Well Drilling Cost Lab

Drilling a well is priced by the foot — and geology decides the price of every foot. This lab combines a 50-state drilling $/ft database with depth-to-water estimates, rock-condition multipliers, a full system breakdown, a well-vs-city-water break-even calculator, pump sizing, and maintenance planning. Pick your state and drill into the numbers.

⚠ Estimates only — not quotes. Well costs vary by driller, geology, and county. Figures below are typical published ranges (see Methodology). Always get at least 3 quotes from licensed local well drillers, and have your water tested by a lab — the EPA recommends testing private well water at least once a year.

Drilling Cost Calculator

Pick your state, expected depth, ground conditions, and well diameter. The lab multiplies depth × your state's published $/ft range × the rock-condition multiplier — the same math drillers quote by.

Drilling only — the borehole. Casing, pump, pressure tank, wiring, treatment, testing, and permit are separate (see Full System tab). Drillers charge for every foot drilled even if they do not find water.

Depth-to-Water Estimator

Depth drives the bill, and geology decides the depth. Pick the region that matches your ground to see the typical well depth range — then feed it into the drilling calculator.

Local truth beats regional averages. Ask nearby well owners or your county's well-completion reports for the real depth to water on your street — it can differ by hundreds of feet from the regional range.

Full System Cost Breakdown

A working well is more than a hole: drilling + casing + pump + pressure tank + wiring + treatment + testing + permit. Itemized below with published component ranges.

Well vs City Water

The real decision: pay a well's upfront cost and own free water, or pay the city's hookup fee plus a monthly bill forever. Enter your numbers for the break-even.

Use your Full System result above.
Typically $2,000–$10,000.
US municipal: $20–$40/mo for 12k–24k gal.
Electricity ≈ $3/mo; maintenance is in the 25-yr view.

Pump Sizing Helper

Pump horsepower follows total dynamic head (lift + pressure); flow follows household size. Get both, plus the matching pump type and installed cost range.

How deep the pump hangs — often 10–20 ft above the well bottom.
Each psi ≈ 2.31 ft of head the pump must overcome.
Sizes the flow rate (GPM) the household needs.

Maintenance Schedule & Cost

A well lasts up to 40 years with maintenance. Plan the annual routine, pump replacements, and the 25-year total cost of ownership.

EPA: test private wells at least yearly.
Submersibles: 10–15 yrs; tanks: 10–15 yrs.
EPA water-testing note: test your well water at least once a year for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH — plus any contaminants common in your area (arsenic, radon, lead, pesticides). Test immediately if anyone is pregnant or nursing, or after any flooding or well repair.

Methodology & data vintage

State $/ft database (50 states + DC): drilling cost-per-foot ranges from the California Central Valley Flood Protection Board EIS attachment "Well Drilling Costs" (public document hosted on ca.gov, Nov 2020). The same ranges are widely echoed by national cost guides 2021–2026 (Angi, HomeGuide, homeyou city pages), which is why we treat them as the best available national compilation; re-verified via web search Oct 2026.

Rock multipliers: same document — Easy −34%, Moderate −16.22%, Partial rock +92.34%, Dense rock +155.38% (applied to drilling cost only). Component costs: same document — drilling only $15–$25/ft; complete system $25–$65/ft; pumps $300–$2,000 (jet $300–$900, convertible $400–$1,200, submersible $400–$2,000); casing PVC $6–$10/ft, galvanized steel $33–$54/ft, stainless $57–$129/ft; pressure tank $300–$2,500; wiring $500–$1,500; treatment $500–$3,000; lab testing $50–$650; permits $350–$700.

Well vs city: break-even = (well capex − hookup fee) ÷ (monthly bill − well monthly operating cost); 25-year view adds well electricity (~$3/mo) + basic maintenance (~$150/yr) against the monthly bill. Municipal figures: $20–$40/mo for 12,000–24,000 gallons; well electricity ~$3/mo; family savings $250–$500/yr after payoff (same source).

Pump sizing: total dynamic head = pump set depth + pressure × 2.31 ft/psi; HP bands ½ (≤150 ft), ¾ (≤230), 1 (≤320), 1½ (≤450), 2 (≤600) — standard industry rule of thumb, confirm with a pump professional. Flow by bedrooms: 1–2 BR ≈ 7 GPM, 3 BR ≈ 10, 4 BR ≈ 12, 5+ ≈ 15. Depth regions: generalized from state well-driller guides — local data wins.

What this is not: not a quote, not a recommendation to drill, and not water-quality advice. Geology varies lot to lot. Test your water annually (EPA) and get 3 licensed local quotes.
