Not what you're paving? Read this first.
This tool prices new asphalt driveways built from scratch on bare ground — excavation, base, then paving. Four nearby tools cover the neighboring jobs:
- Need material quantities (tons of hot mix, gallons of sealer) priced from your own $/ton figures? Use the Asphalt Calculator.
- Resurfacing or overlaying an existing driveway? Use the Driveway Resurfacing Cost Calculator (resurface-vs-replace advisor included).
- Pouring a concrete driveway instead? Use the Concrete Driveway Cost Calculator.
- Spreading gravel, not pavement? Use the Gravel Driveway Calculator.
New asphalt driveway cost estimator
DIY vs pro — is paving it yourself worth it?
Honest DIY math: you buy the hot mix and stone at plant prices and rent the equipment; the "pro" column is the installed estimate above for the same spec. Note that true hot-mix DIY is rare — laying asphalt needs a paver and a roller while the mix is hot. The realistic middle ground is doing your own excavation and base prep, then hiring a paving crew just for the asphalt.
Lifespan cost & material comparison
Upfront price is only half the story. A maintained asphalt driveway lasts 15–25 years; this tab adds scheduled sealcoating and compares asphalt against concrete, pavers and gravel on cost per year of service.
How the estimate works
Every figure on this page comes from one transparent model. The installed price is built from three per-square-foot components plus optional line items — no black box, no email wall:
| Component | Formula |
|---|---|
| Area | length (ft) × width (ft) = sq ft |
| Asphalt layer | area × $3–$5/sq ft × (thickness ÷ 3) — material scales with compacted thickness |
| Labor (grading, paving, rolling) | area × $2–$5/sq ft × site factor × region factor |
| Gravel base | area × $1–$3/sq ft by base depth (4/6/8 in) |
| Site factor | easy ×0.95 · average ×1.00 · difficult ×1.15 (labor only) |
| Region factor | South ×0.92 · Midwest ×1.00 · Northeast ×1.12 · West ×1.15 (labor only) |
| Edging | 2 × length × $2.50/lin ft |
| Sealcoat / removal | area × $0.20/sq ft · area × $1.50/sq ft |
| Small-job mobilization | +$400 flat under 300 sq ft (crew, paver, trucks still roll) |
The low–high range is the all-lows to all-highs corner of the 2026 bands — your quotes should land inside it if the scope matches. Site and region factors apply to labor because materials travel less than wages do.
2026 asphalt driveway cost components (per sq ft)
| Cost component | Per sq ft | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hot-mix asphalt material | $3 – $5 | At 3 in compacted; based on $100–$150/ton plant prices |
| Labor — grading, paving, rolling | $2 – $5 | Varies by region and crew size |
| Crushed-stone base (6–8 in) | $1 – $3 | Required for new installs on bare soil |
| Total installed | $7 – $15 | Full project, excluding old-driveway removal and permits |

Asphalt driveway cost by size (3 in, average site, 6 in base, Midwest)
| Driveway size | Area | Installed range | $/sq ft (mid) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 200 sq ft | 200 sq ft | $1,700.00 – $2,900.00 | $11.50 |
| 400 sq ft | 400 sq ft | $2,600.00 – $5,000.00 | $9.50 |
| 600 sq ft | 600 sq ft | $3,900.00 – $7,500.00 | $9.50 |
| 800 sq ft | 800 sq ft | $5,200.00 – $10,000.00 | $9.50 |
| 1000 sq ft | 1000 sq ft | $6,500.00 – $12,500.00 | $9.50 |
| 1200 sq ft | 1200 sq ft | $7,800.00 – $15,000.00 | $9.50 |
Small jobs carry a higher effective $/sq ft because the contractor still mobilizes a crew, trucks, a paver and rollers — hence the $400 small-job line in the estimator.
Asphalt driveway cost by thickness (600 sq ft, same spec)
| Compacted thickness | Installed range | Mid | $/sq ft (mid) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 in | $3,300.00 – $6,500.00 | $4,900.00 | $8.17 |
| 2.5 in | $3,600.00 – $7,000.00 | $5,300.00 | $8.83 |
| 3 in | $3,900.00 – $7,500.00 | $5,700.00 | $9.50 |
| 4 in | $4,500.00 – $8,500.00 | $6,500.00 | $10.83 |
Don't pick thickness on price alone: the section depends on soil, base, drainage, climate and vehicle loading. 3 in is the standard residential answer.
Asphalt vs concrete vs pavers vs gravel (600 sq ft)
| Material | Installed $/sq ft | Install (600 sq ft) | Lifespan | Maintenance | Lifetime | $/year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Asphalt (new install) | $9.50 | $5,700.00 | 20 yr | Sealcoat every 3–5 yr (~$0.20/sq ft) | $6,300.00 | $315.00 |
| Concrete (poured) | $8.00 | $4,800.00 | 30 yr | Low — cleaning, joint sealing | $5,160.00 | $172.00 |
| Concrete pavers | $17.50 | $10,500.00 | 40 yr | Low — joint sand, weed control | $11,220.00 | $280.50 |
| Gravel | $2.00 | $1,200.00 | 10 yr | High — regrading, top-up stone | $4,200.00 | $420.00 |
Lifetime = install + scheduled maintenance over the service life. Asphalt is usually cheapest upfront; concrete often wins per year of service; gravel looks cheap until you price the regrading.
Worked examples
Example 1 — standard 2-car driveway, 20 × 30 ft
- Area: 20 × 30 = 600 sq ft.
- Asphalt layer, 3 in: 600 × $4.00 × (3÷3) = $2,400.00.
- Labor, average site, Midwest: 600 × $3.50 × 1.00 × 1.00 = $2,100.00.
- Base, new 6 in stone: 600 × $2.00 = $1,200.00.
- Total: $5,700.00 ($9.50/sq ft), range $3,900.00–$7,500.00 — inside the published $7–$15 band and the $4,000–$8,000 average.
Example 2 — small 10 × 20 ft driveway with edging + sealcoat
- Area: 10 × 20 = 200 sq ft.
- Asphalt layer, 2 in: 200 × $4.00 × (2÷3) = $533.33.
- Labor, easy site, South: 200 × $3.50 × 0.95 × 0.92 = $611.80.
- Base, new 4 in stone: 200 × $1.50 = $300.00.
- Edging, both long sides: 2 × 20 × $2.50 = $100.00; sealcoat: 200 × $0.20 = $40.00.
- Small-job mobilization (under 300 sq ft): $400.00.
- Total: $1,985.13 ($9.93/sq ft) — small jobs cost more per foot because the equipment still has to show up.
Example 3 — DIY vs pro on the 20 × 30 ft driveway
- Hot mix needed: 600 × (3÷12) ft × 145 lb/ft³ ÷ 2,000 = 10.88 tons × $125 = $1,359.38.
- Base stone, 6 in with compaction: 24.80 tons × $30 = $744.00.
- Equipment rental (compactor, roller, tools): $750.00.
- DIY materials total: $2,853.38 vs pro installed $5,700.00 — savings $2,846.62 (49.94%), before valuing your weekends and the risk of a cold joint.
Practical tips
- The base is everything. Most premature asphalt failures trace to a thin or poorly compacted base and bad drainage — not the asphalt itself. Never let a low bid shrink the base.
- Get 3 itemized quotes and compare scope, not just the total: compacted thickness, base depth, and what's excluded (removal, permits, drainage).
- Pave in warm months. Hot mix needs heat to compact properly; cold-weather paving is a common source of early raveling.
- Sealcoat 6–12 months after install (not immediately — the asphalt needs to cure), then every 3–5 years. It blocks UV and water, the two things that age asphalt fastest.
- Fix drainage first. Water sitting on or under the pavement will destroy a $7,000 driveway faster than heavy trucks will.
- Don't choose asphalt when you want 30+ years of near-zero maintenance (consider concrete or pavers), or when local rules restrict impervious surfaces — check permits either way.
Asphalt driveway cost FAQs
How much does an asphalt driveway cost?
For a standard 20 × 30 ft driveway (600 sq ft) at 3 inches thick over a new 6-inch gravel base, this calculator estimates $5,700.00 (range $3,900.00–$7,500.00), or $9.50 per square foot — inside the published 2026 band of $7–$15 per square foot installed, and inside the $4,000–$8,000 average for a typical 2-car driveway. Your price moves with thickness, site conditions, base depth, region and extras like edging or old-driveway removal — try the Cost Estimator tab above with your own dimensions.
What is the asphalt driveway cost per square foot?
A new asphalt driveway costs $7–$15 per square foot fully installed in 2026. That breaks into three parts: hot-mix material $3–$5, labor for grading, paving and rolling $2–$5, and crushed-stone base $1–$3 (6–8 inches, required on bare soil). Small driveways run higher per foot because the crew and equipment still have to mobilize — the estimator adds a $400 small-job line under 300 sq ft.
How thick should an asphalt driveway be?
Three inches compacted is the standard residential answer. Use 2 inches only for light-duty areas with no heavy vehicles, and 4 inches for RVs, work trucks or soft soil. On a 600 sq ft driveway at the standard spec, thickness moves the mid estimate from $4,900.00 at 2 in, to $5,300.00 at 2.5 in, $5,700.00 at 3 in, and $6,500.00 at 4 in. Do not pick thickness on price alone — soil, base, drainage and climate matter more than saving one inch.
Does asphalt driveway cost change by region?
Yes — mostly through labor, not materials, which is why this calculator applies the regional factor to the labor line only: South ×0.92, Midwest ×1.00, Northeast ×1.12, West ×1.15. On the 20 × 30 ft example the labor line is $1,932.00 in the South versus $2,415.00 in the West — a $483.00 spread on labor alone. Treat the bands as planning figures and get local quotes.
Is it cheaper to DIY an asphalt driveway?
On materials alone, yes — by a wide margin. For the 20 × 30 ft, 3-inch example: DIY materials (10.88 tons of hot mix at $125/ton = $1,359.38, base stone = $744.00, plus $750.00 equipment rental) total $2,853.38 versus $5,700.00 pro installed — a saving of $2,846.62 (49.94%). The catch: laying hot mix needs a paver and a roller while the mix is hot, so true DIY is rare. The realistic middle ground is doing your own excavation and base prep, then hiring a crew just for the asphalt. Use the DIY vs Pro tab with your own spec.
How long does an asphalt driveway last?
15–25 years with maintenance; 20 years is the planning figure this calculator uses. Sealcoat 6–12 months after install (not immediately — fresh asphalt needs to cure), then every 3–5 years. On the 600 sq ft example, five sealcoats at $0.20/sq ft add $600.00 over 20 years, for a lifetime cost of $6,300.00 — $315.00 per year of service. Skip the sealcoating and UV plus water will age the surface far faster.
Asphalt vs concrete driveway cost — which is cheaper?
Upfront, usually asphalt: $7–$15 per square foot installed versus $6–$12 for poured concrete. But cost per year of service tells a different story. On a 600 sq ft driveway: asphalt $6,300.00 over 20 years = $315.00/year; concrete $5,160.00 over 30 years = $172.00/year; pavers $11,220.00 over 40 years = $280.50/year; gravel $4,200.00 over 10 years = $420.00/year. Asphalt wins bid day; concrete usually wins the lifetime — pick based on how long you will own the home. See the Lifespan & Compare tab.
Should I include sealcoating in the estimate?
Budget it, even if you do not buy it in year 1. Pro-applied sealcoat runs about $0.20 per square foot — $120.00 on a 600 sq ft driveway — and the calculator can add it as a line item. Plan on a coat 6–12 months after paving, then every 3–5 years: five applications over a 20-year life. It blocks UV oxidation and water intrusion, the two fastest agers of asphalt, and it is the cheapest life-extension money in paving.
How much does excavation and base prep add?
The gravel base is $1–$3 per square foot depending on depth: 4 inches ≈ $1.50, 6 inches ≈ $2.00, 8 inches with excavation ≈ $2.50 (mid-band). On the 600 sq ft example the 6-inch base is $1,200.00 of the $5,700.00 total. Site condition multiplies the labor line: easy ground ×0.95, difficult ground (slope, clay, drainage work) ×1.15. The contractor rule of thumb: the base is everything — most early failures are base failures, so never accept a bid that thins the base to hit a number.
How is this different from the Asphalt Calculator?
The Asphalt Calculator (/tools/asphalt-calculator/) is a material estimator: you enter your own $/ton prices and it computes tons of hot mix, base aggregate and gallons of sealer to order, with a DIY-vs-contractor materials comparison. This page is the opposite direction: it estimates the full installed project cost from published 2026 contractor bands — excavation, base, labor, edging, sealcoat and region — without you typing any unit prices. Ordering materials? Use that tool. Budgeting the whole job? You are in the right place.
I already have a driveway — should I resurface or replace it?
This calculator only prices new driveways built from scratch. If you have an existing driveway that is cracked, faded or raveling, use the Driveway Resurfacing Cost Calculator (/tools/driveway-resurfacing-cost-calculator/): it prices 9 options from sealcoat to full replacement and includes a resurface-vs-replace advisor score. As a rule of thumb, resurfacing (overlay) makes sense when the base is still sound; widespread alligator cracking or settlement means replacement.
What about a concrete or gravel driveway instead?
Different materials, different math, different tools. For a new poured-concrete driveway (slab thickness, PSI, finishes, removal), use the Concrete Driveway Cost Calculator (/tools/concrete-driveway-cost-calculator/). For loose stone (base + top layers, tons, truck loads), use the Gravel Driveway Calculator (/tools/gravel-driveway-calculator/). The Lifespan & Compare tab above also lines all four materials up on cost per year of service.
