Grams to Calories Calculator

Convert grams of protein, carbohydrate, fat, alcohol, and fiber into calories (kcal) using verified Atwater factors. Includes common food presets per 100 g from USDA FoodData Central and a percentage breakdown per macronutrient.

Educational estimate, not medical or nutrition advice. This calculator only converts macronutrient grams into calories for learning purposes. Results are estimates, not a diagnosis, not diet recommendations, and not a substitute for a doctor’s or dietitian’s advice. Consult a professional for health decisions.
Quick examples:

Fields may be left empty (treated as 0). Fiber note: on nutrition labels, fiber is usually already included in total carbohydrate. If you copy total carbohydrate from a label, leave the fiber field empty to avoid double counting.

Atwater factor table (verified reference)

MacronutrientEnergy per gramNotes
Protein4 kcal/gGeneral Atwater factor
Karbohidrat4 kcal/gGeneral Atwater factor
Lemak9 kcal/gGeneral Atwater factor
Alkohol (etanol)7 kcal/gNot an essential macronutrient
Dietary fiber≈ 2 kcal/gSoluble fiber estimate (fermented in the gut)

Source: the Atwater system, developed by USDA chemist Wilbur Olin Atwater in the late 19th century; the 4/4/9 factors are widely used in nutrition science and food labelling. The fiber factor ≈ 2 kcal/g is a general estimate for soluble fiber.

Frequently asked questions

Important note: the answers below are general education about grams-to-calories conversion. This is not medical advice, not personal nutrition advice, and is not intended to diagnose or treat any condition. For personal nutrition needs, consult a doctor or dietitian.
How many calories are in 1 gram of protein, carbohydrate, and fat?
According to the Atwater system: 1 gram of protein = 4 kcal, 1 gram of carbohydrate = 4 kcal, and 1 gram of fat = 9 kcal. Example: 30 grams of protein contain about 30 × 4 = 120 kcal, while 20 grams of fat contain about 20 × 9 = 180 kcal.
How do I convert protein grams to calories?
Multiply the grams of protein by 4. Example: 25 grams of protein × 4 = 100 kcal. The general formula: calories = (protein × 4) + (carbohydrate × 4) + (fat × 9) + (alcohol × 7) + (fiber × 2). The calculator above does it automatically, complete with percentages.
How many calories are in 1 gram of alcohol?
Alcohol (ethanol) contains about 7 kcal per gram, almost twice as much as protein or carbohydrate. Example: 14 grams of alcohol contain about 14 × 7 = 98 kcal. Alcohol is not an essential macronutrient: the body does not need it to survive.
How many calories are in 1 gram of fiber?
Dietary fiber is estimated to contribute about 2 kcal per gram, mainly soluble fiber fermented by gut bacteria. Note: on nutrition labels, fiber is usually already included in total carbohydrate. If you copy total carbohydrate from a label, leave the fiber field empty to avoid double counting.
What is the Atwater system?
The Atwater system is a method for estimating the metabolic energy of food developed by USDA chemist Wilbur Olin Atwater in the late 19th century. He set physiological energy factors of 4 kcal/g for protein and carbohydrate, 9 kcal/g for fat, and 7 kcal/g for alcohol. These factors still underpin nutrition labelling in many countries today.
Is kcal the same as calories on food labels?
Yes. The word calories on food labels actually means kilocalories (kcal), sometimes written Cal with a capital C. 1 kcal = 1,000 small calories. This calculator shows results in kcal, the same unit as food labels.
Why do the calculator results differ slightly from USDA or package labels?
This calculator uses general Atwater factors (4/4/9/7/2). USDA FoodData Central uses ingredient-specific Atwater factors for some foods, so the figures can differ slightly. Example: 100 g of grilled chicken breast (31 g protein, 3.6 g fat) is calculated by the calculator at about 156 kcal, while USDA reports 165 kcal. Both are reasonable estimates from the same data.
How many calories are in 100 grams of cooked white rice?
With the estimated USDA composition (protein 2.7 g, carbohydrate 28.2 g, fat 0.3 g, fiber 0.4 g), 100 g of cooked white rice contains about (2.7 × 4) + (28.2 × 4) + (0.3 × 9) + (0.4 × 2) = 127 kcal. Select Cooked white rice on the Common foods tab to calculate other weights, for example 150 g.
Can this calculator be used to plan a weight-loss diet?
Not directly. This calculator is only an educational tool for converting macronutrient grams to calories. It does not assess your daily calorie needs, does not account for health conditions, and does not provide diet recommendations. For meal plans or weight targets, consult a doctor or dietitian.
Are this calculator’s results medical or nutrition advice?
No. All figures on this page are estimates for educational purposes, not medical or nutrition advice. Each food’s composition can vary by brand, recipe, and cooking method, and everyone’s needs differ. If you have a specific health condition, consult a professional before changing your diet.
