Frequently asked questions

How do I add times together?
Enter each duration as hours, minutes and seconds in its own row, then press Calculate. For example, 2:30 plus 1:45 gives 4:15. Use the minus sign on a row to subtract it, e.g. 7:30 plus 0:45 minus 1:00 gives 7:15.
What is 4:15 in decimal hours?
4:15 is 4.25 decimal hours. Divide the minutes by 60: 15 / 60 = 0.25, so 4 + 0.25 = 4.25 hours. Payroll systems use this format, e.g. 7.25 hours means 7 hours 15 minutes.
How do I convert decimal hours to hours and minutes?
Multiply the decimal part by 60. For 7.25 hours: 0.25 x 60 = 15 minutes, so 7.25 hours = 7:15. The converter above does this instantly.
Can I subtract times as well as add them?
Yes. Each row has a plus/minus switch. A common use is subtracting unpaid breaks from a workday: 7:30 worked plus 0:45 overtime minus 1:00 lunch break equals 7:15 payable.
How is this different from a clock time calculator?
This tool adds durations (lengths of time), not clock times or time zones. 2:30 here means 2 hours 30 minutes of elapsed time, not 2:30 AM. It never wraps at midnight.
How do I add up a weekly timesheet?
Put each day's hours on its own row (e.g. Mon 8:00, Tue 7:30, Wed 8:15, Thu 8:00, Fri 7:45) and add them. The total shows in H:MM:SS plus decimal hours, which is what most payroll software expects.
What does the average tell me?
The average is the total divided by the number of rows. If you add 2:30 and 1:45, the average is 2:07:30, i.e. 2.125 hours per entry. Useful for average task time or average daily hours.
What happens if the result is negative?
Negative results are shown with a leading minus sign. For example, 1:00 minus 2:00 gives -1:00:00, which is -1.0 decimal hours. This can happen when breaks exceed worked time.
Can totals exceed 24 hours?
Yes. Totals are plain durations with no 24-hour limit. Adding 38:30:00 and 39:15:45 gives 77:45:45, ideal for multi-week timesheets or project totals.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. All calculations run in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded, stored or tracked, so it is safe for payroll and timesheet data.
