Compare two vehicles
Old car vs new car fuel cost: annual gallons, cost, % saved, and cost per mile/km. The classic car fuel savings comparison.
Upgrade payback period
How long until fuel savings repay the pricier car's extra cost? This upgrade payback calculator divides extra purchase cost by annual fuel savings. Annual savings auto-fill from the Compare tab.
Driving-habits savings estimator
Five habits, published U.S. DOE ranges. These eco driving fuel savings tips are tick-box simple: choose what you will change and how fully (slider) — combined multiplicatively so overlapping habits are not double-counted.
Trip fuel planner
This trip fuel cost estimator shows fuel needed and fuel cost for any trip, one-way or round trip. Fuel only — tolls, hotels, and food belong to the Road Trip Cost Calculator.
Worked example
Driving 12,000 miles/year, switching from a 20 MPG car to a 30 MPG car at $3.50/gal:
- Fuel: 600.00 → 400.00 gal/year — your gallons saved per year: 200.00 (757.08 L)
- Cost: $2100.00 → $1400.00 — you save $700.00/year, a 33.3% fuel saving
- Fuel cost per mile drops from $0.175 to $0.117
- If the 30 MPG car costs $4,000 more, the fuel savings payback period is 5.7 years (5-year net $-500.00; 10-year net $3000.00)
- Five driving habits at half effort on a $2,100.00/year fuel bill save an estimated $323.05/year (range $189.70–$545.63)
- A 300-mile trip at 25 MPG needs 12.00 gallons costing $42.00

How it's calculated
- Fuel per year = annual distance ÷ fuel economy, in consistent units. Metric:
liters = km ÷ 100 × L/100km. Imperial:gallons = miles ÷ MPG. - Unit constants:
L/100km = 235.214583 ÷ MPG(US) = 282.4809363 ÷ MPG(UK) = 100 ÷ (km/L). US gallon = 3.785411784 L; mile = 1.609344 km. - Savings % = 1 − (new fuel ÷ old fuel).
- Fuel savings payback period = extra purchase cost ÷ annual fuel savings. This fuel cost per mile calculator also shows cost per mile (or per km) for each car: cost per mile = annual cost ÷ annual distance. Zero or negative savings → honestly reported as Never.
- Habit ranges come from U.S. DOE (fueleconomy.gov) published figures — see FAQ. Combined as
1 − Π(1 − si)because habits overlap. - The MPG illusion and fuel savings (Larrick & Soll, 2008): equal MPG jumps save very different fuel: 10→20 MPG over 12,000 miles saves 600 gallons/year, but 20→50 MPG saves only 360 gallons/year — compare fuel used per year, not the MPG gap.
- Honest limits: fuel only — purchase taxes, insurance, depreciation, and maintenance differences are not included. Habit figures are estimates, not guarantees. All math is 100% client-side; nothing leaves your browser.
Frequently asked questions
How to calculate fuel savings between two cars?
Divide your annual miles by each car's MPG to get gallons per year, then subtract. Example: 12,000 miles at 20 MPG uses 600 gallons; at 30 MPG it uses 400 gallons — a saving of 200 gallons. Multiply by your fuel price ($3.50/gal gives $700.00/year). This annual fuel savings calculator does the math in any unit: MPG (US/UK), L/100km, or km/L.
What is the MPG illusion, and why does it matter for savings?
The MPG illusion fuel savings trap: MPG is not linear, so equal MPG jumps save very different amounts of fuel. Going from 10 to 20 MPG over 12,000 miles saves 600 gallons a year, but going from 20 to 50 MPG saves only 360 gallons — even though the second jump looks bigger. Always compare fuel used per year (or cost per mile), not the MPG difference, when judging fuel economy savings.
Does this tool compare gas cars with electric cars?
No. This fuel savings calculator compares two gasoline or diesel vehicles (ICE-to-ICE) and estimates driving-habit savings. For a gas-vs-electric comparison, use our Electric Vehicle Fuel Savings Calculator (#1299), which models annual fuel cost of a gas car vs an EV plus EV price-premium payback.
How is the upgrade payback period calculated?
Payback years = extra purchase cost divided by annual fuel savings. Example: a $4,000 pricier car that saves $700.00/year in fuel pays back in 5.7 years. If annual savings are zero or negative, the tool honestly reports Never instead of a number. The 5-year and 10-year net figures subtract the extra cost from total savings.
How much fuel can I save by slowing down on the highway?
Slow down to save gas: the U.S. DOE notes each 5 mph over 50 mph lowers fuel economy by about 7%. Dropping from 75 to 65 mph typically saves around 10% (range 5-14% in this tool's estimator). On 12,000 miles a year at 25 MPG, that is roughly 48 gallons, or about $168.00 at $3.50/gal.
Does aggressive driving really waste that much fuel?
Yes. U.S. DOE and Oak Ridge National Laboratory research finds aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration, hard braking) can lower gas mileage by roughly 15-30% at highway speeds and 10-40% in stop-and-go traffic; fueleconomy.gov summarizes it as up to 33% on the highway. Gentler starts and braking is usually the single biggest habit saving.
How much does tire pressure affect fuel economy?
Tire pressure fuel savings come from lower rolling resistance: under-inflated tires raise it. U.S. DOE figures show proper inflation improves gas mileage by 0.6% on average and up to 3% in some cases. For a detailed per-PSI estimate, see our Tire Pressure Calculator's underinflation fuel-cost estimator; this tool uses the conservative 0.6-3% band for the combined habit estimate.
Does idling waste a noticeable amount of fuel?
Idling fuel waste is real: an idling engine gets 0 MPG and burns roughly a quarter to a half gallon per hour. Cutting about 10 minutes of unnecessary idling a day saves roughly 23 gallons a year — about 4-5% of a typical 12,000-mile driver's fuel. Restarting uses only about 10 seconds' worth of fuel, so turning off the engine pays off quickly.
UK MPG vs US MPG — which one does this calculator use?
Both, plus metric. Pick MPG (US), MPG (UK), L/100km, or km/L for each input. The imperial gallon is about 20% larger than the US gallon, so 40 UK MPG equals only 33.3 US MPG — the tool converts with the exact constants (235.214583 for US, 282.4809363 for UK) so the comparison is always fair. To convert l/100km to mpg by hand, divide 235.214583 by the US MPG figure (the same constant run in reverse).
How accurate are the driving-habit savings estimates?
They are estimates, not guarantees, shown as ranges. Each habit uses published U.S. DOE (fueleconomy.gov) figures, and because habits overlap (slower driving also means less braking), the combined effect is multiplied, not added — which avoids overstating savings. Your car, traffic, and climate move the real number up or down.
Can I use this fuel savings calculator for a road trip?
Yes — for road trip fuel cost, the Trip tab estimates fuel needed and fuel cost for any distance, one-way or round trip, in miles or km. For a full road-trip budget with tolls, hotels, and food, use our Road Trip Cost Calculator; for how far a tank of fuel takes you, use our Fuel Distance Calculator.
Where do the habit percentage ranges come from?
From the U.S. Department of Energy's fueleconomy.gov: about 7% lower economy per 5 mph over 50 mph; up to 33% loss from aggressive driving on the highway; about 4% gain from fixing an out-of-tune car; 0.6-3% from proper tire inflation; and roughly 1/4-1/2 gallon per hour burned while idling.
