How to measure your table
Accurate sizing starts with the table itself — never with an old tablecloth, which may have shrunk, stretched or lost its shape. All it takes is a tape measure and two minutes:
- Identify the shape. Round tables need one measurement (the diameter, straight across the center). Square tables need one side. Rectangular and oval tables need the length and the width — oval tables use the same formula as rectangular ones.
- Measure the tabletop in inches, the unit every standard tablecloth size is sold in. Write down the exact number, even a half inch — small errors show up as a visibly uneven drop on round tables.
- Push the chairs in before you decide on the drop. Fabric that pools on chair seats means the drop is too long for a dining setup.
- Pick the drop for how the table will be used (see the guide below), not just how it looks empty. Guest dining tables need leg room; display tables can go to the floor.
- Note the table height if you want a floor-length look. Standard banquet tables are 30 inches tall, so a 30-inch drop just touches the floor — on a 42-inch cocktail table the same drop ends a foot above it.
Drop lengths, explained
The drop is the single most misunderstood part of tablecloth sizing. It is the vertical distance from the tabletop edge to where the fabric ends — measured downward from the edge, never upward from the floor. Four categories cover nearly every situation:
| Drop | Called | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 6–8″ | Casual lap | Everyday family dining, outdoor parties, vendor and craft-fair tables where legs stay visible |
| 10–12″ | Everyday | Dining rooms, bistros and buffet service — fabric clears laps and chairs |
| 15″ | Formal lap | Wedding guest tables, banquets and corporate dinners; the most common formal choice |
| 29–30″ | Floor-length | Head tables, cake and gift tables, trade-show booths — hides legs and anything stored underneath |
Longer drops look more formal but cost more fabric, take longer to set up, and can pick up dirt outdoors. Event planners typically reserve floor-length cloths for focal tables and use shorter drops for guest dining.
Standard tablecloth sizes you can actually buy
Tablecloths are manufactured in fixed sizes, so the calculator above matches your exact measurement to the nearest standard size — always rounding up, because a slightly longer drop beats an exposed tabletop. These are the sizes stocked by most linen retailers:
| Shape | Standard sizes (inches) |
|---|---|
| Round (diameter) | 70″, 90″, 108″, 120″, 132″ |
| Square (side) | 52″, 54″, 60″, 70″, 72″, 84″, 90″ |
| Rectangle (W × L) | 42 × 84″, 42 × 108″, 60 × 84″, 60 × 102″, 60 × 120″, 60 × 126″, 72 × 120″, 72 × 144″, 90 × 132″, 90 × 156″ |
| Oval (W × L) | 70 × 90″, 90 × 120″, 90 × 132″, 108 × 144″ |

Worked examples
Example 1 — 60-inch round table, 15-inch drop
Apply the round formula: 60 + 2 × 15 = 90. You need a 90-inch round tablecloth, which is an exact standard size — so the drop is a true 15 inches all the way around, the classic formal dining look.
Example 2 — 6-foot table (72 × 30 inches), 12-inch drop
Length: 72 + 2 × 12 = 96; width: 30 + 2 × 12 = 54. The nearest standard size is 60 × 102, which gives a 15-inch drop on all four sides — a touch more formal than planned, and far better than paying for a custom 54 × 96.
Booth and conference tables
Not every table stands in the middle of a room. Two special placements change the math:
- Booth / against a wall. The side touching the wall gets no drop, so the fabric cannot bunch up behind the table. Length = table length + one drop; width = table width + 2 × drop. Pin or tape the back edge so the cloth cannot slide forward.
- Conference / head table. Three sides fall to the floor for a formal look while guests get a short drop on the sitting side: length = table length + 2 × table height; width = table width + sitting drop + table height. On a 30-inch-tall table this is the classic wedding head-table treatment.
Five sizing mistakes to avoid
- Measuring the old tablecloth instead of the table. Fabric lies; tape measures do not.
- Rounding the table measurement up “just in case.” The drop already adds the safety margin — rounding twice buys a cloth one size too big.
- Buying the smaller size when between standards. A cloth that is two inches short exposes the tabletop edge all around; two inches long just hangs slightly lower.
- Forgetting chair clearance. A 15-inch drop with chairs pushed in can become a 9-inch effective drop once someone sits down — fine for dining, wrong for a display table.
- Ignoring shrinkage. Cotton cloths can lose several inches in the wash. Either pre-wash before the event or buy polyester — or simply one size up.
Fabric and care tips
- Polyester barely shrinks or wrinkles and is the workhorse of event rentals. Cotton and blends feel nicer but can shrink up to about 4 inches on a large cloth.
- Wash floor-length cloths before the event, not after you discover they shrank.
- For outdoor events, skip the floor-length drop — wind turns extra fabric into a sail, and damp grass stains hems.
- A table runner (about a foot shorter than the cloth) adds color without changing the size math.
Frequently asked questions
What size tablecloth do I need for a 60-inch round table?
For a 60-inch round table, buy a 90-inch round tablecloth for a classic 15-inch drop (60 + 15 + 15 = 90), or a 120-inch round for a formal floor-length look on a standard 30-inch-tall table (60 + 30 + 30 = 120). A 108-inch cloth gives a 24-inch drop — elegant, but short of the floor.
How do you calculate tablecloth size?
Measure the table, choose your drop, then add twice the drop to every dimension. Round: tablecloth diameter = table diameter + 2 × drop. Square, rectangle and oval: length = table length + 2 × drop and width = table width + 2 × drop. Example: a 48 × 30-inch rectangular table with a 10-inch drop needs a 68 × 50-inch cloth (48 + 20 by 30 + 20).
What is drop length on a tablecloth?
Drop length is how far the fabric hangs below the tabletop edge, measured straight down from the edge. It does not include the table’s height. On a standard 30-inch-tall banquet table a 30-inch drop just touches the floor; on a 42-inch cocktail table the same 30-inch drop ends 12 inches above the floor.
What is the standard drop for a dining table?
For everyday dining, 6 to 12 inches is the comfortable range — the fabric clears laps and chairs. Formal dining and wedding guest tables usually use a 15-inch drop, the classic lap length that looks tailored without touching legs. Floor-length 30-inch drops are reserved for display tables, head tables and cake tables.
What size tablecloth fits a 6-foot rectangular table?
A standard 6-foot banquet table measures 72 × 30 inches. For a 15-inch drop buy a 60 × 102-inch cloth; for a formal floor-length look buy 90 × 132 inches (72 + 60 by 30 + 60). Both are standard retail sizes, so there is no need to order custom.
What size tablecloth fits an 8-foot rectangular table?
A standard 8-foot banquet table measures 96 × 30 inches. Buy 60 × 126 inches for a 15-inch drop, or 90 × 156 inches for floor length (96 + 60 by 30 + 60). Both are standard sizes stocked by most linen suppliers.
Should I size up or down when my table falls between standard sizes?
Always size up. A slightly larger cloth hangs a little lower and still covers the table; a smaller one leaves the tabletop exposed at the edges. Example: a 48-inch round table with a 15-inch drop needs exactly 78 inches — the nearest standard is 90 inches, which gives a generous 21-inch drop instead.
Can I use a round tablecloth on a square table?
Yes. A round cloth on a square table reaches your target drop only at the middle of each side and rides higher at the corners. For an even drape all the way around — especially a floor-length one — use a square cloth. As a reference, a 36-inch square table pairs with a 96-inch round or a 90-inch square for a formal look.
What size tablecloth do I need for a table pushed against a wall?
Use booth sizing: the side against the wall gets no drop. Tablecloth length = table length + one drop; width = table width + 2 × drop. A 72 × 30-inch buffet table against a wall with a 15-inch drop needs 87 × 60 inches exactly — buy the standard 60 × 102, which gives a 30-inch drop on the front edge and 15 inches on the sides.
How do you size a tablecloth for a conference or wedding head table?
Let three sides fall to the floor and keep a short drop where guests sit: length = table length + 2 × table height, width = table width + sitting drop + table height. For a 72 × 30-inch table that is 30 inches tall with a 12-inch sitting drop, that works out to 132 × 72 inches — the nearest standard size is 72 × 144.
Do tablecloths shrink after washing?
Polyester tablecloths barely shrink, which is why event rentals favor them. Cotton and cotton blends can shrink several inches — up to about 4 inches on a large cloth — so either pre-wash before a formal event or buy one size up. When in doubt, sizing up is safe: extra fabric just means a slightly longer drop.
How do I convert tablecloth sizes to centimeters?
Multiply inches by 2.54. A 90-inch round cloth is 228.6 cm across (90 × 2.54), and a 15-inch drop is 38.1 cm. This calculator accepts centimeters directly and converts behind the scenes, so you never have to do the math by hand.
