not price cakes. For ingredient and per-slice costing, see our recipe cost calculator linked below.

Cake Servings FAQ

How many servings are in an 8-inch round cake?

An 8-inch round 2-layer cake serves 24 at wedding portions (1 x 2 in slices), 16 at party portions (1.5 x 2 in), or 8 as large dessert slices (2 x 3 in). It needs 6 cups of batter (3 cups per layer) and about 4 cups of frosting.

How many servings does a 10-inch square cake make?

A 10-inch square 2-layer cake serves 50 at wedding portions, 33 at party portions, or 17 as dessert portions. Plan 12 cups of batter (6 cups per layer) and about 6 cups of frosting.

How much batter do I need for a 9-inch round cake?

One 9-inch round layer needs 5 1/3 cups of batter per the Wilton chart, so a 2-layer 9-inch cake needs 10 2/3 cups total. Since one cake mix yields 4 to 5.5 cups of batter, that is about 2 mixes.

How much frosting do I need for a 12-inch cake?

A 12-inch round 2-layer cake needs about 6 cups of frosting (roughly 1,419.5 ml) for filling, a smooth coat, and simple top and bottom borders. Add more if you plan heavy piping or rosettes.

How many servings in a 3-tier wedding cake (6, 8, 10 inch)?

A 3-tier round wedding cake with 6, 8 and 10 inch tiers (2 layers each) serves 74 wedding portions: 12 plus 24 plus 38. Total batter is 22 cups (2 plus 3 plus 6 cups per layer, times 2 layers) and about 12 cups of frosting (3 plus 4 plus 5).

What size cake do I need for 50 guests?

For 50 guests at wedding portions, the smallest exact fit is a 10-inch square 2-layer cake with 50 servings. A 12-inch round cake with 56 servings gives a small buffer for seconds or uneven cutting.

What is the difference between party and wedding serving sizes?

A party slice is 1.5 x 2 in (3 square inches) and a wedding slice is 1 x 2 in (2 square inches), so the same cake serves about one-third fewer people at party portions than at wedding portions. A dessert slice of 2 x 3 in serves about one-third of the wedding count.

Does a 3-inch deep pan serve the same as two 2-inch layers?

Yes. An 8-inch round baked in one 3-inch deep pan serves the same 24 wedding portions as two 2-inch layers, because Wilton cuts cakes 3 to 6 inches tall the same way. Batter differs: 5 cups in one deep pan versus 3 cups per 2-inch layer (6 cups total).

How many servings in a 20 cm round cake?

A 20 cm round cake is about 8 inches, so use the 8-inch numbers: 24 wedding servings, 16 party servings, 6 cups of batter for 2 layers, and about 4 cups of frosting.

How many cake mixes do I need for a 12-inch 2-layer cake?

A 12-inch round 2-layer cake needs 15 cups of batter (7.5 cups per layer). With one mix yielding 4 to 5.5 cups of batter, buy 3 mixes to be safe.
