Sod Installation Cost Calculator
How much does sod installation cost? Not the price of the grass — the full installed project: materials, labor, site prep, delivery, and the slope, access, and region factors that move real quotes. Set your lawn size and grass type below for an instant line-item breakdown, plus a DIY vs pro comparison.
A 2,000 sq ft Bermuda lawn runs about $4,636 professionally installed on prepped soil ($2.15/sq ft) — and the same lawn can cost thousands more once removal, grading, and difficult access enter the picture. The calculator prices every one of those variables; the guide below explains what each line means and what 2026 installers actually charge.

Pro vs DIY
How this sod installation cost estimate is calculated
A sod installation quote is not the price of the grass. The grass itself is only about a quarter of a typical pro-installed project. The full installed price is:
Total = sod material + installation labor + site prep + delivery (+ equipment rental if DIY, + first-year watering and care if you count it).
Start with the billable area: your lawn area plus a cutting-waste allowance (default 8%, the middle of the 5–10% pros order). A 2,000 sq ft lawn becomes 2160 sq ft of sod to buy. Everything below scales from that billable figure.
Sod material is billable area times the per-sq-ft price of the grass type (Bermuda $0.55/sq ft in the example: $1,188). Installation labor defaults to the typical installed price for that grass minus the material cost (Bermuda: $2.10 installed − $0.55 material = $1.55/sq ft labor, or $3,348 on this lawn). If you already have a quote, overwrite the labor rate and the math follows it.
Site prep is the line that separates a $4,636 job from a $6,969 job on the same 2,000 sq ft lawn: removal, grading, tilling, and starter fertilizer add $2,333 before a single roll is laid. Difficulty multipliers (slope, access, region) apply to labor and prep only, never to the supplier-priced sod. Delivery is a flat fee, and first-year watering and care is an optional rough estimate of $0.25/sq ft.
Installed sod cost by grass type (2026)
Installed price per square foot already includes typical labor at national-average rates, plus the $100 delivery on a 2,000 sq ft project with 8% waste. The last column is the published 2026 band (Angi) for the same grass — the calculator sits inside every one of them.
| Grass type | Material | Labor | Installed /sq ft | 2,000 sq ft project | Published 2026 band |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bermuda | $0.55 | $1.55 | $2.15 | $4,636 | $1.35–$2.85 |
| Zoysia | $0.70 | $1.75 | $2.50 | $5,392 | $1.40–$2.85 |
| St. Augustine | $0.60 | $1.55 | $2.20 | $4,744 | $1.35–$2.75 |
| Fescue | $0.55 | $1.45 | $2.05 | $4,420 | $1.35–$2.65 |
| Kentucky Bluegrass | $0.50 | $1.35 | $1.90 | $4,096 | $1.35–$2.40 |
| Bahia | $0.40 | $1.40 | $1.85 | $3,988 | $1.20–$2.40 |
| Centipede | $0.55 | $1.75 | $2.35 | $5,068 | $1.75–$2.85 |
| Ryegrass | $0.45 | $1.55 | $2.05 | $4,420 | $1.35–$2.65 |
Bahia is the budget pick at $1.85/sq ft installed ($3,988 on 2,000 sq ft); Zoysia is the premium pick at $2.50/sq ft ($5,392). Pick the grass for your climate first — warm-season grasses (Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine, Bahia, Centipede) for the South, cool-season grasses (Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass, Ryegrass) for the North — then price it.
Site prep: the hidden half of the bill
Two quotes for the same lawn can differ by thousands, and site prep is almost always why. Laying sod on unprepared ground is the classic false economy: it saves money for a week and costs a re-do within a season, because roots cannot knit into compacted or weedy soil.
| Prep task | Default rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Old grass / vegetation removal | $0.50/sq ft | Sod cutter or herbicide kill + haul-away. Published band: $0.50–$2.00/sq ft. |
| Grading and leveling | $0.30/sq ft | Rough grade so water drains away from the house; finish rake. |
| Tilling / loosening soil | $0.20/sq ft | Loosens the top 3–4 in. so roots knit into the native soil. |
| 2 in. topsoil, delivered + spread | $0.55/sq ft | For thin or rocky native soil. The single biggest prep adder. |
| Soil amendment (compost/conditioner) | $0.30/sq ft | Organic matter tilled in; cheaper than full topsoil replacement. |
| Starter fertilizer | $0.08/sq ft | High-phosphorus starter applied at laying time. |
| Soil test (lab) | $75 flat | Tells you pH and nutrients before you amend blindly. DIY kits run $12–$30. |
On a 2,000 sq ft Bermuda lawn, old-grass removal alone adds $1,080. The four most common prep tasks together (removal, grading, tilling, starter fertilizer) add $2,333, taking the project from $4,636 to $6,969. When a quote looks suspiciously cheap, check which of these rows it skipped.
Worked examples
Example 1 — basic pro install, 2,000 sq ft Bermuda, soil already prepped
1. Billable area: 2,000 sq ft at the default 8% waste allowance = 2,160 sq ft.
2. Sod material: 2,160 × $0.55 = $1,188.
3. Installation labor: 2,160 × $1.55 = $3,348.
4. Delivery: $100.
5. Total: $4,636 — $2.15/sq ft,
5 pallets. This sits inside the published 2026 basic-install band of
$1.00–$2.50/sq ft ($2,000–$5,000 on this lawn).
Example 2 — full lawn replacement, same 2,000 sq ft Bermuda
Add removal, grading, tilling, and starter fertilizer:
1–3. Same material ($1,188) and labor ($3,348).
4. Site prep: 2160 sq ft × ($0.50 + $0.30 + $0.20 + $0.08) =
$2,333.
5. Total: $6,969 — $3.23/sq ft.
Inside the published full-replacement band of $1.50–$3.50/sq ft ($3,000–$7,000).
Example 3 — difficult site, full service, 2,000 sq ft Bermuda
All seven prep tasks including 2 in. of topsoil and a lab soil test, on a steep slope with very
difficult access, in the Northeast, plus first-year watering and care:
1. Prep subtotal: $4,244; labor: $3,348.
2. Difficulty multiplier: 1.25 (steep) × 1.2 (access) × 1.15 (region) = ×1.725
on labor + prep → $13,096.
3. Add material ($1,188), delivery ($100),
and first-year care ($540).
4. Total: $14,924 — $6.91/sq ft.
This is why “install sod” quotes range from $4,000 to $15,000 on the same nominal lawn:
the site, not the grass, is the variable.
DIY vs professional sod installation
Doing it yourself eliminates the labor line and replaces it with a weekend of equipment rental (sod cutter, roller, hand tools — default $550, typical range $250–$850). The trade is your time and your back: a pallet weighs 1,500–2,500 lbs, and pros lay a 2,000 sq ft lawn in about a day.
| Scenario | Pro install | DIY | You save |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2,000 sq ft Bermuda, basic | $4,636 | $1,838 | $2,798 (60.4%) |
| 1,000 sq ft St. Augustine, basic | $2,422 | $1,298 | $1,124 (46.4%) |
That matches the published pattern: DIY typically runs $0.50–$1.50/sq ft versus $1.50–$4.00/sq ft for pro work, saving roughly 40–60%. DIY makes most sense under 1,000 sq ft on flat ground with good soil. Above that — or on slopes, or with drainage problems — the pro premium buys grading expertise and usually a 30–90 day warranty against installation defects.
Pallets, rolls, and delivery
Sod is sold by the pallet, and a pallet covers about 500 sq ft. Pallet count is ceil(billable ÷ 500): the 2160 billable sq ft in Example 1 needs 5 pallets. Material per pallet runs $200 (Bahia) to $350 (Zoysia); Bermuda is $275. Installed, each pallet on that Bermuda lawn works out to about $927 of project cost. Delivery typically runs $50–$300 (default $100 here) depending on distance and pallet count; make sure the truck can reach your yard, because you will not be carrying a 2,000 lb pallet far by hand.
How to save money on sod installation
- Do the prep yourself, hire the laying. Prep is $2,333 of a $6,969 full-replacement job — renting a sod cutter for a weekend costs a few hundred, not thousands.
- Get three written quotes and compare prep line by line. A quote that is $4,636 against quotes near $6,969 is not a bargain; it is a quote that skipped the prep.
- Keep the shape simple. Every curve and diagonal raises the waste allowance; a rectangle at 5% waste instead of 10% saves over 100 sq ft of sod on a 2,000 sq ft lawn.
- Test the soil before you amend ($75). Amending blind — lime when you needed sulfur, or topsoil over decent soil — is the most common wasted spend.
- Water immediately and deeply. New sod needs about an inch of water a day for the first two weeks. Skimping here kills edges and seams, and replacement patches cost more per sq ft than the original install.
- Install in the right season. Cool-season grasses establish best in early fall; warm-season grasses in late spring. Off-peak scheduling can also mean keener quotes.
What this calculator is not
This tool prices the full installed project — materials, labor, site prep, delivery, and the difficulty factors that move real quotes. It does not count how many rolls or pallets your lawn needs: for that, use our sod calculator, which covers area-to-rolls math, pallet sizing, waste, and material-only cost (it deliberately excludes the installation labor priced here). Planning a whole yard makeover with patios, beds, and irrigation on top of the lawn? That is a multi-line-item budget — see our landscaping cost calculator. Considering seed instead of sod? Sod installation cost — frequently asked questions
How much does sod installation cost per square foot?
For a basic pro install on already-prepped ground, expect $1.00–$2.50 per sq ft in 2026. A full lawn replacement with old-grass removal and soil prep runs $1.50–$3.50 per sq ft. On a 2,000 sq ft Bermuda lawn, that works out to about $4,636 basic ($2.15/sq ft) or about $6,969 with full prep ($3.23/sq ft). Grass type, region, slope, and access move you within — or beyond — those bands.
How much does it cost to sod 1,000 square feet?
About $2,368 ($2.19/sq ft) for a pro-installed Bermuda lawn at national-average rates: 1,080 billable sq ft of sod at $0.55 material plus $1.55/sq ft labor, plus $100 delivery, in 3 pallets. In cheaper regional markets, installers quote as low as $1,500 for prepped soil; with full site prep the same lawn lands near $2,500–$3,500.
What does a full lawn replacement cost?
A full replacement — kill and remove the old lawn, grade, till, lay starter fertilizer, then sod — costs about $6,969 on a 2,000 sq ft Bermuda lawn ($3.23/sq ft), versus $4,636 for sod on soil that is already prepped. The prep alone is $2,333, which is why the cheapest quote is usually the one that skipped it.
Is it cheaper to install sod yourself?
Yes — about 40–60% cheaper, but you supply the labor and the risk. On a 2,000 sq ft Bermuda lawn, pro install is about $4,636 versus about $1,838 DIY (materials, delivery, and equipment rental), saving $2,798 (60.4%). On a 1,000 sq ft St. Augustine lawn the saving is $1,124 (46.4%). DIY suits small, flat lawns; pros earn their premium on slopes, drainage fixes, and the 30–90 day warranty.
How much is a pallet of sod installed?
A pallet covers about 500 sq ft. The sod on it costs $200 (Bahia) to $350 (Zoysia); Bermuda is $275. Installed, one pallet’s share of a basic 2,000 sq ft Bermuda project is roughly $927 — the rest is labor, delivery, and prep spread across all 5 pallets.
Which type of sod is cheapest to install?
Bahia, at about $1.85/sq ft installed ($3,988 on 2,000 sq ft). Zoysia is the priciest of the common grasses at $2.50/sq ft ($5,392). But choose for climate first: Bahia and Bermuda for warm regions, Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass ($1.90/sq ft) for cool regions — the wrong grass costs more in water and replacement than any install saving.
What site prep does new sod need?
At minimum: kill or remove old vegetation, grade for drainage, loosen the top 3–4 inches, and apply starter fertilizer. Defaults in this calculator: removal $0.50/sq ft, grading $0.30, tilling $0.20, 2 in. of topsoil $0.55, compost amendment $0.30, starter fertilizer $0.08, and a $75 lab soil test. On 2,000 sq ft of Bermuda, the four core tasks add $2,333.
How much does it cost to remove old grass before sodding?
About $0.50 per sq ft at the low end of the published $0.50–$2.00 band — roughly $1,080 on a 2,000 sq ft lawn (2,160 billable sq ft). Herbicide kill plus sod-cutter removal and haul-away is the standard approach; hand-digging small areas yourself is the cheapest option if the lawn is under a few hundred square feet.
How much does sod delivery cost?
Typically $50–$300 depending on distance and pallet count; this calculator defaults to $100. A pallet weighs 1,500–2,500 lbs, so delivery is by truck or forklift, not by hand. Some suppliers waive the fee on large orders — ask before you pay it.
How much water does new sod need, and what does the first year cost?
About an inch of water per day for the first two weeks, tapering as roots knit (usually 2–3 weeks to root, a full season to fully establish). Budget roughly $0.25/sq ft for the first year’s extra water, follow-up fertilizer, and sprinkler adjustments — about $540 on a 2,000 sq ft lawn. Water early in the morning to cut evaporation and disease.
Do I need a soil test before laying sod?
Strongly recommended if you are paying for amendments or topsoil: a $75 lab test reports pH, phosphorus, potassium, and organic matter so you buy only what the soil lacks. DIY kits ($12–$30) cover pH and N-P-K roughly. On new construction lots with scraped, compacted subsoil, testing first routinely saves more than it costs.
I just need to know how much sod to buy. Where do I go?
Use our sod calculator: it converts your lawn area into rolls and pallets, adds a waste allowance, and prices the materials only — it deliberately leaves out the installation labor and site prep that this page prices. If you are budgeting a whole yard (patio, plant beds, irrigation plus the lawn), use our landscaping cost calculator instead.
