Letter grade to GPA chart
This grade to GPA chart lists every letter grade on all three GPA scales, with typical percentage bands: the GPA scale chart most U.S. schools follow. Plus/minus moves a grade 0.3 points from the whole letter.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97-100 | 4.0 | 4.3 | 5.0 |
| A | 93-96 | 4.0 | 4.0 | 5.0 |

| D- | 60-64 | 0.7 | 0.7 | 1.7 |
| F | below 60 | 0.0 | 0.0 | 0.0 |

Worked examples
Example 1: What is a B+ in GPA?
- Find the B+ row in the chart: it covers 87-89 percent.
- Read the 4.0 column: 3.3.
Answer: a B+ is worth 3.3 grade points on the 4.0 scale (4.3 on the weighted 5.0 scale).
Example 2: A+ on the 4.0 scale vs the 4.3 scale
- On the standard 4.0 scale, an A+ counts as 4.0, the same as a plain A.
- On the 4.3 scale, the same A+ earns a premium: 4.3.
Answer: 4.0 on the 4.0 scale, 4.3 on the 4.3 scale. Only schools that award an A+ premium use 4.3.
Example 3: Average of A, B+, and C on the 4.0 scale
- Convert each grade: A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3, C = 2.0.
- Add them: 4.0 + 3.3 + 2.0 = 9.3.
- Divide by 3 grades: 9.3 / 3 = 3.10.
Answer: a 3.10 GPA, about a B average.
Example 4: Average of A+, A, and B on the weighted 5.0 scale
- Convert each grade on the 5.0 scale: A+ = 5.0, A = 5.0, B = 4.0.
- Add them: 5.0 + 5.0 + 4.0 = 14.0.
- Divide by 3 grades: 14.0 / 3 = 4.67.
Answer: a 4.67 weighted GPA.
How the conversion works
A letter grade converts to grade points by looking it up in a fixed table. That lookup is the whole of letter grade to GPA conversion: there is no formula, just the agreed mapping. The whole letters are evenly spaced one point apart on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0). A plus sign adds 0.3 and a minus sign subtracts 0.3: B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7. The 4.3 scale changes only the A+ cell to 4.3. The weighted 5.0 scale adds a 1.0 bonus to every passing grade for honors, AP, or IB courses, so an A becomes 5.0 and a B becomes 4.0, while an F still earns 0.0. That bonus is the entire difference in the unweighted vs weighted GPA debate.
To average several grades, convert each one to grade points, add the points, and divide by the number of grades. Batch mode above does exactly this and reports the result to two decimals.
Frequently asked questions
What is a B+ in GPA?
A B+ is worth 3.3 grade points on the standard 4.0 scale, and the same 3.3 on the 4.3 scale. It usually covers 87-89 percent. On a weighted 5.0 scale, a B+ is worth 4.3.
What is an A- in GPA?
An A- is worth 3.7 grade points on both the 4.0 and 4.3 scales, typically covering 90-92 percent. On a weighted 5.0 scale, an A- is worth 4.7.
Is a 3.5 GPA good?
Yes. A 3.5 GPA sits between a B+ (3.3) and an A- (3.7), well above the U.S. high school national average of about 3.0. It is competitive for admission to many colleges, though the most selective schools typically expect 3.7 or higher.
What is a 4.0 GPA scale?
The 4.0 scale is the standard unweighted GPA system used by most U.S. schools: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, and F = 0.0, with plus and minus grades worth 0.3 more or less than the whole letter. It is called unweighted because harder courses earn no bonus points.
What is a 4.3 GPA scale?
The 4.3 scale is identical to the 4.0 scale except that an A+ earns 4.3 instead of 4.0. Every other grade has the same value as on the 4.0 scale, so only schools that award a premium for A+ use it.
What is a 5.0 weighted GPA scale?
A 5.0 scale is a weighted system that adds 1.0 bonus point for harder courses such as honors, AP, or IB classes: an A becomes 5.0, a B becomes 4.0, a C becomes 3.0, and a D becomes 2.0, while an F stays 0.0. GPAs above 4.0 are only possible on weighted scales like this one.
How do plus and minus grades affect GPA?
A plus adds 0.3 grade points and a minus subtracts 0.3 from the whole letter. For example, B+ is 3.3, B is 3.0, and B- is 2.7; C+ is 2.3, C is 2.0, and C- is 1.7. The one exception is A+, which is 4.0 on the standard scale just like a plain A.
Is an A+ worth 4.0 or 4.3?
Both, depending on the school. On the standard 4.0 scale an A+ is worth 4.0, the same as an A. On the 4.3 scale an A+ is worth 4.3. On a weighted 5.0 scale an A+ is worth 5.0. Check which scale your school uses before converting.
What GPA is an F?
An F is worth 0.0 grade points on every scale: 4.0, 4.3, and 5.0. Because it contributes zero quality points, a single F pulls an average down far more than any other grade.
What letter grade is a 3.0 GPA?
A 3.0 GPA corresponds to a B average. As reference points, 4.0 is an A average, 3.7 is A-, 3.3 is B+, 2.7 is B-, 2.0 is a C average, and 1.0 is a D average.
Can my GPA be higher than 4.0?
Yes, but only on a weighted scale. On the unweighted 4.0 scale the maximum is 4.0. On a weighted 5.0 scale, bonus points for honors, AP, or IB courses can push a GPA above 4.0, up to 5.0.
How do I average several letter grades into one GPA?
Convert each letter to its grade points, add them up, and divide by the number of grades. For example, A, B+, and C on the 4.0 scale become 4.0 + 3.3 + 2.0 = 9.3, and 9.3 divided by 3 is a 3.10 GPA. Paste your list into the batch mode above to do this automatically.
Do all schools use the same letter-to-GPA conversion?
No. The table on this page follows the most common U.S. convention, but schools vary: some do not use plus/minus grades, some award 4.3 for A+, and percentage cutoffs shift by a point or two. Always confirm with your school's official grading policy for anything that matters, such as transcripts or applications.
What percentage is an A?
An A typically covers 93-96 percent, with A+ at 97-100 and A- at 90-92. Cutoffs vary slightly between schools, but this 93-96 band is the most common U.S. convention.
What is the difference between this converter and a GPA calculator?
This page answers one quick question: what GPA value does a letter grade equal. A full GPA calculator, like our gpa-calculator-suite, plans whole semesters with credit hours, combines them into a cumulative GPA, and solves what-if scenarios such as the grades needed to reach a target GPA. Use this converter for lookups and that suite for planning.
How do I convert a percentage grade to GPA?
Match the percentage to its letter band first, then to grade points. For example, 88 percent falls in the 87-89 band, which is a B+ worth 3.3 on the 4.0 scale. The full chart above lists every band.
