Frequently asked questions
How do I subtract years from a date?
Enter a start date and the number of years to subtract, then press Calculate. The tool subtracts whole calendar years while keeping the month and day-of-month, so March 15, 2026 minus 3 years is March 15, 2023. You can also subtract years from today's date with the "Use today" button.
What happens when I subtract a year from February 29?
If the target year is not a leap year, February 29 clamps to February 28: February 29, 2024 minus 1 year is February 28, 2023. This matches Excel's EDATE behavior, which returns the last day of the target month when the day does not exist. Subtracting 4 years keeps February 29, 2020 because 2020 is a leap year.
Is subtracting years the same as subtracting 365 days per year?
No. Subtracting 365 x n days drifts across leap years and usually lands on a different month and day. Subtracting calendar years preserves the month and day (except the February 29 rule above), which is what age calculations, anniversary backdating, and contract lookups expect.
What is the Excel formula to subtract years from a date?
Use =EDATE(A1,-12*n) to subtract n years from the date in cell A1, or =DATE(YEAR(A1)-n,MONTH(A1),DAY(A1)) for the manual form. EDATE automatically clamps February 29 to February 28 in non-leap target years, exactly like this calculator.
What date was 10 years ago?
Subtract 10 whole calendar years from the date: 10 years before October 9, 2026 is October 9, 2016. The quick table below shows 1 through 10 years ago from any start date you enter, including the weekday.
Can I subtract years from today's date?
Yes. Click "Use today" to fill in the current date, enter the years, and calculate. Common uses: finding what date was 5 years ago for records lookup, checking a 10-years-ago anniversary, or backdating a start date for eligibility rules.
