How the math works (methodology)
Each category supports the input mode that matches how the cost behaves: hotels per night, food per day per person, flights and insurance per person, local transport per day, and flat totals where that fits. Per-person figures multiply by your traveler count; per-day and per-night figures multiply by days or nights. Destination subtotals add up to a trip subtotal, the optional 10% emergency buffer is applied on top, and the grand total is auto-split into per-day, per-person and per-day-per-person views.
| Category | Input | Budgeted |
|---|---|---|
| Hotels | $150/night × 7 nights | $1,050 |
| Food & drink | $60/day/person × 2 × 7 | $840 |
| Flights | $400/person × 2 | $800 |
| Subtotal | $2,690 | |
| Emergency buffer 10% | $269 | |
| Trip total | $2,959 | |
| Per day ($2,959 ÷ 7) | $422.71 | |
Budgeting tips this planner is built around
- Estimate by category, not by gut feel. Most blown travel budgets come from one forgotten line — usually local transport, activities or shopping. The 7 fixed categories exist so nothing hides.
- Price the big three first. Flights, hotels and food typically decide the trip. Get rough numbers from booking sites, then let the planner do the per-day and per-person splits.
- Keep the buffer until bookings lock. A 10% contingency absorbs fare differences, baggage fees and the tour you could not resist. Reduce it only when quotes are confirmed.
- Compare destinations honestly. A cheap flight to an expensive city often costs more than a pricier flight to a cheap one. Multi-destination mode makes that trade-off visible per day.
- Track as you go. Open the tracker on your phone during the trip; catching an over-budget category on day 3 beats discovering it on day 7.
