How big should a foyer be? Size your entryway from the front door swing, check the traffic path with furniture in place, pick a rug that fits, plan lighting hang height, coat storage, and bench depth — with dimension rules grounded in published design guidance.
Converged from published design guidance (architecture, code, and home-design sources). Values marked planning are practical planning assumptions, not published rules.
| Element | Rule |
|---|---|
| Minimum foyer width | 42 in, or door width + 6 in (whichever is larger); 36 in code minimum hallway |
| Door swing arc | Keep a radius equal to the door width free of rugs and furniture |
| Clear route into the home | 36 in minimum |
| Traffic path status | Pass at 36 in+, tight at 30–36 in, fail below 30 in |
| Two-way passing | 48 in (planning) |
| Console table depth | 10–12 in narrow foyers, up to 14 in where space allows, 16 in max |
| Entryway rug sizes | 3×5 / 4×6 small, 5×8 medium, 6×9 large, 8×10 grand; 12–24 in exposed floor border |
| Fixture bottom above floor | 84 in walkthrough; 78 in over furniture; 108 in two-story (second-floor eye level) |
| Flush-mount recommendation | When 14 in or less of fixture height fits |
| Coat hooks per person | At least 2, spaced 8 in apart (planning) |
| Hook heights | 60 in adults; 36–42 in children |
| Coat closet depth | 24 in standard; 28–30 in for bulky coats |
| Bench depth | 16–18 in |
| Bench height | 17–19 in |
| Bench length per person | 21 in (planning middle of 18–24 in) |
| Bench end clearance | 12 in at each run end (planning) |
Enter your front door width and whether it swings inward. The tool takes the larger of 42 inches (the architects' comfort minimum for a foyer) and your door width plus 6 inches of clearance. A standard 36-inch inward-swinging door therefore needs a 42-inch-wide foyer at minimum, with the door's full swing arc — a radius equal to the door width — kept clear of rugs and furniture.
Building code requires hallways to be at least 36 inches wide, and most architects recommend 42 to 48 inches for a comfortable foyer. This calculator uses 42 inches as the minimum foyer width, or your door width plus 6 inches, whichever is larger, so the entry feels open rather than corridor-tight.
Small foyers suit a 3x5 or 4x6 ft rug, medium foyers a 5x8, large foyers a 6x9, and grand foyers an 8x10. Leave 12 to 24 inches of exposed floor around the rug, and keep the rug outside the front door's swing arc so the door clears the rug and pad.
In a walkthrough foyer, keep the bottom of the fixture at least 7 feet (84 inches) above the floor. Over furniture that nobody walks under, 6.5 to 7 feet works. In a two-story foyer, hang the fixture near second-floor eye level, about 8 to 10 feet up.
16 to 18 inches deep and 17 to 19 inches high is the comfortable range for an entry bench. Allow about 21 inches of bench length per person, plus 12 inches of clearance at the ends of the bench run.
Keep the door's swing arc, a radius equal to the door's width, free of rugs and furniture. A standard 36-inch door also needs a 36-inch clear route into the home, which is why 42 inches is the minimum foyer width this tool recommends.
Plan at least 2 hooks per person, spaced about 8 inches apart. Mount adult hooks at 60 inches high and children's hooks at 36 to 42 inches. If you prefer a closet, allow 24 inches of depth, or 28 to 30 inches for bulky winter coats.
In a narrow entry, keep console depth to 10 to 14 inches so you preserve at least a 36-inch clear walking path. Depths up to 16 inches only work where the foyer is wide enough to keep full circulation.
A foyer is the formal front entry: first impression, guest-facing, minimal storage. A mudroom is a utilitarian secondary entry for wet boots and sports gear. This calculator sizes the formal foyer; for a hardworking back entry, see our Mudroom Size Calculator.
Yes. Where nobody walks directly under the fixture, you can drop it to about 6.5 to 7 feet above the floor for a more intimate look over the table. The lighting planner's furniture-below option uses 78 inches for exactly this case.
