Common dining table sizes
| Seats | Rectangular | Round |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 48″ × 36″ | 36–44″ diameter |
| 4–6 | 60″ × 36″ | 44–54″ diameter |
| 6–8 | 78″ × 36″ | 54″+ diameter (up to 72″) |
| 8+ | 96″+ × 36–44″ (24″/person rule) | 60–72″ diameter (24″/person rule) |
Published guides list a 60″ round table for 8 people — that is 23.6″ of edge per person, tighter than the 24″ comfort rule this calculator uses for its minimums. The calculator shows both the honest minimum and the recommended standard size so you can decide.
The sizing rules
- 24″ per person of table edge — the comfort standard across furniture sizing guides (20″ is sometimes used for formal settings).
- 36–44″ wide for rectangular tables — 36″ is the common width, 44″ gives generous shared-dish space; below 30″ is cramped.
- 36″ clearance from table edge to wall or furniture for walking behind chairs; 24″ minimum if chairs only pull out with no walkway. Rule of thumb: subtract 6 ft from your room dimensions for the max table.
- Round tables: circumference must hold seats × 24″, so minimum diameter = seats × 24 / π — then round up to a standard size (36/42/48/54/60/72″).
- Extendable tables: size the closed length for everyday seats and the extended length for guest seats; the difference is the leaf extension (common leaves are 12″ each).

Dining table size FAQs
How many inches of dining table do I need per person?
Allow 24 inches of table edge per person for comfortable seating — the standard used across furniture sizing guides. That means a 4-person rectangular table should be about 48 inches long (2 people per side at 24 inches each), 6 people need about 72 inches, and 8 need about 96 inches. For formal settings, some guides accept 20 inches per person, but elbows will touch.
What width should a rectangular dining table be?
Most rectangular dining tables are 36 to 44 inches wide. 36 inches is the common width: enough for place settings on both sides plus shared dishes down the middle. 40 to 44 inches feels generous for serving platters. Below about 30 inches the table feels cramped for two facing diners.
What size round table seats 6 people?
A 48-inch round table comfortably seats 6. The math: the circumference must hold seats × 24 inches, so 6 people need at least 6 × 24 / π ≈ 45.8 inches of diameter — and 48 inches is the nearest standard size. For 8 people the minimum is about 61 inches, so a 60-inch table is slightly tight and 72 inches is the comfortable standard.
How much space should I leave around a dining table?
Leave 36 inches between the table edge and the wall or other furniture so people can walk behind seated diners. 24 inches is the minimum — enough to pull a chair out, but not to walk behind it. A quick rule of thumb: subtract 6 feet from your room's dimensions to find the maximum table size that keeps 36-inch clearance on all sides.
How do I size an extendable dining table?
Size the closed length for your everyday seat count and the extended length for your guest count, using the same 24-inches-per-person rule. The difference is the leaf extension you need — for example, 4 everyday seats need 48 inches and 8 guest seats need 96 inches, so you need 48 inches of extension, roughly four standard 12-inch leaves.
What height should a dining table and chairs be?
Standard dining tables are 28 to 30 inches tall, paired with dining chairs whose seat is about 18 inches high. That ratio gives comfortable legroom and lets forearms rest naturally on the table. Counter-height tables (around 36 inches tall) pair with taller stools, not standard dining chairs.
How big a room do I need for a 6-person dining table?
A 6-person rectangular table is about 72 × 36 inches. Add 36 inches of clearance on every side and the room should be at least 144 × 108 inches — 12 feet by 9 feet. With only 24-inch clearance (chairs pull out, no walking behind), a 10-foot by 7-foot room is the tight minimum.
Do oval tables follow the same size rules as rectangular ones?
Yes. Oval tables are sized with the same 24-inches-per-person length rule as rectangular tables, and the same 36 to 44-inch width band. The curved ends actually seat end diners a little more comfortably, and ovals without sharp corners work better in tight rooms — but the sizing math is identical.
