Planning estimate. Sizes here follow published patio guides (36 in chair clearance, 3-4 ft walkways, 14-18 ft fire pit circle). Check local code and HOA rules for setbacks, coverage caps, and fire clearances before you build.
Scope: this tool sizes the patio. For a full material takeoff — paver count with patterns and waste, base, bedding, pallets, and cost — use our paver calculator.

Patio size FAQs

What size patio do I need for 4 people?
A 10 by 10 ft patio (100 sq ft) seats four around a standard 48 in table with 36 in of chair clearance on every side. That lands in the 50 to 100 sq ft small band for dining 2 to 4. If you also want a grill or prep corner, step up to 12 by 16 ft (192 sq ft).
What is a good patio size for a typical family?
Most patio guides point to 12 by 16 ft (192 sq ft) at the small end up to 16 by 20 ft (320 sq ft) at the large end. 12 by 16 fits a table for six, or a table for four plus a grill; 16 by 20 fits a table for six plus a lounge set sharing one lane. Start from what goes on the patio, not from a round number.
How much clearance do chairs need around a patio table?
Allow 36 in from the table edge on every side with chairs, so people can slide back and stand up. That is why a 5 ft (60 in) round table for six needs about an 11 by 11 ft footprint, matching the guideline of at least 10.5 by 10.5 ft and ideally 12 by 12 ft. Keep walkways 3 ft where people cross and 4 ft for the main route from the door to the yard.
How big should a patio be for a fire pit with chairs?
Plan a 15 by 15 ft zone (225 sq ft) for a 4 ft fire pit with chairs: 2.5 ft from the pit edge to the chairs plus 2.5 ft of circulation behind them. That sits inside the 14 to 18 ft circle recommended for a fire pit ring with seating. Wood-burning pits may need more clearance, so check with your fire marshal.
How do I estimate patio size from the number of guests?
Use about 25 sq ft per seated diner as a starting point, then add room for what else happens on the patio. Eight guests for a full party setup points to about 300 sq ft, closest common size 16 by 20 ft (320 sq ft). Six for dining plus a grill lands around 150 sq ft, closest common size 12 by 16 ft (192 sq ft).
Will a 16 by 20 ft patio fit in my 60 by 80 ft yard?
With 5 ft setbacks on each side, the buildable area is 50 by 70 ft, so a 16 by 20 ft patio fits easily. Its 320 sq ft covers about 6.67 percent of the 4,800 sq ft yard, well under a typical 40 percent coverage cap. Setbacks and caps are set by your city and HOA, so confirm the real numbers locally.
How many pavers do I need for a 12 by 16 ft patio?
With 12 by 12 in pavers you need 12 by 16, or 192 pavers, because the dimensions already divide evenly. With 16 by 16 in pavers on a 10 by 12 ft patio you need 8 by 9, or 72 pavers, and the width nudges to 10.67 ft so the field runs full pavers. Add about 10 percent waste, so order 212 and 80 respectively. This rounds per paver, not by area division.
Should I use a patio size calculator or a paver calculator?
They answer different questions. A patio size calculator sizes the space: how big the patio should be for your guests, furniture, fire pit, and yard. A paver calculator does the material takeoff: paver counts with laying patterns and waste, borders, base and bedding volumes, pallets, and cost. Size first with this tool, then take the final dimensions to a paver calculator.
What is the smallest practical patio size?
About 6 by 8 ft (48 sq ft) is the minimum that comfortably holds a bistro set for two, leaving roughly 2.5 ft from the table edge to the patio edge for a chair and circulation. Below that the space works as a landing, not a seating area.
What do common patio sizes look like in meters?
10 by 10 ft is 3.05 by 3.05 m (about 3 by 3 m); 12 by 16 ft is 3.66 by 4.88 m; 16 by 20 ft is 4.88 by 6.10 m. In area, 100 sq ft is 9.29 sq m. The meter toggle on this calculator shows both units for every result.
