Methodology & sources

  • Calorie values: per-serving calories, protein, carbohydrate, and fat are derived from USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy) per-100 g averages multiplied by standard serving weights (e.g., 1 cup cooked white rice = 158 g). Fast-food items (cheeseburger, fries, nuggets) use published chain nutrition figures (McDonald's).
  • Totals: each line contributes per-serving value × servings; calories are rounded to the nearest whole kcal, macros to 0.1 g.
  • Macro calorie split: protein × 4 + carbs × 4 + fat × 9 kcal/g (Atwater factors); percentages are each macro's share of macro-derived calories.
  • Daily reference: % of daily value uses a 2,000 kcal FDA general-nutrition reference — an orientation aid, not a personal target.
  • “Approx.” items are composite dishes whose recipes vary widely; values are rounded estimates. Prefer single-ingredient entries or a custom item from the label when precision matters.
  • Privacy: 100% client-side. Your meal is stored only in your browser's local storage; nothing is uploaded.

FAQ

How do I calculate the calories in my meal?
Search the built-in food database, tap Add on each item you ate, and adjust servings with the + and − steppers (quarter servings allowed). The tool sums calories and shows protein, carbohydrate, and fat totals plus the calorie split from each macro. You can also add a custom item with its own calorie value taken from a nutrition label.
How accurate are the calorie numbers?
Values are averages from USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy) for standard serving sizes; fast-food items use published chain nutrition figures. Real-world calories vary with brand, recipe, cooking method, and portion size, so treat every result as an educational estimate, not a laboratory measurement.
What is the difference between this and the Recipe Nutrition Calculator?
The Recipe Nutrition Calculator is ingredient-based: you enter raw ingredients by weight or volume to analyze a recipe per serving. This Meal Calorie Calculator is dish-based: you pick ready-to-eat foods and dishes by servings to total up a meal. Use the recipe tool when cooking from scratch; use this one when logging what you ate.
Is this the same as a daily calorie needs calculator?
No. This tool answers how many calories are in this meal. To find how many calories you need per day, use a TDEE-based daily needs calculator such as our Calorie Calculator.
How is the protein, carb, and fat calorie split calculated?
Protein and carbohydrates provide 4 kcal per gram and fat provides 9 kcal per gram (standard Atwater factors). The tool multiplies your macro grams by these factors and shows each macro's share of the meal's macro-derived calories.
Can I add a food that is not in the database?
Yes. Use Add custom item: enter a name, calories per serving (for example from the package label), and optional protein, carbohydrate, and fat grams. Custom items are included in totals and saved in your browser.
What does percent of daily value mean?
It compares your meal's calories to a 2,000 kcal reference daily intake (the FDA general-nutrition reference). It is a rough orientation aid, not a personal target; individual needs vary widely.
Why are some items marked approximate?
Composite dishes such as fried rice, tacos, or restaurant-style meals vary a lot by recipe. Those entries are marked approx. and rounded; when precision matters, prefer single-ingredient entries or a custom item taken from the label.
Does this replace medical or dietitian advice?
No. This is an educational estimator for general information only. It is not medical advice and cannot diagnose or treat any condition. Talk to a qualified health professional about your diet, especially with diabetes, eating disorders, pregnancy, or other health conditions.
Is my meal data sent anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser; your meal list is stored only in your browser's local storage. No account, no server, and no tracking of what you eat.
