What size nightstand (bedside table) do you need? This bedside table size calculator matches height to your mattress, width to your bed size, and checks depth, the bed gap, and room space — in seven guided modes.

Standard nightstand dimensions are 23–28″ tall, 21–28″ wide, and 16–20″ deep — the standard bedside table size. Beyond the standard, these four rules come from retail and interior-design buying guides (see Sources below):
| Bed size | Width | Guide nightstand width |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38″ | Narrow — under 21″ |
| Twin XL | 38″ | Narrow — under 21″ |
| Full | 54″ | Standard — 21–28″ |
| Queen | 60″ | Standard — 21–28″ |
| King | 76″ | Wide — over 29″ |
| California king | 72″ | Wide — over 29″ |
Bed widths are standard US dimensions; always measure your own frame. Estimates only — always confirm with your retailer before ordering.
Height, width, gap and depth rules: Wayfair “Nightstand Dimensions” guide (T12031) and Apartment Therapy “What Height Should Your Nightstand Be?” (Mar 2024). Bed widths: standard US mattress dimensions cited in bed-size guides. Converted with the exact 1″ = 2.54 cm factor.
For a queen bed (60" wide), the guide bands are: height 23-28" (58.42-71.12 cm), width 21-28" (53.34-71.12 cm), and depth 16-20" (40.64-50.80 cm) as the standard class. A 25" (63.50 cm) tall nightstand sits level with a 25" mattress top — the ideal. In nightstand dimensions cm terms: 23-28 in = 58.42-71.12 cm, 21-28 in = 53.34-71.12 cm. Enter your exact mattress-top height in the calculator to get your band.
King and California king beds pair with wide nightstands over 29" (73.66 cm). Height follows the same rule: within 3" of your floor-to-mattress-top measurement, no more than 4" above it — beds with box springs or thick toppers often need a tall nightstand over 30" (76.20 cm).
Twin and twin XL beds (38" wide) take narrow nightstands under 21" (53.34 cm). Because twin setups are often low platform beds, also check the height solver: a mattress top of 22" points to a low nightstand under 23" with a 19-23" band.
Full beds (54" wide) use the standard width band of 21-28" (53.34-71.12 cm) — the same as queen. Height follows your mattress top: a typical 24-25" mattress top gives the standard 23-28" (58.42-71.12 cm) height band.
The right nightstand height is the distance from the floor to the top of your mattress, give or take: choose within 3" of that number and never more than 4" (10.16 cm) above the mattress top. A quick nightstand height vs bed height check is to stand at the bedside — the nightstand top should be level with the mattress, not towering over it. Height classes: low under 23", standard 23-28", tall over 30", extra-tall over 35".
Slightly taller is fine — up to 4" (10.16 cm) above the mattress top is the guide's upper limit. Beyond that, reaching items from bed gets awkward and the proportions look off. If your mattress top is 31", a 35" (88.90 cm) nightstand is the boundary case; 35.1" would be flagged by this calculator.
Place the nightstand 3-6" (7.62-15.24 cm) from the edge of the bed. Closer than 3" leaves no room for bedding; farther than 6" puts items out of comfortable reach. Use the gap checker mode to test your actual measurement — 3" and 6" exactly both pass.
Width follows bed size: narrow under 21" for twin/twin XL, standard 21-28" for full/queen, wide over 29" for king/Cal king. Wondering how deep should a nightstand be? Nightstand depth comes in three classes: shallow 12-16" (30.48-40.64 cm) for tight rooms, standard 16-20" (40.64-50.80 cm) for everyday use, deep 20-30" (50.80-76.20 cm) for extra storage. Most nightstands fall in the 12-30" depth range.
Bedside table size, night table size, and bedside cabinet size all follow the same bands — they are three names for the same object as a nightstand, and this bedside table size guide covers every name. Bedside table dimensions follow the same bands: bedside table height level with the mattress top (within 3", max 4" above), width by bed size (under 21" twin, 21-28" full/queen, over 29" king), depth 12-30". The standard bedside table size is 23-28" tall, 21-28" wide, 16-20" deep.
A pair looks balanced when the bed is queen size or larger (60"+) and you have at least 21" of free space on each side. For a twin bed or a cramped corner with under 21" per side, one is enough — the pair planner mode applies this rule to your numbers.
No — this tool sizes the nightstand furniture itself (height, width, depth, gap, placement). The lamp that sits on top is a different object with its own rules: use our table lamp size calculator for bedside lamp height and shade proportions. Lamp sits on nightstand; this tool sizes the nightstand.
