Tent Size Calculator

How big of a tent do I need? This free tent size calculator answers it for both jobs on one page. The event tab is an event tent size calculator and party tent size calculator for weddings, receptions, and backyard parties: enter guests, pick a seating style, add extras, and get square footage plus the standard tent dimensions that fit. The camping tab is a camping tent sizer: enter sleepers, gear level, dogs, and sleeping pad width to get required floor area, the right tent rating, peak height, vestibule, and packed-weight guidance.

Scope boundary. This tool sizes rectangular event tents (pole, frame, and high-peak) and dome/cabin camping tents. It does not size yurts — see our yurt size calculator — and it does not estimate stove fuel: for that, use the camp stove fuel calculator.

How tent sizing works

Event tents

Multiply guests by the square footage per person for your seating style, add fixed areas for extras (dance floor, bars, buffet lines, DJ, band, cake table), then add a comfort buffer of 10 to 20 percent. The sizer then picks the smallest standard tent at or above that total from the rental catalog, and names the next size up as the roomy alternative. Sidewall is ordered by tent perimeter; eave height is 7 ft for tents under 40 ft wide and 8 ft for wider tents.

Camping tents

Multiply sleepers by the floor area your gear level needs, add 15 sq ft per dog, and pick the smallest tent rating at or above that total. The sizer also checks that your sleeping pads fit the tent width side by side, recommends vestibule space at 5 sq ft per person, and gives a packed-weight target for backpacking trip styles.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet do I need for a 150-guest wedding tent?

For 150 guests with banquet seating at round tables, plan 12 square feet per guest, which is 1,800 square feet for dining. A dance floor for about 40 percent of guests adds 240 square feet (60 dancers at 4 square feet each), plus 100 for a bar, 125 for one buffet line, and 100 for a DJ, for 565 square feet of extras. That is 2,365 square feet before buffer; add a 10 percent comfort buffer and you need 2,601.5 square feet. This wedding tent size calculator recommends a 40 x 80 ft tent (3,200 square feet) as the best fit, with a 40 x 100 ft tent as the roomy alternative. The 40 x 80 ft tent seats up to 266 guests banquet-style if your list grows.

What tent size for 100 guests works for a cocktail reception?

A cocktail reception with some seating needs about 8 square feet per guest, so 100 guests need 800 square feet. With a 10 percent buffer that is 880 square feet. This cocktail reception tent size points to a 30 x 30 ft tent (900 square feet) as the best fit, or a 30 x 40 ft tent (1,200 square feet) if you want lounge furniture and extra circulation space.

How much space should I plan for a dance floor?

Use this simple dance floor size calculator rule: plan 4 square feet per dancer and assume about 40 percent of guests will dance at once. For 100 guests that is 40 dancers, or 160 square feet of dance floor, roughly a 12 x 14 ft area. The event tent sizer above adds this automatically when you tick the dance floor option, along with space for bars, buffet lines, a DJ, or a band.

Pole tent vs frame tent: which should I choose?

Both use the same square footage math. A pole tent has center poles and a tensioned fabric roof: it looks classic, costs less, but needs grass for staking and the poles sit inside your floor plan. A frame tent has an aluminum frame with no center poles, so the interior is fully open and it can stand on concrete or a deck. High peak tent sizes follow the same catalog, from 20 x 20 ft up to 40 x 100 ft, with dramatic peaks. Choose pole for lawns and budget, frame for patios and clear sight lines.

How much tent space per person for a seated dinner?

For banquet tent seating at round tables, use 12 square feet per person; for 8-ft oblong tables, 10 square feet per person. For 80 guests at round tables that is 960 square feet, or 1,056 with a 10 percent buffer, which fits a 30 x 40 ft tent (1,200 square feet), with a 30 x 45 ft tent as the roomier option.

What size tent do I need for camping with 2 people?

It depends on gear. With a standard kit the calculator asks for 20 square feet per person, so a tent size for 2 people is 40 square feet, and the pick is a 3-person tent (42.5 square feet, 45 in peak). Typical 2 person tent dimensions are about 52 x 86 in (31 square feet), which suits an ultralight pair at 30 square feet total with a 42 in peak. When in doubt, size up one rating: a tent rated for 2 assumes a close fit.

What tent size for 4 people is comfortable for car camping?

For 4 people with standard gear, 80 square feet points to a 6-person tent (85 square feet, 72 in peak). For roomy car camping with a dog, 4 people need 127 square feet (4 at 28 plus 15 for the dog), which lands on a 10-person tent (150 square feet, 80 in peak). Typical 4 person tent dimensions are about 84 x 96 in (56 square feet): fine for 4 minimal sleepers, tight for 4 with full gear.

How wide should a tent be for my sleeping pads?

Add up sleeping pad width: two 25 in wide pads need 50 in of tent width. The recommended 3-person tent is 68 in wide, so the pads fit with 18 in to spare, while a 2-person tent at 52 in would leave only 2 in. Six people on regular 20 in pads need 120 in of width, but the recommended 8-person tent is only 108 in wide, so pads overlap: size up or split into two tents. Standard pads are 20 in, wide pads 25 in, double pads 30 in.

How much vestibule space should a tent have?

Plan about 5 square feet of tent vestibule size per person: 10 square feet for 2 people, 20 for 4. A vestibule keeps boots and packs dry outside the sleeping area, which matters most on backpacking trips where interior space is tight.

How heavy should a backpacking tent be?

A common lightweight backpacking tent weight target is 1.5 lb per person for ultralight, 2.5 lb for lightweight, or 4.0 lb for standard trips. A 2-person ultralight setup should pack at 3 lb or less; the same pair on a standard trip can carry up to 8 lb. Car camping has no weight limit, so pick by space and peak height instead.

How much headroom do event tents and camping tents have?

Event tents use a 7 ft eave for tents under 40 ft wide and an 8 ft eave for 40 ft and wider: a 30 x 30 ft tent gets 7 ft legs, a 40 x 80 ft tent gets 8 ft legs. Camping tent peak height runs about 42 in for a 2-person tent up to 80 in for a 10-person tent; you need roughly 40 in to sit up. See the tent peak height chart in the camping tent size chart above.

Do I need sidewalls, and how many feet should I order?

Sidewalls are optional. Order tent sidewall rental by the tent perimeter: a 30 x 45 ft tent needs 150 linear feet of sidewall (2 times 30 plus 45). Enclose the side facing the wind or sun and leave the rest open, or close all four sides with a heater for cold evenings.
