How countertop pricing works
A countertop quote has five line items. Understanding them is the difference between a $2,400 project and a $4,400 surprise:
Material — the slab or sheet itself, priced per square foot. Exotic granite and designer quartz cost 2–3x entry-level grades.
Fabrication — templating (laser-measuring your kitchen), cutting, polishing edges, and cutouts for sinks and cooktops.
Installation — delivery, setting, leveling, and seaming. Most fabricators bundle fabrication + installation into one per-sq-ft labor rate.
Edge profile — priced per linear foot. A simple eased edge is often included; an ogee profile can add $500+ to a kitchen.
Extras — sink cutouts ($100–$350 each), backsplash, and removal of the old countertop ($350+ flat is typical).
Rule of thumb: material is roughly 40–60% of the installed price. The rest is measuring, cutting, polishing, and setting — which is why the cheapest slab is rarely the cheapest project.

Worked example: 40 sq ft quartz kitchen, step by step
A typical galley kitchen has about 40 sq ft of countertop. Here is the full math at the calculator's default quartz rates:
Step 1 — Area: 40 sq ft (measure each run: length x depth in inches / 144, then add the runs). Step 2 — Material: 40 sq ft x $60/sq ft = $2,400. Step 3 — Fabrication + installation: 40 sq ft x $25/sq ft = $1,000. Step 4 — Subtotal: $2,400 + $1,000 = $3,400 (this is the 40 sq ft quartz anchor: $85 installed per sq ft). Step 5 — Edge: 18 linear ft of ogee edge x $28/ft = $504. Step 6 — Cutouts: 1 undermount sink x $150 = $150. Step 7 — Removal: old laminate tear-out = $350 flat. Total project: $3,400 + $504 + $150 + $350 = $4,404.
Same kitchen in granite at $60 installed per sq ft: 40 x $60 = $2,400 for material + installation — $1,000 less than quartz before edges. Add the same $504 edge, $150 cutout, and $350 removal and the granite project totals $3,404.
Disclaimer: these are US planning estimates for 2026. Real quotes vary by region, slab grade, fabricator, and site conditions (access, plumbing disconnects, rush scheduling). Always get 2–3 itemized quotes and compare them line by line.
What moves the price most
Slab grade. Entry-level granite ($50/sq ft) and exotic granite ($150+/sq ft) are the same stone — you pay for rarity of pattern and color.
Edge profile. Upgrading from eased to ogee on 18 linear feet adds $504. Waterfall island sides are priced per side.
Cutouts and seams. Each sink cutout is $100–$350; cooktop cutouts similar. More seams (small slabs, long runs) mean more labor.
Thickness. 3cm (1.25 in) is standard and included; 2cm needs plywood build-up and laminated edges cost extra.
Region. Northeast and West Coast metro areas run 15–25% above Southeast and Midwest pricing for the same material.
Removal. Tearing out tile or glued-down laminate adds a demolition line item many online estimates forget.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a quartz countertop cost per square foot?
Engineered quartz typically costs $75 to $150 per square foot installed, which covers material, fabrication, and installation. At a mid-range installed rate of $85 per square foot, a 40 sq ft kitchen costs 40 x $85 = $3,400 before edge upgrades or sink cutouts. Premium marble-look quartz can exceed $150 per square foot.
How much does a granite countertop cost?
Granite typically costs $50 to $100 per square foot installed. At a mid-range installed rate of $60 per square foot, a 40 sq ft kitchen costs 40 x $60 = $2,400. Entry-level granite colors start near $50 per square foot, while exotic slabs with heavy movement can exceed $150 per square foot.
How is countertop cost calculated?
Total cost = (area in sq ft x installed price per sq ft) + (edge linear feet x edge rate) + (sink cutouts x $150 each) + backsplash + removal of old countertops. The installed price per sq ft bundles material, fabrication, templating, and labor. For example, 40 sq ft of quartz: 40 x $85 = $3,400 for material and installation, then add edges and extras.
What is the cheapest countertop material?
Laminate is the cheapest at roughly $20 to $45 per square foot installed, followed by tile at $30 to $70. For a 40 sq ft kitchen, laminate runs about $800 to $1,800 installed versus $3,400 for mid-range quartz. Laminate costs less because it is a printed plastic layer over particleboard, so it cannot be refinished and is damaged by heat.
Quartz vs granite: which costs less?
Granite usually costs less upfront. Mid-range granite at $60 per square foot installed versus mid-range quartz at $85 means a 40 sq ft kitchen costs $2,400 in granite versus $3,400 in quartz. Quartz saves on maintenance though: granite needs resealing every 1 to 2 years, while quartz never needs sealing.
How many slabs do I need for my countertops?
A standard stone slab covers about 30 sq ft. Divide your total square footage by 30 and add 10 to 15 percent waste for cuts, then round up. For 40 sq ft with 10 percent waste: 40 x 1.10 / 30 = 1.47, so you need 2 slabs. Use the slab estimator tab above to calculate this automatically.
How much waste should I add to a countertop order?
Add 10 percent waste for simple straight runs and 15 to 20 percent for L-shaped kitchens, islands with waterfall edges, or heavy veining that must be matched across seams. Waste covers saw kerf, cutouts for sinks and cooktops, and unusable offcuts. Fabricators price the waste into the per-square-foot rate, but the slab tab above shows it explicitly.
What do edge profiles cost?
A standard eased edge is often included or costs about $5 per linear foot. Beveled edges run about $12, bullnose about $15, and ogee about $28 per linear foot. A waterfall edge is priced per side, roughly $150. For 18 linear feet of ogee edge: 18 x $28 = $504 added to the project.
Do sink cutouts cost extra?
Yes. Each sink or cooktop cutout typically adds $100 to $350 depending on the material and whether the sink is undermount. This calculator uses $150 per cutout as a planning figure. Undermount sinks cost more to cut and polish than drop-in sinks, and cutouts in brittle materials like marble carry a breakage risk that some fabricators price in.
How do I measure square footage for an L-shaped countertop?
Measure each straight run separately: length x depth in inches, divided by 144, gives square feet per run. Add the runs together and subtract the corner overlap counted twice. For a full walkthrough, use our square footage calculator at nrtechstudio.com/tools/square-calculator/ and bring the total here.
Why do countertop quotes vary so much between fabricators?
Slab grade, edge profile, sink cutouts, seam placement, templating method, and regional labor rates all move the number. Two quotes for the same 40 sq ft quartz kitchen can differ by $1,000 or more because one includes a premium edge and removal while the other does not. Always compare itemized quotes line by line, not just the bottom line.
