Frequently asked questions
How is winning percentage calculated?
The standard formula counts each tie as half a win: (Wins + Ties ÷ 2) ÷ (Wins + Losses + Ties). For example, a 60-30-10 record gives (60 + 5) ÷ 100 = 65%.
How are ties handled?
Three common methods: Standard counts each tie as half a win (65% for 60-30-10). Ties excluded ignores ties entirely: 60 ÷ 90 = 66.6667%. Soccer-style awards 3 points per win and 1 per tie, then divides by the maximum possible points: 190 ÷ 300 = 63.3333%.
What is the soccer-style winning percentage?
It treats winning percentage as points earned divided by maximum possible points. With 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw, a 60-30-10 record earns 3×60 + 10 = 190 points out of 3×100 = 300, which is 63.3333%.
Why not just divide wins by games played?
Wins divided by all games played understates performance because ties are not losses. The standard method fixes this by counting each tie as half a win, so 60-30-10 is 65% rather than 60%.
What happens if a team has not played any games?
Winning percentage is undefined for a 0-0-0 record because it would require dividing by zero. This calculator shows an honest error instead of 0% or NaN.
