4. Frequently asked questions

How do I convert English words to a number?

Type or paste English number words into the converter box and the digits appear instantly. For example, two thousand three hundred forty-five becomes 2,345. The parser understands ones, teens and tens, the scales hundred, thousand, million, billion and trillion, plus hyphens and the optional word and, as in one hundred and five.

How do I convert the words two thousand three hundred forty-five to digits?

Enter the words exactly as written and the converter returns 2,345. It splits the phrase into number words and scale words, so two thousand becomes 2,000 and three hundred forty-five becomes 345, which are added together for the total 2,345.

Can this converter read decimal words like three point one four?

Yes. The word point marks the decimal separator and every word after it must be a single digit from zero to nine, read one by one. Three point one four becomes 3.14, and one hundred point five becomes 100.5. The words oh and o also count as zero after point, so three point oh five is 3.05.

How do I convert negative number words such as negative twelve?

Start the phrase with negative or minus. Negative twelve becomes -12 and minus three point one four becomes -3.14. Anything else in the phrase follows the normal rules for ones, tens, scales and decimals.

Does the converter understand and and hyphens?

Yes. The word and is optional and is simply skipped, so one hundred and five and one hundred five both become 105. Hyphenated numbers work with or without the hyphen: forty-two and forty two both become 42. Input is case-insensitive and extra spaces do not matter.

Which English number words are supported?

All of zero through nineteen, the tens twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty and ninety, and the scale words hundred, thousand, million, billion and trillion. Special words are point for decimals, negative or minus for negative numbers, and and as an optional filler. Numbers up to 999 trillion are supported.

What happens when I type a word the converter does not know?

You get a clear error that names the unknown word and its position, for example word “banana” at position 1. Invalid word order is rejected too: thousand hundred fails because hundred has no number before it, and one thousand thousand fails because scales must get smaller from left to right.

Does this words to number converter work for languages other than English?

No. The converter only understands English number words. Phrases in other languages, even close relatives like German or French number words, are rejected as unknown words. This is deliberate: number word grammar differs between languages, so guessing would produce wrong results.

I need the opposite direction, digits to words. Is there a tool for that?

Yes, but it is a separate tool with the opposite purpose. This page converts words to digits only, for example two thousand becomes 2,000. If you want to spell a number out, for example 1,234 becomes one thousand two hundred thirty-four, use our digits to words converter instead.
