How to use this stopwatch
- Start / Pause: press the Start button (or Space). Pause freezes the exact elapsed time; pressing Start again resumes from there.
- Lap: press L while running to record the current split. Each row shows the lap split and the total elapsed time at that moment.
- Reset: press R to stop and zero everything, including laps.
- Export: copy your laps as plain text or CSV to paste into a spreadsheet.
- The display shows MM:SS.cs (centiseconds) and switches to HH:MM:SS automatically for runs over one hour. Tick “Show milliseconds” for MM:SS.mmm resolution.
Why this stopwatch is accurate
Elapsed time is recomputed from Date.now() timestamps on every screen refresh — the classic anti-drift technique. The timer never counts ticks, so background-tab throttling cannot make it lose or gain time. Your laps and paused time are saved in your browser whenever you pause or record a lap, so reloading the page restores your session.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is this online stopwatch?
Yes. Elapsed time is recomputed from Date.now() timestamps on every screen refresh instead of counting ticks, so the display can never drift the way tick-based timers do. The big display shows centiseconds (hundredths of a second); an optional toggle switches it to full milliseconds. The screen itself refreshes about 60 times per second, so the very last digit may occasionally skip — the underlying timing stays exact.
What keyboard shortcuts does the stopwatch have?
Space starts or pauses the timer, L records a lap, and R resets everything. The shortcuts are ignored while you are typing in a text field, so they never interfere with other input. Every shortcut has a matching on-screen button if you prefer the mouse.
Does the stopwatch keep running if I switch browser tabs?
Yes. Because elapsed time is always recomputed from timestamps, the timer keeps counting correctly while the tab is in the background, the window is minimized, or the browser throttles background tabs. While it runs, the live time also appears in the browser tab title.
Are my lap times saved anywhere?
Your elapsed time and laps are saved in this browser automatically whenever you pause or record a lap, so reloading the page restores your session (paused). Nothing is ever uploaded to a server — everything stays on your device, and no account or signup is needed.
Can I display milliseconds instead of centiseconds?
Yes. Turn on the milliseconds toggle above the display to switch from centiseconds (MM:SS.cs) to full millisecond resolution (MM:SS.mmm). For runs of one hour or more the display switches to HH:MM:SS automatically.
How do I delete a single lap?
Each lap row has a small × button that deletes just that lap. Lap totals are stored as absolute timestamps, so deleting a lap never changes the total times of the other laps — only the split of the lap right after it is recalculated. The “Clear laps” button removes every lap while leaving the running timer untouched.
What is the difference between a stopwatch, a countdown timer, and a Pomodoro timer?
A stopwatch counts elapsed time up from zero and is the right tool for timing races, workouts, experiments, and anything where you need lap or split times — that is what this page does, including fastest/slowest lap highlighting and CSV export. A countdown timer counts down to zero from a target you set, which is what our countdown timer does. A Pomodoro timer automates repeating focus and break cycles, which is what our Pomodoro timer does. Pick the tool that matches the direction of your time.
