Every recommendation above comes from published rug-sizing rules, not guesswork. The core formulas:
target rug = room − 2 × border, with a 12–18 in border (8–12 in in small rooms). Then buy the nearest standard size at or below the target.rug = table + 48 in (24 in each side) so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out; 30–36 in per side for bulky chairs.| Situation | Math | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| 14×16 ft living room, 18 in border, all legs on | Target 11×13 ft | 9×12 (front-legs-only: 8×10) |
| 40×92 in dining table, 24 in clearance | 88×140 in = 7'4"×11'8" | 9×12 |
| 60 in round dining table | 60+48 = 108 in | 9 ft round |
| Queen bed (60×80 in), bottom two-thirds | 18 in past each side | 8×10 |
| King bed (76×80 in), bottom two-thirds | Target 112 in wide | 9×12 |
| 3×10 ft hallway | 24 in wide × 8 ft long | 2×8 runner |
| Pad for an 8×10 rug | Minus 2 in each dimension | 7'10"×9'10" |
What size rug for dining room? Add 24 in per side (the 24 inch rule for a rug under a dining table): a 36x60 in six-seat table gives 84x108 in, so buy 7x10; a 48x72 in table gives 8x10. (Rug size for dining table = table + 48 in.) What size rug under dining table corners? The same rule applies on all four sides. What size rug for bedroom? The two most asked: what size rug for queen bed (8x10, bottom two-thirds) and what size rug for king bed (9x12). What size rug for 10x12 bedroom with a queen? Still 8x10. What size rug for 12x16 living room? With an 18 in border the target is 9x13 ft, so buy 9x12. -- the bed drives the size, not the room. How big should a rug be under a bed? Aim for 18-24 in of rug showing past each side and the foot. What size runner for hallway? Hallway runner size is simple: 6 in narrower than the hall on each side and 12-18 in shorter -- a 3 ft hall takes a 2x8. How much floor should show around a rug? 12-18 in of bare floor at the walls (8-12 in in small rooms). Should all furniture legs be on rug? Either all legs or just the front legs on the rug both work -- the front legs on the rug look is the classic rule. What size round rug for round dining table? Add 48 in to the diameter: a 60 in table needs a 9 ft round. 8x10 vs 9x12 rug? The 9x12 is 35% larger (108 vs 80 sq ft). Rug coverage percentage: aim for 40-65% of the room -- check yours in the Coverage tab. How to measure for an area rug: start from the formulas above, then snap to the standard rug sizes list below. Use the tabs above for living room rug size, dining room rug size, bedroom rug size, or hallway runner size. Sectional sofa rug size follows the whole seating footprint, not just the sofa. This page doubles as a printable rug size chart and a complete rug size guide.
Rectangular: 2×3, 3×5, 4×6, 5×7, 5×8, 6×9, 7×10, 8×10, 9×12, 10×14, 12×15, 12×18 ft. Runners: 2×6 through 3×15. Round: 3–10 ft diameters. Square: 6×6, 8×8. Standard sizes cost less than custom because they are produced at scale.
Measure your room and leave 12 to 18 inches of bare floor at the walls. For a 14x16 ft living room that gives an 11x13 ft target; the nearest standard size at or below it is 9x12 for an all-legs-on layout, or 8x10 for front-legs-only. In small rooms an 8 to 12 inch border is fine.
At least 24 inches on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out; 30 to 36 inches is more comfortable with bulky chairs. Example: a 40x92 in table needs (40+48) x (92+48) = 88x140 in, which is 7 ft 4 in x 11 ft 8 in, so the nearest standard rug is 9x12.
An 8x10 rug, placed under the bottom two-thirds of the bed. A queen is 60x80 in, so 18 in on each side gives a 96 in (8 ft) target width. The rug should extend 18 to 24 in beyond each side and past the foot, so your feet land on rug instead of cold floor.
A 9x12 rug under the bottom two-thirds of the bed. A king is 76x80 in; with 18 in on each side the target is 112 in wide, and 9x12 (108 in wide) is the nearest standard size, leaving about 16 in of rug showing on each side.
Leave 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug edge and the walls in a standard room; 8 to 12 inches works in small rooms. The formula is: target rug width = room width minus 2x the border. Example: a 12x16 ft room with an 18 in border gives a 9x13 ft target, so buy a 9x12.
Three layouts all work. All-legs-on: every leg sits on the rug with at least 6 in of rug behind the back legs - the most anchored look. Front-legs-only: front legs sit 3 to 6 in onto the rug while back legs stay on the floor - the most popular choice. Floating: the rug sits under the coffee table only, a deliberate style for small rooms.
Choose a runner about 6 inches narrower than the hallway on each side and 12 to 18 inches shorter, so it clears door swings. A 3 ft wide, 10 ft long hallway needs a 24 in wide runner that is 8 ft long - a 2x8 runner.
Cut the pad 1 inch short on every side (2 in smaller overall) so it never peeks out from under the rug. For an 8x10 rug the pad is 94x118 in, which is 7 ft 10 in x 9 ft 10 in and covers about 77.0 sq ft.
Aim for 40 to 65% of the room's floor area - the range interior designers target. Below 30% the rug reads as a disconnected floating island; above 70% it starts to feel like wall-to-wall carpet. Example: an 8x10 rug (80 sq ft) in a 12x14 room (168 sq ft) covers 47.6%, right in the sweet spot.
Rectangular: 2x3, 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, 5x8, 6x9, 7x10, 8x10, 9x12, 10x14, 12x15 and 12x18 ft. Runners: 2x6 up to 3x15. Round: 3 to 10 ft diameters. Square: 6x6 and 8x8. This calculator snaps every recommendation to one of these buyable sizes.
Size up. The number one rug regret is buying too small. An 8x10 is 80 sq ft while a 9x12 is 108 sq ft - 28 sq ft (35%) more coverage for what is usually a modest price step, and the larger rug anchors the furniture far better.
Add 48 in (24 in per side) to the table diameter and round up to a standard round size: 24 in table -> 6 ft round, 36 in -> 7 ft, 48 in -> 8 ft, 60 in -> 9 ft, 72 in -> 10 ft. Example: a 60 in table needs 108 in of rug, so buy a 9 ft round.
A 9x12 rug is 108 sq ft versus 80 sq ft for an 8x10 - that is 28 sq ft more, or 35% larger. The jump also matters visually: the extra foot on each side is what lets all four chair legs stay on the rug.
Yes. Past about 70% floor coverage a rug stops reading as an area rug and starts feeling like fitted carpet, which can make the room feel smaller. Keep 12 to 18 in of bare floor visible at the walls; use the Coverage tab above to check your numbers.
