How much does a shower cost?

Enter your setup to get the true cost of taking a shower: water plus the energy to heat it, computed from first principles (gallons × 8.33 BTU/gal/°F × temperature rise ÷ heater efficiency).

Heater efficiency (EF) values come from DOE standards and NREL data; flow-rate caps from EPA WaterSense. See method and data tables below.

Method: how the cost of taking a shower is computed

  1. Water volume: gallons = flow rate (gpm) × minutes. An 8-minute average shower at 2.0 gpm uses 16 gallons.
  2. Heat needed: BTU = gallons × 8.33 × temperature rise (°F). One BTU raises one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit, and a gallon of water weighs 8.33 lb.
  3. Heater input: input energy = BTU ÷ EF (Energy Factor). A gas tank at EF 0.60 needs 67% more input energy than the water absorbs; a heat pump at EF 2.20 needs less than half.
  4. Cost: gas input ÷ 100,000 × $/therm; electric input ÷ 3,412 × $/kWh; water gallons ÷ 1,000 × $/1,000 gal. Sum for the cost per shower.

How much water does a shower use? The EPA-cited average is ~8 minutes (about 20 gallons at 2.5 gpm). How long is the average shower in your home? Time it once — most people overestimate how short theirs is. EPA WaterSense says the average family can save ~2,900 gallons and ~370 kWh per year by switching to WaterSense labeled showerheads.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a shower cost? For a typical setup it is well under a dollar. Worked example — 8-minute shower at 2.0 gpm (16 gallons), electric tank heater at EF 0.92, water heated from 58°F to 105°F, water at $9 per 1,000 gallons and electricity at $0.17/kWh: heating needs 6,264 BTU (16 × 8.33 × 47), which is 1.996 kWh of input energy costing $0.34, plus $0.14 of water = $0.48 per shower. A 4-person household showering once a day spends about $705.54 a year. Enter your own rates above for the exact cost of taking a shower in your home.
How much does it cost to run a shower on gas vs electric?Gas is usually cheaper per shower because gas is cheaper per unit of heat. Same 8-minute, 2.0 gpm shower as above: with a gas tank heater (EF 0.60) at $1.50/therm the energy costs $0.16 and the total is $0.30 per shower, versus $0.48 on an electric tank (EF 0.92) at $0.17/kWh. For a 2-person household that is $219.44/year on gas versus $352.77/year on electric — the water portion ($0.14) is identical either way.
Shower vs bath cost — which is cheaper? The shower, by a wide margin — unless you take very long showers. A 40-gallon bath with an electric tank heater (same temperatures and rates as above) needs 15,660 BTU, i.e. 4.989 kWh costing $0.85, plus $0.36 of water = $1.21 per bath, versus $0.48 for the 8-minute shower. The break-even is 20 minutes: a 20-minute shower at 2.0 gpm uses the same 40 gallons as the bath. So: does a bath use more water than a shower? Almost always, yes.
How much water does a shower use?Gallons = flow rate × minutes. The EPA-cited average shower is about 8 minutes, which is ~20 gallons with a standard 2.5 gpm head and 16 gallons with a WaterSense 2.0 gpm head. Federal law (Energy Policy Act of 1992) caps new showerheads at 2.5 gpm; WaterSense labeled models use no more than 2.0 gpm — a 20% cut with equal performance.
How much can a low-flow showerhead save?Swapping a 2.5 gpm head for a 2.0 gpm WaterSense head saves 4 gallons per 8-minute shower. For a 4-person household showering daily that is 5,840 gallons a year — about $176.38/year at $9/1,000 gal water and $0.17/kWh electric (EF 0.92). EPA WaterSense's own figure: the average family saves roughly 2,900 gallons of water and 370 kWh of electricity per year, because real households shower less than the 4×daily maximum.
Does a heat pump water heater change the cost per shower?Dramatically. A heat pump (hybrid) heater at EF 2.20 turns the same 8-minute, 2.0 gpm shower into 0.835 kWh of input energy costing $0.14, for a total of $0.29 per shower — about 40% cheaper than the $0.48 electric-tank result. NREL rates heat-pump water heaters at EF 2.0–2.5 versus ~0.9 for a conventional electric tank, so the savings apply to every hot-water use, not just showers.
What is the average shower cost per month?Take the per-shower cost and multiply by showers per day, people, and 30.4 days. Example: a 2-person household on an electric tank at the rates above ($0.48/shower) spends $352.77 a year, i.e. $29.40 per month. On gas ($0.30/shower) the same household pays $219.44 a year, i.e. $18.29 per month. Shortening each shower by 2 minutes cuts roughly a quarter off both.
How much does a shower remodel cost?Contractor-survey anchors (HomeAdvisor 2025, Angi): a premade shower kit averages $1,000 installed (from $500 material-only); a new shower stall runs $700–$1,600; a walk-in tile shower averages $14,300 for a new installation (Angi: $8,204 average, $4,448–$12,372 typical); a glass shower door averages $950 installed ($600–$1,350); fixtures run $50–$900. Use the Remodel estimator tab above to build your own low/average/high range.
How much does a tub to shower conversion cost?HomeAdvisor's 2025 data: about $3,000 on average, typically $1,500–$8,000. Worked example with the estimator — conversion base ($3,000 avg) + frameless glass upgrade (midpoint $1,200) + moving the plumbing (midpoint $2,050) + 10% contingency = $6,875 average, with a $2,970–$14,630 range. Keeping the drain and plumbing in place is the single biggest saver: moving plumbing alone adds $600–$3,500.
How much does a walk in shower cost? For a brand-new walk-in tile shower, HomeAdvisor reports an average of $14,300 installed. Converting an existing tub space to a walk-in is cheaper — $1,500–$8,000 — and Angi's broader survey puts new-shower installation at $8,204 on average ($4,448–$12,372 typical). Tile, frameless glass, and relocated plumbing push you toward the high end; a premade pan and keeping the layout pulls you toward the low end.
Is this a baby shower cost calculator? No. This page covers the cost of taking a shower (water + energy) and the cost of building or remodeling one. Baby shower party costs — venue, food, decorations — are a different topic entirely and are not covered here.
