How to convert TSV to CSV
Paste or upload. Paste tab-separated text above, or drag and drop a .tsv, .tab, or .txt file. A sample button is included if you want to try first.
Pick options. Choose the output delimiter (comma, semicolon, or pipe), quoting mode (automatic RFC 4180 or always-quote), and whether # comment lines should be skipped.
Copy or download. Conversion is live — read the preview table to verify columns, then copy the CSV or download it as a .csv file ready for Excel, Google Sheets, or database import.
Tip: unlike a naive find-and-replace of tabs with commas, this converter quotes fields that already contain commas, quotes, or line breaks, so columns never shift out of alignment.
Need JSON output instead? This tool converts TSV to CSV only. Try the CSV to JSON converter with the Tab delimiter for TSV to JSON.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a TSV file to CSV online for free?
Drop a .tsv, .tab, or .txt file onto the upload zone, or paste your tab-separated text into the input box. The tool converts live in your browser and shows a CSV preview table. Copy the result or download it as a .csv file. Nothing is uploaded to any server.
What is a TSV file and how is it different from CSV?
TSV (tab-separated values) separates each field with a tab character, while CSV uses commas. TSV is safer when your data itself contains commas, because a CSV parser would misread an unquoted comma as a new column. Converting TSV to CSV re-encodes the same table with commas and RFC 4180 quoting so every field stays intact.
Does the converter escape commas and quotes inside my data?
Yes. The output follows RFC 4180: any field containing the output delimiter, a double quote, or a line break is wrapped in double quotes, and embedded quotes are doubled. A field like Acme, Inc. becomes "Acme, Inc.". A quoted TSV field holding an embedded tab or newline keeps that content inside its CSV field.
Can I open the converted CSV in Excel or Google Sheets?
Yes. Download the .csv file, then open it in Excel via File, Open, or import it in Google Sheets via File, Import. Because the output is RFC 4180 compliant, commas inside quoted fields will not split into extra columns. This makes the tool a handy TSV to Excel step when a system only accepts CSV.
My TSV has comment lines and blank rows. Will they break the conversion?
No. Blank lines are skipped automatically, and there is an option to skip lines starting with #. Rows with fewer fields than the widest row keep their empty cells, and extra fields are preserved, so no data is silently dropped. An unterminated quoted field is flagged with its exact 1-based line number.
Is my data uploaded or stored anywhere?
No. This is a 100 percent client-side TSV to CSV converter: parsing, the preview table, and file download all run in your browser with JavaScript. Your data never leaves your device, and closing the tab clears it.
Can I output semicolon-separated CSV instead of comma-separated?
Yes. Pick comma, semicolon, or pipe as the output delimiter, and choose automatic RFC 4180 quoting or always-quote. The semicolon option is useful for European spreadsheet locales that expect semicolon-delimited CSV. Note this tool converts one way only, from TSV to CSV; for TSV to JSON output, use the sibling CSV to JSON converter in tab mode.
