URL Encoder Guide: How URL Encoding & Percent-Encoding Works
URL encoder encode (also called percent-encoding) converts characters into a format safe for transmission in URLs. This encode URL online process is defined by RFC 3986 and is required when including special characters in query strings, form submissions, or API endpoints via the URL parameter encoder or online query string encoder.
Common URL Encode Converter Character Table
| Character | URL Encoder Encode Output | When to Encode (online urlencoder) |
|---|---|---|
| Space | %20 | Always - most common case for URL parameter encoder |
| & | %26 | In query string values (not separators) |
| = | %3D | In query string values (not key-value separator) |
| + | %2B | To distinguish from space in form encoding |
| # | %23 | In parameters (not fragment identifier) |
| % | %25 | To encode a literal percent sign |
| / | %2F | In parameter values (not path separator) |
| ? | %3F | In values (not query string start) |
| @ | %40 | In query string values (email addresses) |
encodeURIComponent vs encodeURI: Which URL Encoder to Use
This online URL encoder supports both functions used in the urlencoder encode process:
- encodeURIComponent (recommended for URL parameter encoder): Encodes ALL special characters including
/,?,#,&,=. Use this for encoding individual query parameter values. - encodeURI (full URL encoder): Encodes unsafe characters but preserves
:,/,?,#,&,=as they have structural meaning in URLs. Use this to encode a complete URL while preserving its structure.
