Flooring Calculator
A free flooring estimator for hard-surface floors. Answer how much flooring do I need, how many boxes to buy, what pattern waste really costs, and what the whole job totals — for solid hardwood, engineered hardwood, laminate, and LVP.
Scope: this flooring calculator plans plank flooring only. For tile, use our tile calculator; for carpet, use our carpet calculator.
1. Room area — flooring square footage calculator
Measure the square feet of flooring needed first. Pick the room shape; closets and nooks get measured as their own rectangles.
2. Flooring type picker — flooring material calculator
Pick your material. This panel works as a laminate flooring calculator, a vinyl plank flooring calculator, a hardwood flooring calculator, or an engineered hardwood flooring calculator — the LVP setting is our dedicated lvp flooring calculator mode. Box coverage and waste presets follow each type. Tile and carpet are not calculated here; they have dedicated tools linked above.
Tip: the coverage printed on the box always wins — edit the field above to match your exact product.
3. Box calculator — how many boxes of flooring do I need
Boxes = order quantity ÷ box coverage, always rounded up. Flooring is sold by the full box, so a fractional result like 11.88 still means 12 boxes.
4. Stagger layout planner — stagger flooring calculator
A flooring plank calculator and flooring layout calculator in one: enter plank size and the joint offset (stagger) to plan rows, pieces per row, and row-end cut waste. End joints must be offset so no two joints line up — that is called racking the floor.
5. Waste by pattern — flooring waste calculator
Cut waste depends on the laying pattern. Presets follow NWFA and manufacturer installation guidance; adjust the slider for your own comfort margin.
- Straight / parallel — 7% (accepted 5–10% range): rows run parallel to the longest wall; only end-of-row cuts.
- Diagonal — 15%: every perimeter plank is an angled cut, and angled offcuts cannot be reused on the opposite side.
- Herringbone / chevron — 20%+: each piece is mitered into a zigzag; precision pattern work consumes extra at every border and corner. A herringbone flooring calculator must never use straight-lay waste math.
6. Underlayment & trim takeoff — underlayment calculator
Underlayment covers the same order quantity as the flooring. Quarter round follows the room perimeter minus doorways; each doorway also needs one transition strip — this flooring transition calculator counts one strip per door.
7. Cost estimator — flooring cost calculator
Material price per sq ft times the order quantity, plus installation. As a laminate flooring cost calculator the material line typically runs $1.50–$5 per sq ft; solid hardwood (hardwood flooring cost per square foot $6–$12) and LVP ($2–$7) are preset per type above and editable here.

Flooring calculator — frequently asked questions
How much flooring do I need for an 18 x 12 ft room?
A 18 x 12 ft room has 216 sq ft of floor. This flooring square footage calculator adds your waste allowance next: with 10% waste the order quantity is 216 x 1.10 = 237.6 sq ft.
That 237.6 sq ft is the number you take to the store — not the bare 216 sq ft. Running short mid-install is the classic flooring mistake, because dye lots change between production runs.
How many boxes of flooring do I need?
Divide the order quantity by the coverage printed on the box, then round up — this is exactly what a box of flooring calculator does. For the 18 x 12 ft example: 237.6 sq ft / 20 sq ft per box = 11.88, so you buy 12 boxes (240 sq ft), leaving 2.4 sq ft for future repairs.
Flooring is sold by the full box only, so the answer to “how many boxes of flooring do I need” is always rounded up, never down.
How many boxes of laminate flooring cover a 10 x 12 ft room?
120 sq ft net, plus 10% waste = 132 sq ft. At 20 sq ft per box: 132 / 20 = 6.6, which rounds up to 7 boxes (140 sq ft purchased, 8 sq ft spare for repairs).
Always check the coverage printed on your exact product — laminate boxes commonly cover 15 to 30 sq ft, and the box count changes with it.
How does plank stagger affect my waste?
End joints must be offset so no two joints line up — that is called racking the floor, and the stagger pattern decides where each row starts. With 48 x 7 in planks in the 18 x 12 ft room, this stagger flooring calculator plans 21 rows x 5 pieces = 105 pieces, and each row leaves a 24 in offcut (21 x 24 x 7 in = 24.5 sq ft of cut waste).
A 6 in stagger repeats its joint pattern every 8 rows (48 / 6); an 8 in stagger repeats every 6 rows; random stagger avoids repetition entirely. Larger stagger offsets look more natural but strand more short offcuts.
How much extra flooring should I order for diagonal or herringbone patterns?
Straight / parallel: 7% (the accepted 5–10% range). Diagonal: 15% — diagonal flooring waste is higher because every perimeter plank is cut at an angle, and angled offcuts cannot be reused on the opposite side. Herringbone or chevron: 20% or more — each piece is mitered and the precision pattern consumes extra material at every border and corner.
The waste presets in this flooring waste calculator follow NWFA and manufacturer installation guidance, and a herringbone flooring calculator must never use straight-lay waste math.
How much underlayment and quarter round do I need?
Underlayment covers the same order quantity as the flooring: this underlayment calculator divides 237.6 sq ft by 200 sq ft per roll = 1.19, rounded up to 2 rolls.
Quarter round follows the room perimeter minus doorways — contractors searching for a quarter round calculator flooring takeoffs will recognize the same math: 2 x (18 + 12) = 60 ft, minus 2 doors x 3 ft = 54 linear ft. This flooring transition calculator also counts one transition strip per doorway, so 2 strips here.
What does vinyl plank flooring cost per square foot installed?
Material: 237.6 sq ft x $3.50 = $831.60. Professional installation at $4.50 per sq ft = $1,069.20, for an installed total of $1,900.80 — so the vinyl plank flooring cost per square foot installed is $8.00.
This flooring installation cost calculator prices DIY and pro side by side: DIY install brings the same project down to the $831.60 material cost.
Can I use this flooring calculator for tile or carpet?
No — this tool plans hard-surface plank flooring: solid hardwood, engineered hardwood, laminate, and LVP. Tile needs grout lines, thinset mortar and tile-box math, so use our tile calculator instead. Carpet is sold by the roll with seam planning, so use our carpet calculator instead.
How do L-shaped rooms or multiple rooms work?
Measure each rectangle and add the areas: an L-shape is two rectangles, for example 12 x 10 ft plus 8 x 6 ft = 120 + 48 = 168 sq ft. For multi-room jobs this flooring project calculator sums every room first, then applies one waste percentage and one box size to the total.
Each doorway between rooms needs its own transition strip, so count doorways while you measure.
Is DIY or professional installation cheaper for flooring?
DIY saves the entire labor line. In the worked example the DIY project costs $831.60 while professional installation costs $1,900.80 — a saving of $1,069.20.
Budget 2–3 days for a first 200 sq ft room, plus a tapping block, pull bar and spacers. Pro installation buys speed, tight cuts around obstacles, and warranty coverage on the labor itself.
