Bike Speed Calculator
Convert cycling speed ↔ pace, get average speed from distance & time, and estimate ride time. Metric & imperial, no signup, nothing leaves your browser.
How it works
Four formulas, nothing more — pace and speed are exact inverses of each other:
speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace (min/km)
speed (km/h) = distance (km) ÷ time (h)
time (h) = distance (km) ÷ speed (km/h)
What this tool is (and isn’t)
Is: a pure speed ↔ pace ↔ time calculator for cycling (and running, swimming — the math is identical).
Isn’t: a drivetrain calculator. It never asks for cadence, chainrings, or cogs — converting cadence + gearing into speed is a separate calculation with different inputs (see our bike-cadence-and-speed-calculator).
FAQ
How do I convert bike speed to pace?
Divide 60 by your speed in km/h. Riding at 30 km/h gives 60 ÷ 30 = 2 minutes per km — a pace of 2:00/km, or 3:13.1 per mile. The Speed → Pace tab above does this instantly.
What is the formula for cycling pace?
pace (min/km) = 60 ÷ speed (km/h), and pace (min/mi) = 60 ÷ speed (mph). Pace and speed are exact inverses: double the speed and the pace halves.
How do I calculate average speed from distance and time?
speed = distance ÷ time. Example: 40 km ridden in 1 hour 20 minutes (1.333 h) gives 40 ÷ 1.333 = 30 km/h. Enter any distance and time in the Distance + Time tab.
How do I convert pace to speed?
speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace (min/km). A pace of 2:30 per km (2.5 min) gives 60 ÷ 2.5 = 24 km/h (14.91 mph).
How long will my ride take?
time = distance ÷ speed. Riding 25 km at 27.5 km/h takes 25 ÷ 27.5 = 0.909 h, i.e. 0:54:33. The Distance + Speed tab computes this for any ride.
What is the difference between pace and speed?
They are the same information, inverted. Speed is distance per unit of time (km/h); pace is time per unit of distance (min/km). Cyclists usually talk speed, runners usually talk pace — this tool shows both side by side.
How do I convert km/h to mph?
Multiply by 0.621371 (1 mph = 1.609344 km/h exactly). 30 km/h = 18.64 mph, and 100 km in 3 hours = 33.33 km/h = 20.71 mph.
Can I use this calculator for running?
Yes — the math is identical. Pace and speed work the same way for running, cycling, or swimming; only the typical numbers differ.
Why is my average speed lower than my cruising speed?
Average speed includes every stop, climb, headwind, and traffic light. Cruising at 32 km/h but averaging 27 usually means stops and hills, not a math error.
What is a good average cycling speed?
Rough orientation only: casual 15–20 km/h, regular commuter 20–25 km/h, fit club rider 28–35 km/h. Wind, hills, and bike type move these numbers a lot.
Does this tool use cadence or gears?
No. This calculator uses only speed, pace, distance, and time — no cadence or gear inputs needed. Turning cadence plus gearing into speed is a separate drivetrain calculation with different inputs.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. Everything runs 100% in your browser; your inputs never leave your device.
