Unslugify Text

Turn URL slugs back into readable text — replace hyphens and underscores with spaces, strip date prefixes and trailing numeric IDs, pick your letter casing, or paste a full URL and let the tool extract the slug first. Free, instant, and 100% client-side: your text never leaves your browser.

How the unslugify tool works

  1. Enter a slug or URL. Paste a bare slug like best-laptops-2026-48291 or a full URL — with Extract slug from full URL on, the last path segment is detected automatically and query strings, fragments, and percent-encoding are handled for you.
  2. Let it clean the slug. Strip date prefix removes leading dates (2026-10-09-, 20240315_); Strip trailing numeric ID drops long numeric tails (-48291) while keeping 4-digit years like 2026.
  3. Pick a casing. Title Case is the default for headlines; Sentence case, lowercase, and UPPERCASE are one click away. The result updates live as you type.
  4. Copy or export. Copy a single result, or switch to Bulk mode to convert a whole list of slugs at once and download it as a .txt file.

Frequently asked questions

Unslugify is the reverse of slugifying: it converts a URL slug like "best-laptops-2026" back into readable text like "Best Laptops 2026". The tool replaces hyphens and underscores with spaces, strips optional date prefixes and trailing numeric IDs, and applies your chosen letter casing.
Common cases: recovering a headline from a URL when migrating content, turning WordPress slugs in a spreadsheet export back into product or post titles, reading log files full of URLs, cleaning up filenames derived from slugs, and quickly grasping what a pasted link is about without opening it.
They are opposite directions of the same idea. The URL Slug Generator turns text into a slug (text → slug), for example "Best Laptops 2026!" becomes "best-laptops-2026". This tool does the reverse (slug → text): "best-laptops-2026" becomes "Best Laptops 2026". If you need the forward direction, use our URL Slug Generator.
No — slugification is a lossy, one-way transformation, so the original capitalization is gone forever. "iphone-15-pro-max" becomes "Iphone 15 Pro Max" with Title Case, not "iPhone 15 Pro Max". Treat the output as a best-guess readable version, and manually fix brand names or acronyms (iPhone, eBay, USB) afterward.
Enable "Strip date prefix" to remove leading dates like "2026-10-09-" or "20240315_" before conversion, and "Strip trailing ID" to drop long numeric tails like the "-48291" in "best-laptops-2026-48291". A 4-digit year such as "2026" is always kept, because IDs are defined as 5 or more digits.
Yes. Paste a full URL and the tool extracts the last path segment automatically, ignoring the protocol, domain, query string, and fragment. For example, "https://example.com/blog/2024-03-15/how-to-brew-pour-over-coffee?utm=x" becomes "How To Brew Pour Over Coffee". Percent-encoded characters like "%20" are decoded too.
No. The entire conversion runs in JavaScript inside your browser — no fetch requests, no analytics payloads, no server round-trips. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
