Newton to Joules Calculator
Force times distance equals energy. Three modes: newtons to joules, joules to newtons, joules to distance. Free, private, runs in your browser.
The formula
Work (energy) equals force multiplied by distance. One joule is defined as exactly one newton-meter: 1 J = 1 N-m. So when force is in newtons and distance is in meters, the answer is directly in joules.
Worked examples (verified)
| Input | Result |
|---|---|
| 100 N x 2 m | 200 J (0.2 kJ, 0.0555556 Wh, 0.189563 BTU) |
| 1 lbf x 1 ft | 1.35582 J |
| 2.5 kN x 800 m | 2,000,000 J (2,000 kJ, 555.556 Wh, 1,895.63 BTU) |
| 200 J over 2 m | 100 N of force |
| 500 J from 25 N | 20 m of distance |
- This tool: force acting over a distance to energy (newtons to joules, joules to newtons, joules to distance).
- kg-to-newtons: mass to force. Use it when you start from kilograms, not newtons.
- joules-to-kj: energy unit conversion. Use it after you have joules and want kJ, calories, or watt-hours.
- energy-unit-converter: the full energy-unit hub (12 units).
