Middle School GPA Calculator
Enter a letter grade for each class and get your GPA on the standard 4.0 scale. No credit hours needed: every class counts equally by default, the way most middle schools do it.

How the math works
Each letter grade becomes grade points on the 4.0 scale. Add the points, divide by the number of classes:
| Grade | Points | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ / A | 4.0 | C+ / C / C- | 2.3 / 2.0 / 1.7 |
| A- / B+ / B | 3.7 / 3.3 / 3.0 | D+ / D / D- | 1.3 / 1.0 / 0.7 |
| B- / C+ | 2.7 / 2.3 | F | 0.0 |
Example 1: simple average (no credits). Grades A, B, A, C:
(4.0 + 3.0 + 4.0 + 2.0) ÷ 4 = 13.0 ÷ 4 = 3.25, about a B+ average.
Example 2: plus/minus grades. Grades A-, B+, C:
(3.7 + 3.3 + 2.0) ÷ 3 = 9.0 ÷ 3 = 3.00, a B average.
Example 3: electives at half weight. Math A (core), English B+ (core), Art A (elective), PE B (elective):
(4.0 + 3.3 + 4.0×0.5 + 3.0×0.5) ÷ (1 + 1 + 0.5 + 0.5) = 10.8 ÷ 3.0 = 3.60.
Example 4: two semesters. Semester 1: A, B → 3.50. Semester 2: B, C → 2.50.
Year GPA = (4.0 + 3.0 + 3.0 + 2.0) ÷ 4 = 3.00.
Need credit hours or college planning instead?
This tool is built for middle school: a simple no-credits average by default. If you are in high school or college, use our GPA Calculator Suite instead. It handles credit hours, weighted AP/Honors grades, and what-if planning that this middle-school tool intentionally leaves out.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good GPA in middle school?
On the standard 4.0 scale, a 3.0 GPA (a straight-B average) is solid, 3.5 or higher is strong, and 3.75 or higher is excellent. Most middle schools consider anything above 3.0 to be good academic standing.
How is middle school GPA calculated?
Each letter grade is converted to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0), the points are added up, and the total is divided by the number of classes. This calculator does exactly that, with no credit hours required, because most middle schools weight every class equally.
Do middle schools use plus and minus grades?
Many do. On the common 4.0 scale an A- is worth 3.7, a B+ is 3.3, and a B- is 2.7. Use the plus/minus toggle above to match your school's grading system. Turning it off treats A+ and A- as a plain A (4.0).
Do electives count toward my GPA?
Usually yes. Classes like art, music, and PE normally count the same as core classes. Some schools give core subjects (math, English, science, history) extra weight, so this calculator has an optional setting that counts electives at half weight to match that policy.
What is the difference between this and the GPA Calculator Suite?
The GPA Calculator Suite is built for high school and college: it handles credit hours, weighted AP and Honors grades, and what-if planning. This tool is the middle-school companion: a simple no-credits average by default, a plus/minus toggle, and an optional core-versus-elective weighting setting.
Is an A+ worth more than an A?
On the standard 4.0 scale, no: both A+ and A are worth 4.0 grade points. The difference only matters on a 4.3 or 5.0 scale, which middle schools rarely use. With the plus/minus toggle on, A+ still counts as 4.0 here.
Does middle school GPA matter for college?
Colleges look at high school grades, not middle school grades, so your middle school GPA does not go on college applications. It still matters because strong study habits now make high school much easier, and some high school placement decisions consider 8th-grade performance.
How can I raise my GPA?
Because GPA is a simple average, every class counts the same. Raising your lowest grade helps the most: moving one class from a C (2.0) to a B (3.0) raises a 6-class GPA by about 0.17 points. Focus extra effort where the grade is lowest first.
Can I average two semesters into a year GPA?
Yes. Mark each class as Semester 1 or Semester 2 and the calculator shows each semester GPA plus a combined year GPA, which is the average across all classes from both semesters weighted equally.
What does a 3.25 GPA mean?
A 3.25 GPA means your grades average out between a B (3.0) and a B+ (3.3), closer to B+. For example, grades of A, B, A, C give (4.0 + 3.0 + 4.0 + 2.0) divided by 4, which equals 3.25.
