Volume to Density Calculator

Solve density, mass, or volume with ρ = m/V — in any mix of metric and imperial units. Also compute volume from box, cylinder, or sphere dimensions, look up 30 common materials, blend two materials, and get specific gravity. Everything runs in your browser.

3-way solver: density, mass, volume

ρ = m / V  ·  m = ρ × V  ·  V = m / ρ  ·  SG = ρ / 1000 kg/m³

Scope boundary. This tool is a general-purpose density solver (ρ / m / V) with a material table and mixture mode. It does not do sphere-packing geometry — for sphere volume plus crystal packing fractions (SC, BCC, FCC), see the sphere density calculator. For pure density unit conversion (kg/m³ ↔ g/cm³ ↔ lb/ft³), see the density unit converter.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for density?

Density is mass divided by volume: ρ = m / V. With mass in kilograms and volume in cubic meters, the result is in kg/m³.

How do I calculate density from volume and mass?

Convert mass to kilograms and volume to cubic meters, then divide: ρ = m / V. Example: 2 kg in 1 L gives ρ = 2 / 0.001 = 2000 kg/m³, with specific gravity 2.0000.

How do I find mass from density and volume?

Rearrange the formula to m = ρ × V. Example: steel (ρ = 7850 kg/m³) filling 0.5 L gives m = 7850 × 0.0005 = 3.9250 kg.

What is specific gravity (SG)?

Specific gravity is the ratio of a material's density to the density of water: SG = ρ / 1000 kg/m³. Water has SG = 1 by definition; anything with SG above 1 sinks in water.

Why must I convert units before dividing mass by volume?

Because ρ = m / V only works with consistent units: 1 L = 0.001 m³, so 2 kg / 1 L = 2000 kg/m³, not 2. This calculator converts every unit pair automatically, so you can mix kg, lb, L, gal, and ft³ freely.

What is the difference between this tool and the sphere density calculator?

This is a general ρ / m / V solver with a 30-material density table and a two-material mixture mode. The sphere density calculator focuses on sphere geometry (volume from radius or diameter) and crystal packing fractions such as SC, BCC, and FCC. Use this tool for everyday density problems.

How do I get volume from box, cylinder, or sphere dimensions?

Box: V = length × width × height. Cylinder: V = π × r² × h. Sphere: V = 4/3 × π × r³. The Volume-from-shape tab computes these in any length unit and can send the result straight into the solver.

How do I calculate the density of a mixture of two materials?

It depends on the mixing basis. By volume: ρ = f1×ρ1 + f2×ρ2. By mass: ρ = 1 / (w1/ρ1 + w2/ρ2). Example: a 50/50 steel-aluminum mix is 5275 kg/m³ by volume but 4018 kg/m³ by mass. The Mixture tab computes both.

Is density the same as weight?

No. Density is mass per unit volume (kg/m³), a property of the material. Weight is a force: mass times gravity, measured in newtons. A kilogram of steel and a kilogram of feathers share the same mass and weight but have very different densities.

What is the density of water?

1000 kg/m³ at 4 °C (1 g/cm³, 1 kg/L). It is the reference for specific gravity, so water has SG = 1 exactly.

Which units does the calculator support?

Mass: kg, g, lb, oz, and metric ton. Volume: m³, L, cm³, US gallon, and ft³. Density results are shown in kg/m³, g/cm³, kg/L, lb/ft³, and oz/in³.

What does "ton" mean in the mass units?

A metric ton (tonne): 1 t = 1000 kg exactly. For a US short ton (907.18474 kg), convert to kilograms first and enter that value.

Can I use this for cooking or shipping estimates?

Yes. Cooks convert cups of flour to grams using density; shippers check density against volumetric weight limits. Pick the closest material from the table or type a custom density.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. This calculator runs 100% in your browser with zero network requests — your numbers never leave your device.
