One nickel is worth exactly $0.05, which is five cents. Ten nickels make $0.50, and twenty nickels make $1.00.

How much is 40 nickels?
40 nickels are worth $2.00 (40 x $0.05 = $2.00). That is exactly one standard bank roll of nickels.

No, this tool covers US coins only. For British coins, use our pence to pounds converter.

Yes. Every US half-dollar ever minted is still worth exactly $0.50 in face value, even though the coin is rare in everyday circulation.
How the math works
Exactness. 1 nickel = $0.05 exactly, so every conversion is computed in integer
cents (dollars = nickels × 5 ¢), never in floating point. Dollar inputs are
parsed as text and rounded half-up to the cent, so 2.675 becomes 268¢, not 267¢.
Non-exact amounts. If a dollar amount is not a multiple of a coin (for example $0.07 in nickels), the converter reports the whole coins plus the leftover cents: 1 nickel + 2¢.
Change breakdown. The US coin system is canonical, so the greedy algorithm (take as many quarters as possible, then dimes, nickels, pennies) always yields the fewest coins.
Roll sizes. Penny 50, nickel 40, dime 50, quarter 40, half-dollar 20 — the standard US bank roll quantities.
