Car Seat Expiration Checker

Do car seats expire? Yes — every child car seat has a manufacturer-set useful life, typically 6 to 10 years from the date of manufacture. Enter your seat's brand and manufacture date below to get its expiration date, the time remaining, and a clear safety verdict. No account, no tracking — everything runs in your browser.

From your manual or the table tab. Defaults to the brand's common value.
On the white DOM label: bottom, back, or side of the seat.
Leave blank to use today. Useful for planning ahead.

Worked example: Graco seat made in January 2020

  1. Read the DOM label. The white sticker on the back of the seat says Date of Manufacture: January 2020.
  2. Find the brand lifespan. Graco seats last 10 years from manufacture unless the label says otherwise (most Graco infant seats: 7 years). We use 10 years.
  3. Add the lifespan to the manufacture month.
    Expiration = January 2020 + 10 years = January 2030
  4. Count the remaining months from the check date (October 2026).
    Remaining = (2030 − 2026) × 12 + (1 − 10) = 48 − 9 = 39 months = 3 years 3 months
  5. Apply the status rule. The seat is expired when remaining < 0, and "expiring soon" when 0–5 months remain. 39 months ≥ 6, so the status is VALID with 3 years 3 months to go.

Two more quick examples (checked as of October 2026)

Example B — expired seat. Evenflo convertible, manufactured March 2019, 6-year lifespan → expires March 2025. Remaining = (2025 − 2026) × 12 + (3 − 10) = −12 − 7 = −19 months. Status: EXPIRED — 1 year 7 months overdue. Replace immediately and destroy the old seat.

Example C — valid seat. Chicco seat, manufactured June 2021, 8-year lifespan (the conservative default for an unknown Chicco seat type) → expires June 2029. Remaining = (2029 − 2026) × 12 + (6 − 10) = 36 − 4 = 32 months. Status: VALID — 2 years 8 months to go.

Why do car seats expire?

Expiration dates exist for engineering reasons, not to sell more seats:

  • Plastic degrades. Heat, cold, sunlight, and humidity make the shell brittle over years of daily use — including time parked in a hot car.
  • Metal fatigues and rusts. Buckles, anchors, and internal hardware can corrode in places you cannot see.
  • Webbing and foam wear out. Harness straps are washed, twisted, and tensioned thousands of times; energy-absorbing foam compresses.
  • Parts disappear. Once a model is discontinued, replacement parts stop being manufactured.
  • Standards move forward. Crash-test knowledge and best-practice recommendations improve every few years; expiration guarantees your seat is not decades behind.
  • Recalls get missed. An expiration date bounds how long an unregistered, possibly recalled seat can stay in service.
