AISLE 01 · BREAK-EVEN

How much do you need to spend to break even?

Enter your estimated yearly spending at the club and your savings rate versus a regular supermarket. The math is simple: break-even = membership fee ÷ (savings rate + reward rate).

Everything you’d buy there in 12 months — groceries, gas, pharmacy, household.
10%
Conservative default: 10%. Warehouse prices typically run 10–20% below supermarkets on comparable items.

AISLE 02 · EXECUTIVE / PLUS

Is the premium tier worth it for you?

Costco Executive, Sam’s Club Plus, and BJ’s Perks Rewards all pay a 2% annual reward — but charge a higher fee. Enter your yearly club spending to see which tier wins and exactly where the upgrade breaks even.

Upgrade break-even

The famous $3,250 rule: Costco’s $65 upgrade fee divided by the 2% reward rate = $3,250/year. Spend more than that and Executive beats Gold Star — the calculator above proves it with your own numbers.
AISLE 03 · ITEM BY ITEM

Compare your real prices, item by item

The most honest answer uses your prices. List the things you buy regularly with the club’s per-unit price, your supermarket’s per-unit price, and how many you buy per year. Example rows are pre-filled — edit them.

Methodology — the math, shown

Every number on this page comes from three formulas. No black boxes.

net = spend × savingsRate + min(spend × rewardRate, cap) − fee
breakEven = fee ÷ (savingsRate + rewardRate)  ·  upgrade = Δfee ÷ Δrate

Worked examples

Example 1 — Gold Star break-even. $65 fee, 10% savings rate, no reward: $65 ÷ 0.10 = $650/year ≈ $54.17/month. Spend more than that monthly and the membership pays for itself.
Example 2 — the $3,250 Executive rule. The upgrade costs $65 more per year and pays 2%: $65 ÷ 0.02 = $3,250/year. Above that spending, Executive beats Gold Star — every time, by construction.
Example 3 — family of four, Executive. $450/month = $5,400/year. Discount: $540. Reward: $108. $540 + $108 − $130 = $518/year net (Gold Star would net $475).
Example 4 — gas only, Gold Star. 600 gallons × $0.25 cheaper = $150 − $65 fee = $85/year net, without buying a single grocery.

Frequently asked questions

How much do I need to spend at Costco to make a membership worth it?

Divide the membership fee by your effective savings rate. A $65 Gold Star membership at a 10% savings rate breaks even at $650 per year — about $54 per month. A $130 Executive membership breaks even at about $1,083 per year at the same rate, because the 2% reward also counts. Move the savings-rate slider in the Break-even tab to match your own prices.

Is a Costco membership worth it for a single person?

It can be. A single person spending $150 per month at Costco saves roughly $180 per year at a 10% savings rate, which is $115 net after the $65 Gold Star fee. Gas, pharmacy, and non-perishable Kirkland staples help singles clear the bar; skip bulk perishables you cannot finish before they spoil.

Is Costco worth it just for gas?

Often yes. If Costco gas is $0.25 cheaper per gallon and you buy 600 gallons a year, that is $150 in savings minus the $65 membership fee — $85 net, before you buy a single grocery. Use the Gas tab with your local per-gallon price difference to check your own numbers.

How much do you need to spend to make Costco Executive worth it?

Two numbers matter. Upgrading from Gold Star to Executive costs $65 more per year, and the 2% reward covers that at $3,250 per year in eligible spending ($65 ÷ 0.02). As a standalone membership, Executive breaks even at about $1,083 per year at a 10% savings rate. The 2% annual reward is capped at $1,250.

What are the perks of a Costco Executive membership?

The main perk is a 2% annual reward on eligible Costco purchases, capped at $1,250 per year. The fee is $130 per year versus $65 for Gold Star. The Tier optimizer tab compares both tiers side by side for your exact spending and tells you which one wins.

Is a Sam's Club membership worth it?

A $50 Club membership breaks even at $500 per year in club spending at a 10% savings rate — about $42 per month. The $110 Plus membership adds a 2% reward (Sam's Cash, capped at $500 per year); the upgrade pays for itself at $3,000 per year in spending ($60 extra fee ÷ 0.02).

Sam's Club vs Costco — which is cheaper?

On fees alone, Sam's Club is cheaper: $50 versus $65 for the base tier, and $110 versus $130 for the premium tier. But the cheaper fee does not automatically mean bigger savings — your actual savings depend on your spending and the per-unit prices you pay. Switch clubs in the picker above and compare your own totals.

Does a Costco membership pay for itself?

It pays for itself when your yearly savings beat the fee: (club spending × savings rate) + annual reward − membership fee > $0. The calculator shows this as a verdict badge — green when the membership earns its keep, red when it does not — for every tier and every tab.

What Costco membership should I get?

A simple rule: if you spend under about $3,250 per year at Costco, Gold Star ($65) usually wins; above that, Executive ($130) usually wins because the 2% reward covers the extra $65 fee. Enter your real annual spending in the Tier optimizer tab for an exact recommendation instead of a rule of thumb.

Is Costco worth it for a family of 4?

Very often. At $450 per month in club spending and a 10% savings rate, a family of four nets about $475 per year on Gold Star and about $518 per year on Executive — so Executive is the better pick at that spending level. The 5-year tab shows the full projection, including gas savings.

How much does the average person spend at Costco?

There is no single honest number — it varies enormously by household. The calculator's presets use $150 per month for a single person, $275 for a couple, and $450 for a family of four purely as planning defaults. Replace them with your own monthly spending for a result you can trust.

Is BJ's Wholesale Club worth it?

A $55 Inner Circle membership breaks even at $550 per year at a 10% savings rate. The $110 Perks Rewards tier adds a 2% reward; the upgrade breaks even at $2,750 per year in spending ($55 extra fee ÷ 0.02). No published annual reward cap was found for BJ's — check their current terms.

Do the 2% rewards expire, and are they capped?

Caps are published and binding: Costco Executive's 2% annual reward is capped at $1,250 per year, and Sam's Club Plus's 2% Sam's Cash is capped at $500 per year. Rewards are issued on the club's own schedule and terms, which change — verify the current terms before relying on them. The calculator applies these caps automatically.

How accurate is the 10% savings assumption?

It is a deliberately conservative default. Warehouse clubs commonly price comparable items 10–20% below regular supermarkets, but the real number varies by item and by store. Treat the slider as your estimate, and use the Price compare tab with your own per-unit prices for the most honest answer.

Does gas count toward the 2% Executive or Plus reward?

Generally yes for Costco gas under the Executive 2% annual reward, and the Gas tab includes the reward on your gas spending when you select a premium tier. Club terms differ and change, so confirm with your club if gas rewards are central to your decision.
