Estimates from the published per-carat table (PriceScope, Oct 2026) and the lab-grown ladder (Liori Diamonds, 2026), scaled by carat curves from market averages. See “How the estimate works”. Not a quote — actual jeweler prices vary.

How the estimate works

The center-stone price is per-carat price × carat curve × cut × shape, then the setting and metal are added:

Stone price = table(color, clarity) × curve(carat) × cut multiplier × shape multiplier. Ring total = stone + setting base + metal adder.
  • Natural per-carat table: PriceScope’s October 2026 aggregated asking prices for round diamonds (1.00–1.19 ct), color D–M × clarity FL–SI2. G/VS2/Excellent round anchors at $4,517 per carat.
  • Carat curve: interpolated from 2026 market averages — 0.5 ct ≈ 0.27×, 1.5 ct ≈ 2.40×, 2.0 ct ≈ 4.81×, 3.0 ct ≈ 12.69× the 1-carat price. Diamond prices grow much faster than weight.
  • Lab-grown base: $800 per carat for 1.00 ct round G/VS2 (indicative online-retail, Liori Diamonds 2026 ladder), with its own flatter curve (2.0 ct ≈ 2.13×) and milder quality multipliers.
  • Cut & shape: Excellent = 1.00, Very Good ≈ 0.93, Good ≈ 0.85; round = 1.00, fancy shapes ≈ 0.78–0.85 (modeled estimates, labeled in the methodology).
  • Settings & metals: solitaire $450, pavé $1,400, halo $1,900, three-stone $2,200, vintage $1,600, bezel $900; 18k gold +$300, platinum +$700 (typical US online-retail ranges).

Worked examples (computed by the engine)

Example 1 — the classic 1.00 ct natural ring

1.00 ct, G color, VS2 clarity, Excellent cut, round natural diamond in a solitaire 14k-gold setting: stone $4,517 + setting $450 = $4,967. Right at the national average — the configuration most buyers actually land on.

Example 2 — same ring, lab-grown

Identical spec, lab-grown stone: $800 + $450 = $1,250. You save $3,717 (82.3% of the stone price) for a stone that is chemically and optically identical.

Example 3 — $3,000 budget, maximized

The optimizer’s top pick for $3,000 (lab-grown, round): a 3.15 ct I/SI1 Excellent stone at $2,549.43 + solitaire $450 = $2,999.43. For natural at the same budget the top pick is 0.85 ct H/SI1 ($2,910.17 total).

Example 4 — the salary rule vs reality

On a $72,000 salary, the 3-month rule demands $18,000 — nearly 4× the $4,600 national average. The rule was designed to sell diamonds, not to fit budgets.

Example 5 — financing the $4,967 ring

10% down ($497), 14.99% APR, 24 months: $216.71/month, about $731 in interest. A 0%-for-12-months store card paid off in time costs $0 in interest — miss the deadline and deferred interest can add ~25% APR backdated to day one.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I spend on an engagement ring?

There is no correct number. The Knot 2026 Real Weddings Study puts the US average at $4,600, and most couples spend $2,000–$6,000. The right budget is what fits your savings and debt without stress — the average couple spends far less than any salary rule suggests.

What is the average cost of an engagement ring in 2026?

About $4,600 overall, per The Knot 2026 Real Weddings Study of 10,000+ couples. Split by diamond type: roughly $7,000 for natural-diamond rings and $4,300 for lab-grown rings. Lab-grown center stones now account for 61% of engagement rings, up 239% since 2020.

Is the 3-month salary rule real?

No — it was De Beers marketing, not financial advice. The company promoted a 1-month-salary guideline in the 1930s, raised it to 2 months by mid-century, and pushed 3 months in 1980s advertising after its 1948 “A Diamond Is Forever” campaign. On a $72,000 salary the rule demands $18,000 — nearly 4 times the $4,600 national average.

How much cheaper are lab-grown diamonds than natural?

Typically 60–80% cheaper at the same spec. In this tool’s engine a 1.00 ct G/VS2/Excellent round costs $4,517 natural versus $800 lab-grown — an 82.3% saving on the stone for a diamond that is chemically and optically identical. The trade-off is resale: lab-grown stones retain near-zero resale value.

How much does a 1 carat diamond cost?

For a 1.00 ct G/VS2/Excellent round natural diamond, about $4,517 per carat (PriceScope, October 2026) — roughly $4,967 set in a solitaire 14k-gold ring. The identical lab-grown spec is about $800 for the stone, or $1,250 as a finished ring.

How much does an engagement ring setting cost?

Typical US online-retail ranges: solitaire $450, bezel $900, pavé $1,400, vintage $1,600, halo $1,900, three-stone $2,200. Metal adds roughly $300 for 18k gold and $700 for platinum over 14k gold. At lab-grown prices the setting can be a third or more of the total ring cost.

What engagement ring can I get for $3,000?

This tool’s budget optimizer picks a 3.15 ct I/SI1 Excellent lab-grown round ($2,549.43) in a solitaire 14k-gold setting for $2,999.43. The same $3,000 buys about a 0.85 ct H/SI1 natural diamond ($2,910.17 total) — the lab-grown arbitrage in one number.

What color and clarity grades are the best value?

The sweet spot most buyers land on is G–H color, VS2–SI1 clarity, Excellent cut — eye-clean to almost everyone at normal viewing distance, without paying for grades only a microscope can see. A D/IF stone can cost 3× a G/VS2 of the same weight with no visible difference on the finger.

Should I finance an engagement ring?

Only on terms you can clear fast. Financing the $4,967 example ring with 10% down at 14.99% APR over 24 months costs $216.71/month and about $731 in interest. Watch “0% for 12 months” store cards: miss the payoff date and deferred interest is typically backdated to day one at around 25% APR.

How much does engagement ring insurance cost?

Dedicated jewelry insurance typically runs 1–2% of the ring’s value per year. On the $4,967 example ring that is about $74.51/year at 1.5%. Insure it from day one — loss and mysterious disappearance are the claims that matter.

Does a bigger carat always mean better value?

No — diamond prices grow much faster than weight. In this tool’s curve a 2.00 ct natural stone costs about 4.81× the 1.00 ct price, not 2×; a 3.00 ct costs about 12.69×. That is why two smaller stones (or a lab-grown stone) often beat one big natural diamond on value.

How accurate is this engagement ring cost calculator?

It is an estimate, not a jeweler quote. Natural prices anchor to PriceScope’s October 2026 per-carat table and lab-grown prices to the 2026 Liori Diamonds ladder, scaled by market carat curves. Real prices move with certification lab, fluorescence, proportions, inventory and retailer markup. Model vintage: October 2026.
