Cashier Change Calculator

Compute change from the purchase total and cash paid, with an optimal rupiah denomination breakdown (fewest bills/coins).

Educational calculation — not financial advice. Always recount change manually during cash transactions.

Change = Cash Paid − Purchase Total

Change with Limited Cashier Stock

Enter the number of bills/coins of each denomination available in the cash drawer. The calculator pays as much change as possible from stock and reports the shortfall.

Two-Payment Comparator

Compare the change and its denomination breakdown for two different payment amounts — e.g., paying Rp100,000 vs Rp50,000 + Rp20,000.

Wallet Solver: Enough or Short?

Enter the denominations in your wallet. The calculator totals them, checks whether it covers the purchase total, and breaks down the change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Explains the concept of change, rupiah denominations, and this tool's limits. This is educational material, not financial advice.

What is change and how is it calculated?

Change is the difference between the money a buyer pays and the purchase total: change = cash paid − purchase total. Example: a purchase total of Rp87,500 paid with Rp100,000 gives change = Rp100,000 − Rp87,500 = Rp12,500. This calculator also breaks Rp12,500 into the fewest denominations: 1 × Rp10,000 + 1 × Rp2,000 + 1 × Rp500.

Why does this calculator's denomination breakdown always use the fewest bills/coins?

Because the rupiah denomination system is canonical: each denomination is worth at least twice the one below it (Rp100 = 2 × Rp50, Rp500 = 2.5 × Rp200, and so on). In such a system, the greedy method — always take the largest denomination that fits — is proven to yield the minimum number of bills/coins. This claim has been verified computationally: greedy was compared against an optimal dynamic program for every multiple of Rp50 up to Rp2,000,000 with not a single deviation.

What is the difference between a change calculator and a tip calculator?

A tip calculator computes a percentage EXTRA for service added to the bill before paying, while a change calculator computes the DIFFERENCE after paying: cash paid minus the purchase total. They answer different questions — tip is about how much extra is appropriate, change is about how much must come back. To compute tips and split bills, use a tip calculator and bill splitter.

What if the cashier rounds change to the nearest Rp50 or Rp100?

Some cashiers round change to the smallest practical denomination. Mode 1 of this calculator offers rounding to the nearest Rp50 or Rp100 (half up). Example: change of Rp12,475 rounds to Rp12,500. Rounding only changes the change being broken down, not the purchase total.

What if the cash paid is less than the purchase total?

The calculator shows the shortfall, not negative change. Example: a Rp87,500 purchase paid with Rp50,000 shows a shortfall of Rp37,500 — the buyer needs to add Rp37,500 to make it exact. The cashier-stock mode also reports when the available denominations are not enough for exact change, along with the unpaid amount.

How is this different from a money counter?

A money counter answers what the TOTAL value of a stack of denominations you hold is, while this calculator answers how much CHANGE comes from a transaction: cash paid minus the purchase total, then broken down into rupiah denominations. This calculator's wallet solver mode does use denomination input like a money counter, but its purpose differs: checking whether the wallet contents cover one purchase total and what the change is, not computing a general total.

Which rupiah denominations does this calculator use?

The eleven circulating rupiah denominations: Rp100,000, Rp50,000, Rp20,000, Rp10,000, Rp5,000, Rp2,000, Rp1,000, Rp500, Rp200, Rp100, and Rp50. These are all the denominations used to break down change in every mode, including the limited cashier-stock mode and the wallet solver mode.
