1 · Your vehicle & fuel

Pick a preset (real-world economy figures) or dial in your own numbers. EV mode switches the math to kWh per mile and charging rates.

2 · Route — multi-stop legs

Add one leg per segment (city to city). Distance units follow the toggle above (miles). Tolls are per leg; check toll authority sites along your route for the real numbers.

LegDistance (mi)Tolls

3 · Hotels, food & other costs

The costs most calculators forget — hotels are usually the biggest line item on a multi-day road trip.

4 · Driving-day & fuel-stop planner

Turn miles into days, and tank size into a refuel plan.

💡 Use a realistic average speed — not the speed limit. Stops, traffic and construction usually land it at 50–65 mph on interstates.

5 · Drive vs fly

Should you even drive? Compare your total driving cost against flying the whole party and renting at the destination.

How the road trip cost formula works

Every road trip cost calculator uses the same core math; what differs is how many cost categories it remembers. This one itemizes all of them:

Typical fuel economy by vehicle (real-world)

VehicleEconomy1,000 mi at $3.50/gal
Compact / midsize sedan30 mpg$116.67
Hybrid sedan48 mpg$72.92
SUV / crossover24 mpg$145.83
Pickup truck17 mpg$205.88
Diesel pickup (at $4.00/gal)21 mpg$190.48
EV sedan (0.28 kWh/mi)—$42.00 home / $112.00 Supercharger
EV SUV (0.34 kWh/mi)—$51.00 home / $136.00 Supercharger

Verify a row yourself: 1,000 ÷ 24 × 3.50 = 145.833… → $145.83. EV sedan: 1,000 × 0.28 = 280 kWh; × $0.15 = $42.00; × $0.40 = $112.00.

Worked example: 1,000-mile trip, 2 people

Sedan at 30 mpg, $3.50/gal, $25 tolls, 3 hotel nights at $110 (+12% tax = $369.60), 3 days of food at $40/person ($240), $15 parking, $50 activities:

Fuel $116.67 + tolls $25.00 + hotels $369.60 + food $240.00 + parking $15.00 + activities $50.00 = $816.27 total, $408.13 per person. Press “Load example” above to see this exact scenario calculated live.

Drive vs fly: when does flying win?

Driving costs scale with distance; flying costs scale with people. On a classic cross-country road trip — New York to Los Angeles is about 2,800 miles — a 30-mpg car at $3.50/gal spends roughly $326.67 on fuel (2,800 ÷ 30 × 3.50), before hotels and food. One car carrying four people splits fuel, tolls and hotels four ways — driving almost always wins for groups. Solo travelers on routes over ~800 miles often save by flying, especially once you price the destination rental car. The comparison above makes it explicit instead of a gut feeling.

Metric & international notes

Switch to km / L/100km for Canada, the UK (use “petrol” prices per litre), Europe, Australia and everywhere else metric. Enter all prices in your own currency and pick it from the currency selector — the tool formats with it but never converts (no exchange-rate fetching, fully offline).

Honest scope

This calculator cannot know live gas prices, real-time toll rates or your exact route — it computes deterministically from the numbers you enter. Treat the result as a budgeting estimate (aim: within 10–15% of reality), not a quote. Check toll authority sites for your corridor and use your car’s real-world economy, not the brochure figure.
