How much does each appliance really cost to run? Pick from a 60+ appliance wattage database, build your whole home's electricity bill, find vampire (standby) loads, compare LED savings, read your meter, and define your own tiered tariff — all in one tool.

This appliance energy calculator answers: how much electricity does my appliance use, what is the electricity consumption and cost per appliance per month, how to calculate kWh of an appliance, how to estimate an electricity bill by appliance or from a meter reading, how much vampire/standby power costs, and how much you save switching incandescent, CFL or fluorescent bulbs to LED.
🧾 Multi-Appliance Bill Builder
Add every appliance you own. The builder totals kWh per month, cost per day/month/year, and ranks what eats the most electricity in your home.
Add appliances above to see your total.
⚡ Quick kWh & Cost Calculator
Single appliance: kWh = watts × hours ÷ 1000, then cost = kWh × your rate.
🧛 Vampire / Standby Power Calculator
Many devices keep drawing 1–30 W when "off" — TVs, set-top boxes, game consoles, microwaves (clock), chargers. The U.S. DOE notes these phantom loads raise an appliance's energy use 24/7, and unplugging or a switched power strip eliminates them.
Add standby devices above.
💡 LED vs Incandescent Savings Calculator
Swap old bulbs for LEDs: LEDs use ~75% less energy than incandescent for the same brightness (DOE). Works for incandescent → LED, CFL → LED, and fluorescent tube → LED retrofits.
📟 Electricity Bill from Meter Reading
Read the dials/numbers on your electricity meter at the start and end of a period — subtract to get kWh used.
🧱 Tariff / Slab (Tiered Rate) Builder
Utility rates differ by country and change often — so no tariffs are hardcoded. Define your own blocks: e.g. 0–100 kWh @ your first rate, 101–200 @ the next, everything above @ the last. Then tick "Use my custom tiered tariff" in the Bill Builder tab and this tariff prices the total.
📚 How it works & data sources
Formula: kWh = watts × hours ÷ 1000. Cost = kWh × rate. Monthly totals use your days-per-month per appliance; cost/day and cost/year scale from the monthly figure.
Appliance wattages are typical running watts verified against the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Estimating Appliance and Home Electronic Energy Use factsheet (via Virginia Cooperative Extension / Penn State EGEE 102 course data): e.g. coffee maker 900–1200 W, clothes dryer 1800–5000 W, dishwasher 1200–2400 W, microwave 750–1100 W, refrigerator (frost-free) 725 W nameplate, water heater 4500–5500 W, vacuum 1000–1440 W, toaster 800–1400 W, hair dryer 1200–1875 W, portable heater 750–1500 W, clothes iron 1000–1800 W, ceiling fan 65–175 W, laptop 50 W, dehumidifier 785 W.
Modern/electronics values follow DOE and EPA ENERGY STAR product guidance: LED/LCD TV ~50–150 W by size, desktop PC ~120 W active / ≤30 W asleep, game consoles ~15–200 W by generation and mode.
LED equivalences: 60 W incandescent ≈ 9 W LED (800 lm), 75 W ≈ 12 W (1100 lm), 100 W ≈ 15 W (1600 lm) — LED uses ~75% less energy (DOE).
Standby (phantom) loads: typical values — TV 0.5–3 W, set-top/cable box 5–25 W, game console 0.5–15 W (rest mode higher), microwave clock 2–3 W, printer 1–3 W, phone charger idle 0.1–0.5 W, desktop off/sleep 1–3 W.
CO₂ estimate uses 0.475 kg CO₂ per kWh (IEA global average electricity emissions intensity, approximate — your grid mix varies).
Estimates, not exact: compressors cycle (fridges/ACs don't draw rated watts continuously), dryers/heaters cycle with thermostats, and nameplate watts are a ceiling for circuit sizing — not average draw. Treat results as planning estimates.
