6How the picker works

Database. 147 board games curated from public sources, including BoardGameGeek's public game statistics (player counts, playing times, community complexity ratings, minimum ages) and publisher listings, cross-checked against retailers and Wikipedia. Weights are BGG community complexity ratings (1 = very light, 5 = extremely heavy), approximate as of October 2026. This tool is not affiliated with or endorsed by BoardGameGeek.

Ranking. Your answers become filters (player count must fit, playing time must fit your window, complexity within your appetite). Matching games are then scored: games that shine at your exact player count get the biggest boost, followed by time fit and vibe match, with small bonuses for kid-friendly, beginner-easy, or veteran-crunchy picks depending on your group. Ties break toward lighter games, then alphabetically — fully deterministic.

Random. "Surprise me" uses your browser's cryptographic random generator over the current filter matches; every matching game has an equal chance.

🔒 Privacy: this tool is 100% client-side. The game database is bundled in this page — there is no account, no sign-up, no server, and your quiz answers never leave your browser.

7Frequently asked questions

What board game should we play tonight?

Take the 60-second quiz above: tell us how many players you have, how much time you've got, how complex you like your games, and what vibe you're after. The picker scores all 147 games in its database against your answers and shows the top matches with a short explanation of why each one fits. Prefer control? Use the manual filters instead — or hit "Surprise me" and let chance decide.

What are good board games for beginners?

Beginner-friendly gateway games: Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, Catan, Azul, Splendor, Kingdomino, Pandemic, Love Letter, Sushi Go!, Qwixx, King of Tokyo, and Dixit. In the quiz, choose the "Beginners" group — the picker caps complexity at light games and boosts the easiest-to-teach titles to the top of your results.

How does the board game picker quiz work?

The quiz asks five questions — player count, available time, complexity, vibe, and group experience — and converts your answers into filters applied to a curated database of 147 board games. Matching games are then scored: games that shine at your exact player count, use your available time well, and match your vibe rank higher. Every recommendation shows its reasons, so you can see exactly why it was picked.

What does board game "weight" or complexity mean?

Weight is the BoardGameGeek community's 1-to-5 complexity rating: how hard a game is to learn and how deep its decisions run. Very light (1.0–1.6) means party and kids' games; light (up to 2.2) means easy gateway games; medium (up to 3.4) means satisfying strategy; heavy (3.8+) means long, crunchy epics like Gloomhaven or Lisboa. The picker's complexity filter uses these ratings to match games to your appetite.

Where does the game data come from? Is this affiliated with BoardGameGeek?

The 147-game database was curated from public sources, including BoardGameGeek's public game statistics (player counts, playing times, community complexity ratings, and minimum ages) and publisher listings, and cross-checked against multiple retailers and Wikipedia. Weights are approximate community ratings as of October 2026. This tool is not affiliated with or endorsed by BoardGameGeek.

Is my data private? Do I need an account?

Yes — the picker is 100% client-side. There is no account, no sign-up, and no server: the entire game database lives inside this page, and your quiz answers never leave your browser. No tracking, no cookies for the tool itself, nothing is uploaded anywhere.

How does "Surprise me" work? Is it really random?

"Surprise me" picks uniformly at random from the games currently matching your filters, using your browser's cryptographic random number generator — every matching game has an equal chance. If no filters are set, it draws from all 147 games. Set filters first (for example, 4 players and under an hour) to get a surprise that still fits your evening.

Why was a particular game recommended to me?

Each recommendation lists its reasons: for example, a game may shine brightest at your exact player count, fit neatly into your available time, match your chosen vibe (party, strategy, cooperative, and so on), or be an especially easy teach for beginners. The score behind the ranking rewards exact player-count fit most, then time fit and vibe match.

Can I use this picker for kids? What ages are covered?

Yes. Choose the "Kids" group in the quiz and the picker only shows games rated ages 8 and under, boosting titles designed for young players like Rhino Hero, Outfoxed!, Hoot Owl Hoot!, and Dragomino. Every game in the database lists its publisher-recommended minimum age, shown on each result card.
