What size chandelier for your room? Size the diameter from the room rule, match it to your dining table, solve the hang height and chain drop, plan two-story foyers and kitchen islands, and check brightness — 7 modes in one free tool.
The room rule taught across lighting guides: add the room's length and width in feet, read the total as inches — that is your baseline chandelier diameter. Low ceilings (under 8.5 ft) take 10% off; high ceilings (over 10 ft) add 10–20%.
Over a dining table, size to the table, not the room: the chandelier diameter should be 1/2 to 2/3 of the table width. Tables 108″ and longer read better with two fixtures.
| Table width | Chandelier diameter (1/2–2/3) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 36″ | 18–24″ | |
| 42″ | 21–28″ | |
| 48″ | 24–32″ | |
| 54″ | 27–36″ | |
| 60″ | 30–40″ | |
| 66″ | 33–44″ | |
| 72″ | 36–48″ | |
| 78″ | 39–52″ | |
| 84″ | 42–56″ | |
| 90″ | 45–60″ | |
| 96″ | 48–64″ | |
| 102″ | 51–68″ | |
| 108″ | 54–72″ | consider two fixtures |
Over a dining table: hang the fixture bottom 30–36″ above the tabletop on an 8 ft ceiling, plus 3″ for every extra foot of ceiling. In open areas keep the bottom at least 7 ft off the floor.
Two-story foyers take an oversized fixture — a published reference table anchors a 10×12 ft foyer at 34–40″ — with the bottom of the chandelier sitting level with the second floor.
The fixture (or combined pendant span) should cover 1/2 to 2/3 of the island length, hang 30–36″ above the countertop, and space multiple pendants about 30″ apart.
A planning estimate (single-source rule of thumb): the chandelier should deliver 15–30 lumens per square foot of room — 15 for ambient rooms, up to 30 where tasks happen.
Already own the fixture? Enter where its bottom sits and audit the placement: the 30–36″ hang band over a table, seated sightlines across the table, the 7 ft walkway rule, and whether the fixture body actually fits the drop.
A chandelier is a decorative hanging light fixture sized by diameter, drop, and hang height. These sibling tools cover the neighbors — each is a deliberately different intent:
Table lamps sit, chandeliers hang — portable lamp sizing for nightstands, end tables, consoles, and desks: shade proportions, eye-level glare check, and pair matching. No ceiling-drop math here.
A ceiling fan circulates air — blade span, downrod, and CFM. It produces no light design of its own. Different physics, different tool.
Can-light layout planning for lights flush in the ceiling — spacing grids and fixture counts, not hanging fixtures.
Wall decor sizing — mirrors hang on walls and follow furniture-width rules, not ceiling-drop math.
Window treatments — panel width, length, and stack rules for windows, unrelated to overhead lighting.
