Field-tested agronomy math

Corn Yield Calculator

Estimate corn yield in bushels per acre by kernel count (the yield-component method) or by ear weight — with moisture correction to 15.5%, tonnes-per-hectare conversion, multi-site averaging, and every calculation step shown.

Estimate your corn yield

Two field-proven methods. Pick kernel count for pre-harvest estimates from the milk stage (R3) onward, or ear weight once the grain has reached black layer.

Typical: 28,000–34,000. Count only ears the combine header will retrieve.

Typical: 450–650. Average of several sampled ears.

90,000 is the classic rule of thumb at 15.5% moisture. Lower it after excellent grain fill (big kernels), raise it after stress (small kernels).

Result is standardized to 15.5% market moisture.

    Multi-site field average

One sample is a guess; five is an estimate. Add each sampling location, then average them for the whole field.

    Three examples, fully worked

    Example 1 — Whole field, 500 kernels/ear, 30,000 ears/acre

A field with 30,000 harvestable ears per acre averaging 500 kernels per ear, at the standard 90,000 kernels per bushel:

    30,000 ears × 500 kernels = 15,000,000 kernels/acre
    15,000,000 ÷ 90,000 = 166.7 bu/acre

    If the grain tests 20% moisture: 166.7 × (100 − 20) ÷ 84.5 = 157.8 bu/acre at 15.5% moisture — that is 10.46 t/ha (9,333 lb/acre).

    Example 2 — 1/1000-acre sample in 30″ rows

Cut a rope to 17′ 5″ (the 1/1000-acre length for 30″ rows) and count 27 ears. Sampled ears average 425 kernels each:

    27 ears × 1,000 = 27,000 ears/acre
    27,000 × 425 = 11,475,000 kernels/acre
    11,475,000 ÷ 90,000 = 127.5 bu/acre

    At 25% grain moisture: 127.5 × 75 ÷ 84.5 = 113.2 bu/acre standardized.

Example 3 — Ear-weight method after black layer

24 harvestable ears in the 17′ 5″ section, averaging 0.5 lb each, grain at 30% moisture:

    (24 × 0.5) ÷ (1.411 × 30 + 46.2) × 1,000
    = 12 ÷ 88.53 × 1,000 = 135.5 bu/acre

No further moisture correction — the denominator already standardizes the result to 15.5% moisture.

    The formulas, written out

    Yield-component (kernel-count) method

Developed at the University of Illinois and published by extension services across the Corn Belt:

    bu/acre = E × K ÷ B

    Moisture correction to market moisture

    bu15.5% = buM% × (100 − M) ÷ (100 − 15.5)

A legal bushel of shelled corn weighs 56 lb at 15.5% moisture, so every estimate is standardized to that moisture before it means anything.

Ear-weight method (Ohio State / Purdue)

    bu/acre = (E × W) ÷ (1.411 × M + 46.2) × 1,000

    Sampling geometry

row length (ft) = 43.56 ÷ row spacing (ft)

    One acre is 43,560 sq ft, so 1/1000 acre is 43.56 sq ft — a single row of that area. For 30″ rows (2.5 ft): 43.56 ÷ 2.5 = 17.42 ft = 17′ 5″.

Estimate, not a guarantee. Kernel weight is not final until the black layer (R6), so pre-harvest estimates are a ballpark — typically within 10–20% of the scale-ticket yield when sampled at 5+ sites. Use estimates for marketing and storage planning; the scale ticket settles the account.

How this compares to thin yield calculators

Most free “corn yield calculator” pages (including the well-known single-formula ones) give you one input box and one number. Here is what a field-ready tool needs instead:

    Typical thin calculator

    • Single formula, fixed 90,000 constant
    • No moisture correction
    • No 1/1000-acre sampling helper
    • Bushels per acre only — no t/ha
    • No worked examples or method notes
    • One sample = whole-field claim

    This calculator

    • Two methods: kernel count + ear weight
    • Adjustable fudge factor (70k–120k) for grain-fill conditions
    • Moisture correction to 15.5% with factor table
    • Sampling-length table for 7 row spacings + custom
    • bu/acre, t/ha, kg/ha, lb/acre side by side
    • Multi-site averaging with range
    • Show-your-work on every calculation
