Holding Period Return (HPR) Calculator

Calculate holding period return — total return over the holding period — from initial value, final value, and income received (dividends, coupons, or profit share). Formula: HPR = (final value − initial value + income) ÷ initial value.

Pertanyaan Umum (FAQ)

What is holding period return (HPR)?

Holding period return (HPR) is an investment’s total return over the period it was held, computed from the change in value plus income received during that period. Example: initial capital Rp1,000, final value Rp1,200, Rp50 dividend gives 25% HPR.

What is the holding period return formula?

The formula: HPR = (final value − initial value + income received) ÷ initial value. Worked example: value change Rp1,200 − Rp1,000 = Rp200; total return Rp200 + Rp50 = Rp250; HPR = Rp250 ÷ Rp1,000 = 25%.

What is the difference between HPR and annualized HPR?

HPR measures return over the holding period as-is, while annualized HPR normalizes it to a one-year basis so different periods can be compared: (1 + HPR)^(365 ÷ days) − 1. Example: 25% HPR over 182.5 days equals 56.25% annualized; 25% HPR over 365 days stays 25% annualized.

What is the difference between HPR and dividend yield?

Dividend yield measures only the income component: dividends ÷ initial value (example: Rp50 ÷ Rp1,000 = 5%). HPR measures the total: value change plus income (same example = 25%). This tool computes HPR; to split out the capital gains yield and dividend yield portions, use the capital gains yield calculator.

Can holding period return be negative?

Yes. Negative HPR means final value plus income is less than the initial capital. Example: Rp1,000 capital, Rp800 final value, Rp20 dividend gives −18% HPR (Rp180 loss).

Apa keterbatasan holding period return?

HPR ignores the timing of mid-period cash flows (additional deposits or withdrawals are not reflected) and its annualized version assumes returns can compound at the same rate. For annualized return comparisons from a CAGR angle, see the annualized rate of return calculator.

Can HPR be used to project future returns?

No. HPR is a historical measure of a period that already happened, not a projection and not investment advice. Past returns do not determine future results.
