Methodology: how the Catculator computes cat age
There is no exact biological exchange rate between cat and human aging — cats mature explosively in year one, then settle into a steadier pace. The formula below is the convention behind the AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines and the six-stage scheme of International Cat Care: it is the most widely cited comparison in veterinary literature, and every number on this page derives from it.
Kitten curve: 0–6 mo ×20 · 6–12 mo ×10 (so 6 months ≈ 10 human years)
The six feline life stages
Kitten (birth–6 months), Junior (6 months–2 years), Prime (3–6 years), Mature (7–10 years), Senior (11–14 years), Geriatric (15+ years). Note the AAHA/AAFP 2021 guidelines group these into four clinical stages (kitten, young adult, mature adult, senior); the six-stage split above is the International Cat Care scheme, which gives finer granularity for everyday use.
Why “multiply by 7” is wrong
The old ×7 rule claims a 1-year-old cat equals a 7-year-old child. In reality a 1-year-old cat is developmentally closer to a 15-year-old teenager, and a 2-year-old cat resembles a human in their mid-twenties. The ×7 shortcut only lands near the truth for middle-aged cats and breaks down for kittens and seniors — which is exactly where accurate conversion matters most.
Limitations
This is a population-level estimate. Breed, genetics, body condition, diet, indoor vs outdoor lifestyle, and veterinary care all shift an individual cat’s biological age. Treat the result as an educational comparison, not a diagnosis — your veterinarian’s physical exam (teeth, eyes, muscle tone) remains the best individual age estimate.
What this Catculator is (and isn’t)
It is the cat-age Catculator: cat years ↔ human years, life stages, and birthday countdown — with every step of the math shown.
It isn’t a cat-skinned arithmetic calculator (several hobby projects share the “Catculator” name for cute math apps — fun, but a different thing entirely). It also doesn’t compute food portions or calories: for daily feeding amounts see our companion pet food calculator (RER/MER-based portions for cats and dogs).
Frequently asked questions
How do you convert cat years to human years?
The widely used rule is: the first cat year equals about 15 human years, the second year adds 9 more (24 total), and each year after that adds about 4 human years. So a 5-year-old cat is roughly 36 in human years (24 + 3 × 4). This calculator applies the same rule with month-level precision, so kittens and fractional ages convert smoothly too.
How old is a 1-year-old cat in human years?
A 1-year-old cat is about 15 human years old. Cats mature extremely fast in their first year — reaching near-adult size and sexual maturity — which is why the first year counts for so much more than later years.
How old is a 2-year-old cat in human years?
A 2-year-old cat is about 24 human years old: 15 for the first year plus 9 for the second. Think of a 2-year-old cat as a young adult human in their mid-twenties — fully grown and in the junior life stage.
How many human years is a 10-year-old cat?
A 10-year-old cat is about 56 human years old (24 for the first two years, plus 8 × 4 for the rest). At 10, a cat is in the mature life stage — comparable to a human in their mid-fifties — and may start slowing down slightly.
How do you convert kitten months to human years?
Kittens grow fastest of all, so the calculator uses a steeper curve for the first year: roughly 20 human years per cat year for the first 6 months, then 10 per year for months 6–12. That makes a 6-month-old kitten about 10 human years and a 3-month-old kitten about 5.
Why is the “multiply by 7” rule wrong for cats?
Because cats don't age at a constant rate. The ×7 rule says a 1-year-old cat equals a 7-year-old child, but a 1-year-old cat is actually developmentally closer to a 15-year-old teenager. The ×7 shortcut only lands near the truth for middle-aged cats (a 5-year-old cat ≈ 35–36 either way) and breaks down badly for kittens and seniors.
How do I convert human years back to cat years?
Use the reverse mode of this calculator: it inverts the same curve. Roughly, divide human years up to 10 by 20 (so 10 human years ≈ a 6-month-old kitten), map 10–15 to the second half of year one, 15–24 to year two, and subtract 4 human years per cat year after that. For example, 36 human years converts back to a 5-year-old cat.
What are the life stages of a cat?
Following the International Cat Care six-stage scheme: Kitten (birth–6 months), Junior (6 months–2 years), Prime (3–6 years), Mature (7–10 years), Senior (11–14 years), and Geriatric (15+ years). Each stage has different nutrition, play, and veterinary needs, which this calculator shows alongside your result.
When is a cat considered a senior?
A cat is generally considered senior from 11 years old (about 60 human years), and geriatric from 15 (about 76 human years). Senior cats benefit from vet check-ups every 6 months, senior-formula food, joint support, and easy access to warm resting spots.
Do breed, size, or lifestyle change how fast a cat ages?
Yes, somewhat. Indoor cats typically live 12–18 years while outdoor cats average far less due to hazards, and good nutrition, weight control, and veterinary care all shift the curve. The 15/9/+4 formula is a population-level estimate — an individual cat's biological age can run a little ahead or behind it.
How accurate is a cat age calculator?
It is an educational estimate, not a medical measurement — there is no exact biological exchange rate between cat and human aging. The formula used here is the convention behind AAHA/AAFP feline life-stage guidelines and is consistent across veterinary sources, so it is the best available comparison, but always treat it as approximate.
Does this Catculator also calculate cat food or calories?
No — this tool is strictly the cat-age converter (cat years ↔ human years, life stages, and birthday countdown). For daily food amounts and calorie targets, see our companion tool, the pet food calculator, which computes RER/MER feeding portions for cats and dogs.
Is this the same “Catculator” as the cat-themed math calculators?
No. Several hobby projects also use the name “Catculator” for cute cat-skinned arithmetic calculators. This page is the cat-age Catculator: it converts between cat years and human years, shows life stages, and counts down to your cat's next birthday.
What is the oldest cat ever recorded?
The oldest cat on record is widely reported as Creme Puff, who lived to 38 years and 3 days — about 168 in human years on this scale. Well cared-for indoor cats routinely reaching their late teens and early twenties is increasingly common.
