Scope boundary
This tool sizes the desk itself — width, depth, height, knee clearance, room fit, and cable plan. It does not size the lamp that sits on the desk: that is the job of our table lamp size calculator, which has a dedicated desk-lamp mode. Chair sizing is likewise separate — see the accent chair size calculator.
Worked examples
- Dual 27″ monitors: screens span 49.06″ → recommended desk 54–66″ wide, 24–30″ deep.
- 5 ft 8 in tall: ergonomic estimate 27.5″ sitting (69.85 cm) and 42″ standing (106.68 cm).
- 60 × 24″ desk, 2 monitors: longest cable run ≈ 62.42″ → 6-ft display cables, plan 8 power outlets.
Methodology & sources
Rules are taken from published ergonomic guidance, not invented: standard sitting desks run 48–72″ wide × 24–30″ deep × 28–30″ tall, with 29″ the common default, and per-body-height charts give the sit/stand estimates (effydesk, Standard Desk Dimensions). Workstation rules — ≥28″ front-edge width, ≥29″ depth preferred (≥24″ with a keyboard tray), 22–48″ adjustable height, 28.5″ fixed height, and 20.5″/30″ knee width with 17.3″/23.6″ knee/foot depth — follow UC Berkeley's ANSI/HFES 100-2007-based checklist. Monitor viewing depth ≥30″ and the 17″/24″/20″ knee-clearance minimums follow OSHA-based workstation guidelines; the standing keyboard-height band of roughly 36–46.5″ is OSHA's. Monitor panel widths assume 16:9 panels (width = diagonal × 16/√337); eye-to-screen distance assumes eyes ~2″ behind the front edge. Estimates only — confirm with your retailer before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
What size desk do I need?
Start from your equipment. A single 27-inch monitor setup fits a compact desk 30–42 inches wide; dual 27-inch monitors (49.06 inches of screen) need 54–66 inches; a triple 24-inch setup with a docked laptop and tower needs 96–108 inches. In every case pair the width with 24–30 inches (60.96–76.20 cm) of depth. The setup sizer above computes your exact band from your gear.
What are the standard desk dimensions?
Standard desk dimensions for sitting desks are 48–72 inches wide (121.92–182.88 cm), 24–30 inches deep (60.96–76.20 cm), and 28–30 inches tall (71.12–76.20 cm). These bands cover computer desk dimensions and general office desk dimensions. Writing desk dimensions run shallower at 20–24 inches deep, while executive desk dimensions run larger at 60–72 × 30–36 inches.
How deep should a desk be?
The standard desk depth is 24–30 inches (60.96–76.20 cm). For desk depth for monitor setups, 24 inches puts your eyes about 22 inches from the screen — inside the 20–26 inch range most guides use for how far should monitor be from eyes. On the desk depth 24 vs 30 question: 30 inches is the generous end of the standard band, not too deep; below 20 inches is too shallow for monitor work.
How wide should a desk be?
The standard desk width starts at 28 inches for the front edge — the ergonomic minimum for a computer setup. Beyond that, width follows your gear: a 27-inch monitor is 23.53 inches wide, so a single screen fits a 30–42 inch desk; two 27-inch monitors span 49.06 inches and need 54–66 inches; add about 10 inches for an on-desk PC tower, 14–18 inches for a laptop, and 18 inches for a printer.
How tall should a desk be?
The standard desk height is 28–30 inches (71.12–76.20 cm), with 29 inches the most common default. For a personalized number, use the desk height calculator mode above: the ergonomic desk height for your height at 5 ft 8 in (desk height for 5'8") is about 27.5 inches sitting (69.85 cm), slightly below a fixed 29-inch desk — a keyboard tray or footrest closes the gap. The same desk height for my height logic applies at any stature: match the surface to your seated elbow height.
What height should a standing desk be?
Most people land between 38 and 46 inches (96.52–116.84 cm) for standing work. The standing desk height calculator estimates about 42 inches (106.68 cm) for someone 5 ft 8 in tall and about 38.5 inches (97.79 cm) for someone 5 ft 4 in tall. Choose a desk that adjusts at least 22–48 inches so both your sitting and standing heights are covered.
How much knee clearance under desk do I need?
Desk knee clearance follows four minimums: at least 27 inches (68.58 cm) from the floor to the underside of the desk, at least 17 inches (43.18 cm) of clear depth at knee level, at least 24 inches (60.96 cm) at foot level, and at least 20 inches (50.80 cm) of clear width — 30 inches for wheelchair access. These knee clearance desk dimensions come from OSHA-based workstation guidelines; the checker above tests your desk against all four.
What desk size for dual monitors (2 monitors) do I need?
Two 27-inch 16:9 monitors span about 49.06 inches including a 2-inch gap, so the recommended desk size for 2 monitors (dual monitors) is 54–66 inches wide with 24–30 inches of depth. If your PC tower also sits on the desk, add roughly 10 inches and step up to a 60–72 inch desk.
What desk size for triple monitors (3 monitors) do I need?
Three 24-inch monitors plus a docked laptop and an on-desk PC tower span about 90.76 inches of equipment, so the desk size for 3 monitors (triple monitors) lands at 96–108 inches wide with 24–30 inches of depth. That is effectively two desks or one extra-long surface — if it will not fit your room, a monitor arm reclaims about 6 inches of depth per screen.
What is the right desk width for 27 inch monitors?
A 27-inch 16:9 panel is 23.53 inches wide, so the right desk width for 27 inch monitors in a single-screen setup is a compact 30–42 inch desk. For comparison, the desk width for 32 inch monitor setups with a tower and printer on the desk lands at 60–72 inches, since a 32-inch panel alone is 27.89 inches wide.
What desk size for ultrawide monitor do I need?
A 34-inch 21:9 ultrawide panel is about 31.25 inches wide — wider than a 32-inch 16:9. The desk size for ultrawide monitor planning therefore starts at a 36–48 inch desk for a single 34-inch ultrawide, with the standard 24–30 inches of depth. Pick the 34″ ultrawide option in the setup sizer above.
What is the best desk size for home office use?
For a home office, a compact desk 30–42 inches wide is the sweet small desk size — more precisely, a small home office desk size of 30–42 inches fits laptop or single-monitor work, and the setup sizer confirms a single 27-inch monitor fits 30–42 inches. Check the room planner next — you need the desk depth plus about 30 inches of chair pull-out — and the knee clearance checker to confirm your chair fits underneath.
What desk size for laptop-only work is best?
For laptop-only work, the desk size for laptop setups is a compact 30–42 inches wide with 20–30 inches of depth — a shallow 20-inch depth is fine without a monitor. A docked laptop needs about 14 extra inches of width; an open laptop beside a monitor needs about 18 inches.
Is 30 inch desk too deep?
No — 30 inches is the top of the standard 24–30 inch band and the depth several ergonomic guidelines prefer for monitor work. At 30 inches of depth your eyes sit about 28 inches from the screen, slightly past the 20–26 inch optimal range but perfectly usable. Past 36 inches a desk becomes oversized: the keyboard moves out of comfortable reach.
How much space behind desk chair do I need?
Allow about 30 inches of chair pull-out space behind the desk. In the desk fit in room calculator, a 72-inch wall with 96 inches of room depth fits a 72 × 36 inch desk after the 30-inch pull-out. A 48 × 48 inch nook fails: only 18 inches of depth remain, below the 20-inch minimum — use a wall-mounted folding desk there.
What are the standard retail desk sizes?
Common retail widths are 36, 42, 47, 48, 55, 60, 63, 72, and 80 inches; common depths are 20, 24, 28, 30, and 36 inches; fixed heights are 28.5, 29, or 30 inches. The matcher snaps your target up to the nearest stocked size on the standard desk sizes chart — for example a 52 × 26 inch target matches a 55 × 28 inch desk at 29 inches tall. Standing desks should adjust roughly 22–48 inches.
How long should desk cables be?
Estimate the longest run as the diagonal from the desk corner to the center, plus a 24-inch service loop. A 60 × 24 inch desk with two monitors needs about a 62.42-inch run, so the desk cable length calculator recommends standard 6-foot display cables and about 8 power outlets (devices × 1.5). Good desk cable management also means a cable tray when the PC sits on the floor. Runs past 72 inches step up to 10-foot cables.
Monitor arm vs stand — which should I choose?
Monitor arm vs stand comes down to depth: under 26 inches of desk depth, a monitor arm is recommended — it reclaims roughly 6 inches of depth and lets you hit the 20–26 inch viewing distance. At 26 inches or more, a regular stand works fine and costs less.
What desk size for gaming setup is recommended?
For a gaming setup, size like any multi-monitor desk size for PC setup: dual 27-inch monitors need 54–66 inches wide, triple 24-inch monitors need 96–108 inches, and a single 34-inch ultrawide needs 36–48 inches. Keep 24–30 inches of depth so the screens sit 20–26 inches from your eyes, and run the cable planner — two monitors on a 60 × 24 inch desk need 6-foot cables and 8 outlets.
Does this tool size the desk or the lamp on it?
This tool sizes the desk itself — width, depth, height, knee clearance, room fit, and cable plan. It does not size the lamp that sits on the desk: that is the job of our table lamp size calculator, which has a dedicated desk-lamp mode. Chair sizing is likewise separate — see the accent chair size calculator.
What about corner desk dimensions or L-shaped desks?
This tool sizes rectangular desks. For corner desk dimensions and L shaped desk dimensions, size each wing as its own rectangular desk: run the setup sizer for the equipment on each wing, then use the room fit planner to confirm both wings fit your corner with chair pull-out space. Allow the corner overlap where the two wings join rather than double-counting it.
